What would you choose for a .308 Rifle that would see the folowing use :

1. Ranch
2. Trunk
3. ATV
4. Hogs
5. Rang/Plinking

I only listed .308 semi auto carbines that are available with a 16" bbl, folding stock & hi cap mags. Reliabilty & Maintainance over MOA.

my brother has a dsa fal and its an awesome rifle, you wont be disappointed with the fal (but i like my squad/scout m1a better).

I voted for the FAL, just because it is a bit (or more than a bit) more accurate than the sagia... And not that much les reliable.

I have a standard Saiga .308, and like the idea of the PTR91, but still voted for the FAL. Too many people are happy with 'em to ignore it. Probably more accurate than the saiga, and presumably less cumbersome (depending on options) than the PTR.

But, that's just my opinion.

I've had a PTR and sold it about four months latter. It was ok for a range only gun.Had some issues.Current owner likes it tho'.

Can't argue with the reliability and easy maintenance of the Siaga.See two at the local range quite often, owners like 'em.Nice to shoot.Do not like the magazines.

DSA...I have two and have used MANY FALs.
One of mine is freakin' awesome!Tactical Carbine,16" fluted medium contour with Yankee hill brake, standard stock, short gas system, short forend and super duty scope mount...1/2" 5 shot groups at 100 yrds are rutine. The other is a Para Elite...quad rail does NOT match up with superduty scope mount,Hampton lower's A2 type sight does NOT work with the FAL front sight as DSA says it will...rifle hits 18" LOW @ 20yrds!!!:fire:However,my personal experience with the basic system and literaly hundreds of FAL rifles has been VERY good. The para is a fluke I'm sure.Still too pissed at DSA's QC to even talk to them about it tho'...I realy should just tell them.

I like Saigas, but I voted for FAL. Saigas are nice guns, but they're not the be all, end all in the accuracy department. They're cheap, reliable, and fairly accurate. If you can afford a FAL, go for it.

I figured there would be more Siaga votes. DSA FALs are exspensive and if someone was going to choose a rifle for hard atv/ranch carry and a lot of plinking use I was assuming that the cheaper rifle would win over.

I said "what would you choose"...Not, " what would be your only 308 rifle".

I prefer the FAL as well but for a Rifle that was going to see a harsh life......

If cost is not an issue the FAL has such strong following ofr a reason. That said a Saiga will do every thing on your list just fine. One thing that makes the .308 saiga less of a bragain than it seems is the high price of magazines. If you buy 10-20 mags that takes a decent chunk out of the price difference.

I voted FAL based on the rifle rather than the manufacturer.

I wouldn't use a DSA as a truck gun: I'd buy a Century or a home build for less than half the price & if it didn't run well, then I'd fix it.:)

I own a fal and ptr-91. I also own a saiga-12, and in some respects the 308 and the 12 are comparable. Some personal observations after owning all of them:
Recoil: PTR and FAL both have managable recoil, but PTR has a different kind of recoil feel due to the rollerlock system. The fal's recoil is a bit more typical, and I prefer the ptr's recoil over the fal.
Trigger: FAL trigger is much better, it's lighter & crisper. PTR's trigger is only good after a trigger job. Saiga Trigger is in between, although not as crisp as the fal.
Controls: FAL controls has better ergonomics for right hand folks, especially with bolt hold open. PTR's controls are much more burdensome. As a left handed shooter, I find PTR's controls easier to use.
Cleaning: A lot of people complaining about how difficult it is to clean the PTR, but I find cleaning it only slightly more tedious than cleaning the FAL. Bolt disassembly for PTR is a bit more complex, but beyond that the time it takes between the two is negligible. Saiga can be cleaned much faster and much less frequently.
Accuracy: PTR is slightly more accurate than FAL.
Failures: I've had brass necks break off in the chamber of the PTR in the past, usually limited to certain manufacturers of ammo.

Wanta B Oddbod, good point. The FAL system is great regardless of make...NO ALUMINUM UPPERS THO'!!

Oh, I dunno - the Williams alumabomb works fine in 9x19. :)

I have a converted Saiga .308 and love it. I haven't had a chance to sit down and shoot groups to see its true accuracy but I can tell you it will hit a 20" steel plate over and over at 250 yards. Mine has been 100% reliable so far with the 500 rounds I have through it.

The Saiga .308 is a fun rifle but if money was no object then I might consider the FAL. If your on a budget then go with the Saiga all day long.

The real answer to this thread is to buy whichever rifle you can get your grubby paws on. Chances are that'll be the deciding factor in today's market.

Folding stock? You've got to run with the Saiga and an Ace sidefolder.

Right now, the cheapest DSA folder is selling for $2k.

http://www.dsarms.com/SA58-Tactical-Series/products/36/

I can get a Saiga for $500-$600 and spend no more than $300 to convert it (including an Ace sidefolder setup).

Yes, FAL mags are $12 instead of $45 for the Saiga mags. But the $1100-$1200 difference between the DSA and Saiga will buy you a metric buttload of spare FBMG mags for your Saiga....

You could get 2 Saiga's for the cost of 1 DSA FAL. But the Saiga 308 Mags are going to cost you! Of the choices the DSA FAL is a much better rifle but they are pretty heafty!

I can get a DSA FAL at $1600

A converted saiga is probably going to run around $800.

When I checked a short while ago FAL mags were $7 where I buy most of my guns stuff. Saiga mags are go from $45 up.

So a FAL with 10 mags is $1670. A saiga with 10 mags is $1250. Ad another ten for each and they are very near the same price. As an aside those FAL mags will also work with the RFB if I can every get my hands on one.

I'm a huge fan of saiga's and typically I think of them as one of the best bang for the buck weapons around. With mag fed weapons I like to have a lot of magazines because with out a mag the thing is much less useful. That is why I like to have a bunch of mags for any mag fed gun I have. Mag prices are the killer on the Saiga .308. If you can live with two or three mags then they are still a really good buy.

As per the OP,one magazine should sufice...but not for me!

If it HAS to be a DSA then the $ is a consideration to be sure.If one is willing to go with another FAL make then it becomes nearly mute.Even on GB they can be had for 700.00!!:)Mags might as well be free at that point.

Now if the Zombies are coming:eek:,well, even given the Siaga's reliability I would still go with one of the "thrifty" FALs get an intructional DVD and good manual...you should for any weapon you owne anyhow:rolleyes:.Learn it's ins and outs and IF it needs a little tlc you have the know how to do it.More aften than not even a "bad" one only needs 1-200.00 more into it to be right on.

Uhmm...I realy do like the Siaga,I just prefer the FAL.

Hey isn't the Siaga actualy based on the RPK,NOT the AK?

I like the FAL but for harsh use, I'd get a beater.
Maybe a well used lever action 30-30 or a Mosin Nagant.
Toss it in the truck, bang it around, use the hell out of it.
Oil it once a month and it will still keep running.

But if you're just spending money, get the DSA!
