============ OPTIONAL BACKSTORY =================
My girlfriend has always been in love with my near-mint 1990 9mm West German P226. Although it's WAY too big for her hands (she's around 5'4, 105lbs.) she shoots it better than anyone else I've seen, including me. We're way past the phase of her calling it 'her gun', this is like full blown love. I really don't shoot it much as I prefer to put what little ammo I can afford right now through guns I actually carry, so it's mostly a range gun for her to shoot. Though she loves it, she knows it's not a good 'fit' for her, so we've been looking at a few guns for her that might fit better. We've looked at other Sig's (229, 239), Glock's, XD's, M&P's, CZ's, 1911's, and others. The only ones that seem to fit properly are the Kahr's, and with the economy the way it is there's no way we can afford even a used one. Plus, there's something about them she just doesn't like.
So, aside from this, I've been drooling over Colt Commander Lightweights and Officers (I prefer 1911's for carry, due to the width). Knowing this, and despite how much she loves it and the P220, she has insisted I sell or trade both the P220 and P226 and try to get one of each. Yes, I have an amazing girlfriend. Unfortunately, our finances are so tight there isn't really any wiggle room at all, so getting rid of those two guns are the only way I might get the Colts. She's not really in any hurry to get a gun she likes to shoot and has told me she wants me to get the Colts first. Though she doesn't shoot them as well as the P226, she has a thing for them
Anyway, the combination of her selflessness and a birthday coming up motivated me to work extra hard these past couple weeks and I've been able to pull in a bit of extra money. Although she insisted I don't get her anything for her birthday, that's not an option. I was considering a nice dinner or something along those lines when up popped a local Sig P6 for sale on my website for $315! Granted, that's around three times what I have to spend, I can make it happen. I PM'd him and the deal is done, I pick it up Thursday
=================== END BACKSTORY =======================
So I bought my girlfriend a P6. From the pictures it looks like it's in 'good' condition with some holster wear, like most of the others. There are three main reasons I chose the P6 for her:
1) It's a Sig, and she's in love with my P226.
2) I can afford it.
3) It should be thin enough to fit her hand.
I think this will be a perfect first gun for her, and this one will actually be 100% hers. Eventually I'm sure she'll bug me enough to have it refinished, but for now I need to customize it for her. Here are the things I'm considering, in no particular order:
1) Short Trigger - As I said above, she has small hands. I'm going to have to find a short trigger for this. How many options do I have here, and is one far better than the others? Is this something I can install myself?
2) Hammer & Recoil Springs - I've heard these are fairly stiff on the P6 for safety reasons and most people replace them with lighter springs. I'm thinking of going with the standard 19# hammer spring. Is there a lighter recoil spring that would assist her with racking the slide? If not, should I replace it anyway for good measure?
3) Polished Internals - I've read of a people polishing things up such as the trigger and the hammer strut to make things smoother and more reliable. Any suggestions here?
I'd also love to hear any other comments you guys might have
