Sig Sauer Issues

Hello,

I know there are a few Sig owners here, and I have a few questions regarding issues with mine.

Background: A week ago purchased a Sig P229R 40cal and cleaned/lubed it as per the owner’s manual specifications before taking it to the range. After putting 150rds of blazer brass through it, it started showing signs of abnormal wear. As you can see in the below pic, the anodizing has been scraped off and the aluminum on the frame rail is being gouged away. As I run my thumbnail across the wear spot on the frame, it sticks to it, which indicates that there may be a burr on the slide. Sig Sauer customer support suggested that I RMA it, which I already have.

My questions are:

• Has anyone else had issues like this with Sig products? Is this a commo occurrence?
• How is Sig’s customer service in your case? Any issues there?
• How do you think they will repair it? Will they replace the frame, or will they just smooth out the burrs and re-anodize?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Did you use oil or grease, and what brand was the product you used?

I used the grease that came with the P229, I think it's called Mil-comm.

There was a post over on Sig forum within the last couple months. Same thing happened to his new Sig P229 or P226. If I remember right Sig replaced the slide and frame or perhaps a new gun.

Sad to see more than a few newer Sigs seem to have more than their fair share of issues these days. Not what you should expect in that price range on a new Sig.

I wouldn't call it a common occurence, but it does happen sometimes. Sig has developed a bad reputation with some customers because their guns are fairly expensive and they don't always honor their own written warranty. I had a similar problem with an anodized aluminum frame on a new Sig and sent it back under warranty. They refused to repair it, and at the same time I found out that Sig frames and slides have no part number and replacements are not available from any source.

I also had a CPO 229, the slide had a curved breech face that was deforming case heads to the extent that once-fired brass could not be reloaded. Sig would not repair that one because the gun would still shoot - they make no guarantee that the guns won't destroy brass, so they don't consider that a failure.

Also have a 1911 that has been back to Sig twice, and it still chokes on every type of factory HP ammo that I've tried. Both times they sent it back to me with box labels from factory ammo. The first time there was no explanation at all, the second time they said they replaced the barrel and bushing. It looks like the exact same barrel with the same very tight chamber, and I see no difference in the way it shoots or the way it jams. If they thought there was a barrel problem, I have to wonder why they didn't replace it the first time around. This same gun was a stainless model, and it originally came with a bunch of small parts that were carbon steel in the white. Sig did replace the CS parts.

There are plenty of other people who have bought new Sigs and they are happy with them. I had four other Sigs that ran 100% with no problems at all. I'm probably just sore because I have spent so much money on this brand, and on a personal level the company treated me badly. I have a lot invested in holsters and spare mags for these, and a huge amount of time training with them. The last time I had a problem with a new gun, I insisted on speaking with one of their managers. The senior manager that I spoke to was rude and disrespectful, and he refused to admit they sold a new gun with any kind of defect.

I wish you the best of luck with your new Sig. There is no way to file a legal claim at a reasonable cost unless you live in New Hampshire and purchased the gun there.

I sell a lot of Sig's and my personal handguns are all Sig's with the exception of an LCR. Prior to opening our business I needed to send a P-250 back to Sig for FTE issues. They could not have been better and I would rate their customer service an "A". My only minor complaint was that I was not notified when it was shipped back to me and I missed the initial delivery.

One thing to keep in mind, when people have an issue with anything they tend to post about it and rant and rave, when people are happy they do not typically start threads and state such. Any mechanical device can have the tolerances be off and need adjusting, we hate when it happens to us though. The Sig gunsmiths fix the products right, if they end us smoothing the surface it will be done right and re-coated so the only way you will know is by what they write on the repair order. One thing I have learned over the years is that Sig's like to run a bit on the wet side, I use slide glide and make sure I lube the slide and the frame. My P250 has over 14k rounds through it and there is virtually no wear on the slide.
