WARNING: the use of spray solvents such as Birchwood Casey Gunscrubber and PowderBlast will severly damage the grips of your P6.

Last night as I cleaned my P6 after its initial trip to the range I looked at the grips and was reminded of my European model P220 that I owned in the Eighties, which got me to thinking. The P6 grips come from a gun from the same period made from what looks to be the same material. With the 220 I used Birchwood Casey GunScrubber and the grips hazed over white and cracked and cumbled in numerous places ruining them. Recalling that I sprayed some PowderBlast on the tip of a rag and dabbed it on a very small area on the inside of a P6 grip panel. Sure enough, it began to eat away at the material leaving black residue on the rag. Eventually it hazed over white.

I can tell you that B-C GunScrubber will definitely ruin the grips. I was a bit surprised that PowderBlast would as well, but polymers in the Seventies weren't what they are now. Even with solvents marked "polymer safe" I'd at least test a small interior area, or better yet just remove the grips from the gun for cleaning.

Yeah... you need to try the "Synthetic Safe" GunScrubber

Keep in mind that Gun Scrubber, Powder blast (and for cheapskates like me, WalMart non chlorinated brake cleaner) can potentially also ruin the polyurethane finish on wood grips. Ask me how I know.

They'll also take the painted dots out of sights and safety anunciators.

Best bet when using these is to take grips, stocks and any other wood or plastic parts off. To me, the time saved with an aerosol blast out is well worth the time spent fiddling with grips.

This is good info, Storm, as I know that a lot of people have bought one or more of those P6 pistols while they were available.

I wonder if the same warning would apply to any of the later production Sig pistols that use a hard plastic grip? The blued version of the current 232 comes with hard plastic and I doubt it's the only model so equipped.
