SIG SSG 3000 at Wally World ... who knew!

A regular on another forum had posted that he was in his local Walmart, and in their gun case sat a SSG 3000 ... this is a gun that has been on my want list for quite a few years but I just couldn't justify the $3K sticker and never seeing one locally helped too ... The original ones came in with a $600 McMillan stock but this one came with a similar looking factory stock. I finally gave in this afternoon and ran down to my local Wally World and there she sat, practically hidden in the back of the case with a price tag of $1497

I asked to see it, looked it up and down and said "I'll take it" ... the reaction from the two clerks and a guy looking at a shotgun with his son were eye's popping and jaws dropping.

Unfortunately we've got 20-40MPH breeze here with 50MPH gusts so I'm not even going to try and shoot it today.

What really surprised me is they said they have had it for about 3 months ... I've been in several times and never noticed. The way it was buried in the back of the case its no wonder no one saw it, and if I hadn't seen the flash-hider I wouldn't have recognized it even if I was looking for it ... I guess you really can get just about anything at Wally World.

Once upon a time (Maybe to this day) the Texas Department of Public Safety had SSG 3000s as their precision rifles. One day a DPS SWAT guy showed up at the range with one, and proceeded to put five rounds from a cold clean bore into a dime size group at 100 yards with Federal Gold Medal.

Impressive rifles.

Watching the weather channel last night they said winds were only supposed to be in the 5-10 mph range today but back up to ridiculous tomorrow and turning nasty through the end of the week so I decided to see what scope I could borrow off something temporally ... I settled on a 20x Super Sniper I've had good results with on a 22-250 that I haven't shot for a couple years ... put a bipod on it and hope to sneak away for a bit and take an extended lunch hour ... My Stoner SR25 Match has a 1-in-11.25 twist barrel so I'm going to start with ammo I have loaded for it and see if I can do better than the test target ...

I've never seen any local shops carry one, even the stores with Barrett and NFA goodies. I'd never have expected Wally's to carry them and that's a heck of a deal. Precision bolt guns oriented for mil/leo rarely go on sale or get priced below MSRP due to their low volume. When you see an opportunity like that, you have to jump on it.

So being that today is supposed to be the only decent day this week, I took an early and slightly extended lunch to run out to the range

I'm using a Super Sniper 20x scope in GG&G tactical rings, Harris bipod, 168 Sierra HPBT Match Molly in Lake City match brass loaded on my Dillon 550B, standard primer with 39.7 grains of BL-C2

First I bore sighted it at 100 but my piece of cardboard was a little small, it took me 4 shots to get on paper and another 3 to zero and get the scope setteled in. After that I let the barrel cool about 15 minutes and shot 5 rounds ... the group measures .962" outer edge to edge, center to center is .654" ... Now to see what it will do with a cold barrel

They don't sell firearms at the local Wally's. When we leave the metro DC area and I see rifles and shotguns at Wally's its kind of weird.

Nice rifle, but curious about it being a "great" deal as Sig has the MSRP at $1499. I know finding them has been a challenge, but there are several dealer's with them in stock online with comparable prices. Regardless, very nice rifle and sure looks like it does it part. Enjoy it!!

For me just finding it made it a great deal ... I saw a couple on Gun Broker (after I'd already bought this one) for ~$100-$200 less, but by the time you add in shipping and FFL fees you are not going ot have much of a gap. The get it right now, instant gratification factor is worth something too. Not to mention getting to actually inspect the gun before you buy it.

Nice rifle though I am sorry you failed to monetarily support a smaller dealer who really needed it especially since they were better on the price.

Mine says Made in Germany on the barrel and SIG SAUER INC. Exter N.H. on the receiver, as PabloJ pointed out the test target is German also the writing on the seperate box the bolt is in is all in German and it comes with a Swiss military cleaning kit ... I'm pretty sure the stock is fiberglass and wouldnt be suprised if it was US made along with the hard case it came in but can't find anything specific in the owners manual about it.

Since it doesnt have enough evil features to be considered an assault weapon it must be a sporting rifle and it doesn't have to conform to 922r.

If there were a dealer in town that had one, even if it had been slightly more I might have felt a bit of remorse, but since that's not the case, I could care less ... I kept the money in my local community where I live, work and pay taxes ... as do the employees at Walmart.

I wonder how much of the price drop is due to weird import taxes and how much is due to labor cost reductions and/or cost cutting in manufacturing.

"Keeping the money in town" is kind of hard for the LGS when he send payment for the gun to an out of state distributor, which is common. About all that stays in town are the few dollars profit he keeps.

I'm no WW fan but it's not all that about the locals. I've talked to many across the board and they make good money which they then spend out of town for what they want - furniture, cars, clothing, etc. And they often don't shop Walmart for any of that. Point being it's a flawed comparison.

It's exciting the guns are still coming in with German paper attesting to their accuracy, seems the changeover to "American made" and "you get what you pay for" might be an interesting dodge around US content law. With cars, up to 45% can be outsourced overseas, if SIG is "assembling" in America, it might be how they can bring the price down.
