For those who don't like to read books, feel free to skip past the backstory to the questions :D

============ OPTIONAL BACKSTORY =================

My girlfriend has always been in love with my near-mint 1990 9mm West German P226. Although it's WAY too big for her hands (she's around 5'4, 105lbs.) she shoots it better than anyone else I've seen, including me. We're way past the phase of her calling it 'her gun', this is like full blown love. I really don't shoot it much as I prefer to put what little ammo I can afford right now through guns I actually carry, so it's mostly a range gun for her to shoot. Though she loves it, she knows it's not a good 'fit' for her, so we've been looking at a few guns for her that might fit better. We've looked at other Sig's (229, 239), Glock's, XD's, M&P's, CZ's, 1911's, and others. The only ones that seem to fit properly are the Kahr's, and with the economy the way it is there's no way we can afford even a used one. Plus, there's something about them she just doesn't like.

So, aside from this, I've been drooling over Colt Commander Lightweights and Officers (I prefer 1911's for carry, due to the width). Knowing this, and despite how much she loves it and the P220, she has insisted I sell or trade both the P220 and P226 and try to get one of each. Yes, I have an amazing girlfriend. Unfortunately, our finances are so tight there isn't really any wiggle room at all, so getting rid of those two guns are the only way I might get the Colts. She's not really in any hurry to get a gun she likes to shoot and has told me she wants me to get the Colts first. Though she doesn't shoot them as well as the P226, she has a thing for them :)

Anyway, the combination of her selflessness and a birthday coming up motivated me to work extra hard these past couple weeks and I've been able to pull in a bit of extra money. Although she insisted I don't get her anything for her birthday, that's not an option. I was considering a nice dinner or something along those lines when up popped a local Sig P6 for sale on my website for $315! Granted, that's around three times what I have to spend, I can make it happen. I PM'd him and the deal is done, I pick it up Thursday :D

=================== END BACKSTORY =======================

So I bought my girlfriend a P6. From the pictures it looks like it's in 'good' condition with some holster wear, like most of the others. There are three main reasons I chose the P6 for her:

1) It's a Sig, and she's in love with my P226.
2) I can afford it.
3) It should be thin enough to fit her hand.

I think this will be a perfect first gun for her, and this one will actually be 100% hers. Eventually I'm sure she'll bug me enough to have it refinished, but for now I need to customize it for her. Here are the things I'm considering, in no particular order:

1) Short Trigger - As I said above, she has small hands. I'm going to have to find a short trigger for this. How many options do I have here, and is one far better than the others? Is this something I can install myself?

2) Hammer & Recoil Springs - I've heard these are fairly stiff on the P6 for safety reasons and most people replace them with lighter springs. I'm thinking of going with the standard 19# hammer spring. Is there a lighter recoil spring that would assist her with racking the slide? If not, should I replace it anyway for good measure?

3) Polished Internals - I've read of a people polishing things up such as the trigger and the hammer strut to make things smoother and more reliable. Any suggestions here?

I'd also love to hear any other comments you guys might have :)

Do a google search for Gray Guns. Bruce Gray can help you fix her up. Also, you might consider getting her new grips. That will require some trial and error though. She's a lucky girl.

Good Luck,

RMD

Hi Joey Link,

Great choice in a pistol!

to get it ready for a "smaller" hand here is a site of a manufacturer of a short trigger for the P6. http://customizedcreationz.com/sigp6p225parts.html They also have an installation video on the same page. Looks very simple!

Brownells can set you up with a set of P225 springs (same size) that should give you a slightly lighter pull than the original PD heavy P6 springs.

My understanding is that Sig has slim grips for the 225/P6. Best bet is to check with them.

Good luck!

Try this:

Do Not replace the recoil spring with a lighter one.
It is a certain pound rating to work the gun and prevent it from beating itself to death.

Teach the girlfriend this method of loading:
Don't try to pull the slide back.

1. Grasp the slide with left hand, fingers on left side, thumb on right.
2. Extend left arm, and rotate the gun to left until hand & arm are straightened out and provide the strongest grip.
3. Keeping finger out of trigger-guard, grasp grip and Push forward on gun with right hand until full slide travel is reached. You use the stronger right arm to push the gun forward instead of pulling the slide back with the weaker left hand.

4. Release slide with left hand.

Since the left arm is extended & comfortable straight, you are able to use all the muscles in the left hand to grasp the slide and do nothing else.
You aren't using some of those same hand and wrest muscles to try to grasp the slide, and pull it back at the same time.

A P6 is a great choice if you like a P226. The grips are narrower, but the reach to the trigger is still the same. Check out the Sig pistol forum at:

There are probably several threads that discuss the questions you raise, so be liberal with the search function.

If you're getting her a matching accessory, (holster), a P6/P225 usually fits in a P220/P226 holster. It will not fit in a P228/P229 holster because of the large trigger guard.

A girl friend is going to want a new gun not something carried by some sweaty teutonic cop for 12 years. Most women are funny about this sort of thing.

If she likes the P6/225, but the gun is too large for her hands, it sounds like the Sig 239 would be PERFECT for her.

The 239 is a single stack "tradtional" Sig like the 225, but they made the grip size smaller. My female students generally LOVE the gun.

It's more expensive then a P6, but would probably fit her much better.

It's available in both standard DA/SA with decocker and in the DAK double action variant.

I like the 9mm version, but it's also available in .40 and .357 Sig.

P6: Recoil spring - uses same spring as 228. I put new ones in mine, started having feed problems with cheap Barnaul ammo, put the old ones back in, run fine again. Get a new one anyway, try it.

Hammer spring: P6 has a 28 lb, DA is a beast. Old style 228 fits here too, I think it may be 22 lb. Everybody at SigForum that uses the 19 lb Wolf seems happy. I would do that.

Grips: The stock ones are pretty thin. The only Sig thin grips I know of are for the 220. The P6 is way smaller than a 226, she may like it as is.

Sights: P6 comes with all black sights. I put Meprolights on one of mine, love them day or night. You can nearly read by the glow at night. $69.95 at Top Gun Supply.

Holsters: I carry mine in a Kramer IWB made for a 229R. The rail guns went back to the square front trigger gaurd; the 228 and 229 non-rail have a rounded guard front. Fits great, stays in place.

Make sure you run several mags of your carry ammo through it. Some of those older guns are finicky about some hollow-point. This is easily fixed, if need be. Search on sigforum.com FWIW, the Federal 9BP, or 9BPLE, seems to work well for a lot of folks. Good choice, great pistol. Enjoy!

I'm going to have to check out a P6! I have a Kahr for my little hands (like you mentioned) and I love it!
