I had a few questions regarding SIG P220's. I'm a newbie to SIG's, but have owned long guns & pistols for years

Questions:
A) Is it common to find Factory NIB SIG P220's with a beavertail frame grip? I found a couple, and they seemed to be priced below non-beavertail grip models?

I realize the P220 Elite has the beavertail, but this was listed as a Carry model. Can a beavertail grip be added to an existing standard frame? I couldn't find any parts for such.

B) Is the "external extractor" something new? I've seen guns listed for sale stating "comes with new external extractor..."

Thanks!

the beavertail is standard on the Elite models and there is an Elite Carry model.

the Elite models usually cost more unless it was one of the models with the .22lr upper, which is quite a bit less expensive

the external extractor is a fairly recent addition, the stainless slide model 220s had some problems with the internal extractors causing feeding problems

which model 220 are you looking at aquirring?

models with the full lenght slides are more reliable than the Compact models. i have a old stamped slide model which is utterly reliable and a couple of the older stainless 220ST models

The model is listed as;
______________________________________
Sig Sauer P220R Carry .45ACP, Nitron, Beavertail Frame, SigLite Night Sights, SAO.

The P220R SAO features a stainless steel slide machined from barstock and coated with a durable, wear-resistant Nitron® finish and a light-weight alloy frame with a beavertail. This pistol comes with external extractor, SIGLITE® night sights, Single Action Only trigger, one 8RD magazine, box, lock and manual.

No where does it say "Elite".

It doesn't mention wood grips, or the short reset trigger (SRT).

well now i'm confused

the only 220 Carry SAO models they listed are the 220R3-45-BSE-SAO which is an Elite w/wood grips and the 220R3-45-BSS-SAO which doesn't have a beavertail. but i should add that they will have alloy frames with the beavertail too. sometimes they'll just slap a slide on an available frame...i think they call it the BR

the SRT isn't applicable to the SAO models...only the DA/SA models

A beavertail, if any, is integral to the frame on these models, not a separate part like a 1911 beavertail grip safety. It is not feasible to add a BT to a non-BT frame.

I see little use for the beavertail on SIG pistols, but that is how many new ones are coming these days. Far be it from me to swim against the tide.

The full size P220 or P220R and the Carry version, with a shorter barrel are equally reliable. There have been very rare reports of the internal extractor causing failure to extract. The new exterior extractors on all new P220 models do not have this problem at all.

The older W German P220's with the stamped carbon steel slides did not and do not have extractors causing failure to extract problems. Some, including me, like the older stamped carbon steel better than the newer stainless steel slide models.

Nice, very nice.:)

I Feel Like a Dang Kid at Christmas!

This pistol comes with external extractor...

It's a Gen II P220, from what I understand? Can anyone shed more light? And for $729.00. Is it me, or did I get a fair deal? Already shipped too...

And I also just picked up my new P220 Equinox. PLUS I have 99.5% secured a used/never fired P220R, with the Special Forces Logo on it!

And the Special Forces P220

It's Christmas (in March) for me! :D

Hey Mitch

Well I see you made it to pick up the Equinox....very nice can't wait to see it! We'll have to get to the range soon, D.G. was asking when I was going next maybe we can set something up again.

I keep asking my oldest son when he's going to stop having babies (8), so I pose this question to you; are you done yet? That's quite a family of pistols you have. I also told my son it's going to be hard to feed all them kids.....I guess I could say the same to you, it's going to be hard to "feed" em all, especially with the current conditions.

Well congrats and we'll see ya soon, KO

Papa Floyd,

Yeah, I think I'm done. I feel lucky to have found the three I did. I had to buy 2 more, I just purchased that 3-gun hardcase...LOL.

I saw you found some ammo, so I'm ready. My 220 Carry Beavertail just arrived at the FFL, too!

I don't know if wood Equinox grips will fit a SAO, but they felt sliimer than the Hogue grips I installed...

PS Papa, your new SIG have as external extractor too (better than internal, I guess). I talked to SIG on a different issue today, and asked them - he said they've all been external for several years now. I forgot to inquire how to tell the difference though.

Chiselchst,

This Sig P220 Carry is a single action only [SAO] factory overrun. It is not listed in any Sig catalog or on their web site. It has a Nitron finish slide, manual safety with factory nite sites. They come standard with three 8 round factory mags. There are two variations - ones with internal extractors and one with external. I know, I have one bought last fall. It is a fantastic weapon. For those interested, Summitgunbroker has one on thier site.

Horn Smoker; Are you sure? I think SIG ONLY ships 1-mag per their PR on March 20th (except LE and Mil).

And according to the Rep at SIG I talked to today (Scott) - SIG's have had ALL had external Extractors for several years now....

Just relaying what I heard...

Sorry for any confusion. The pistol shown in LaBulldog's pic above is the 220BR3-45-BSS-SAO - the one you are asking about. The first "B" means beavertail frame. The "R" means rail. The 2nd "B" is the black nitron finish. The "SS" is the Sig Nite Sites. The "SAO" is single action only. If you bought a 220BR3-45-BSS-SAO, it is just as I said; a factory contract overrun that originally came standard with three mags - mine has an internal extractor and was bought NIB last October. It could be possible that the external extractor units only came with two mags. These pistols are not a catalog item.

I picked up a P220 from Bass Pro Shops in MI. It was $720.00 a few months back. The model I have came with 2 8rd mags. Model info from the case reads:p220R3 Carry Supreme, P220R345BTNS. It appears to be the same as the pistol pictured above, but without the stainless slide, at least it isn't stamped "Stainless". It hasn't had any problems with about a 1000rds through it, and shoot very nice.

I doubt the wood Equinox grips will fit, I bought a set of Crimson trace grips for mine, and had to return them as the ambi-safety interferes w/the grip.

HS,
OK, I now understand. I'm looking forward to geting it in my hands.

HV,
That seems like a very good price (from my CA perch). Sounds like a limited production? I'm very new to the SIGS, but have never heard of the "Supreme" Carry model... Funny it's not marked Stainless on the slide - wish I could help, but like I said I'm very new to the SIG Family. But have adopted several now, LOL.

Thanks for help and info folks!
