Silly myths you have had to fight with

"Only someone looking for trouble buys a gun." Robert A. Heinlein
"The M60 LMG fires so fast that there are six bullets in the barrel at the same time." Unknown instructor at Aberdeen, MD ordnance school
"The .45 is way too much gun for you, little lady. You need a .38 special." Salesman at a local gun store

Huh, why on ballistics graphs do the bullets always seem to rise? Serious inquiry, not being a smart-s.

The bore has to be slightly elevated so that the bullet doesn't fall below the point of aim by the time it hits the target.

The bullet never rises over the axis of the bore, but it needs to be pointed above the axis of the sights to get very far.

Thanks, I get it now. I started thinking about my whole aerodynamic thought process and realised I was an idiot, the pressure on all sides would be equal, unlike a plane wing which has a higher pressure underneath.

Heard at the local Ace Hardware the other day by a guy looking to get his wife a ccw:
"you don't want anything smaller than a 9mm semi. 380's, 32's, and 25's have no stopping power."
then his wife points to a pink (yes pink) revolver in 38 special; guy then says
"you need at least a 357 for a revolver, and revolvers aren't good carry guns"
The salesman, another gent, and myself were just rolling out eyes and shaking our heads.
His wife left him there and went to look at garden tools and he soon left. :D

You can buy machine guns through the mail.

Um, C&R machine guns CAN be shipped directly to your house (not sure if it can go USmail), but stamp etc still apply . (yes you have to have a C&R license for this) .

C & R stands for Curio and Relic, which is a classification of articles and firearms as specified by BATF. Some states (like MI) require that machine gun owners also be federal C&R License holders, but anyone can buy a C&R gun. Also, if you have a C&R license and purchase a C&R gun it may be shipped directly to you once the transfer is approved, rather than to a Class 3 Dealer in your state before tranfer to you.

My favorite is the idea that 7.62x51mm and .308 Winchester are two different calibers. They are the EXACT same round. Here is the sticking point. 7.62 chamber spec is technically a couple of thous longer and a few early rifles use the 7.62 CHAMBER dimensions. The actual rounds as produced from every factory in the world are the same.

Now at some point someone will bring up the fact that the SAMMI spec has a higher pressure than the milspec. That is true, but the milspec is intended to create a round that will function realibly in a gas operated weapon every time, it is not the maximum operating pressure of the round.

Fulton Armory has a ton of information on the subject. I spent a decade on a military shooting team, I had the chance to measure the dimensions of dozens of 7.62 rounds, milspec rounds always come out with better averages than commerical with the exception of expensive match ammo.

People talking to each other about 'Call of Duty 4', and how the PS90 is a sought-after weapon in the game because of its killing power and 100 round magazine.

The AR15/M16 makes bullets tumble end over end *in flight*.

CZ are "junk".

Wolf Match Target .22 is "junk".

Bill Clinton wasn't "all that bad" for gun rights.

There are really 2 recoil events when a rifle is fired. The acceleration of the bullet down the bbl apoun firing and the escaping gasses pushing the rifle rearward as the bullet exits the muzzle.
This is a myth. All rearward recoil is caused by high-pressure gas inside the cartridge case, pushing the case, the bolt and the whole gun rearwards. The bullet and escaping gas can't push the gun gun rearbards, because they are moving forward. In fact, they push the gun slightly forward, because of friction between them and the inside of the barrel.

Somebody failed high school physics.

You need to stretch your magazine springs routinely since they take a set and leaving them loaded will cause them to take a set too.

You would be surprised by the number of soldiers who tell me this. This is the number one reason so many of our m16 and m9 magazines we're issued malfunction. I can tell that it's one of their magazines when I take it apart and the spring is longer than stock and twisted and misshapen. I try to teach otherwise but it's such a widespread and ingrained myth that it's often futile.

I am suprised that no one mention this one. " to make a gun full auto all you need to do is file down the firing pin . " whenever i hear that from someone I can't help but laugh and try not ot say " say go for it see what happens."

A lack of training can be overcome by installing large quantities of cool gadgets to one's firearm and/or wearing large quantities of tactical gear.

Higher price always equals higher quality.

RustyShackelford: The semi auto pistol went "full auto" . I say how???
I have a P-08 that did just that the last time I had it out. Fired two rounds then went auto on the remaining five. The trigger sear has a nice chip out of it. I just received the replacement trigger bar and striker.

I heard a few good ones the other day:

Democrats are why we have such lenient gun laws.

Unregistered firearms are illegal. (In the state of TN)

You no longer need a tax stamp to buy a fully automatic Ak-47/M16

These were all out of the mouth of one individual.

"38 special is better than 38 super because its a ful on revolver round, its not cut down for an automatic like 32acp or 9mm"........and I thought 9mm was designed for auto loaders....huh dummy me

30-06 can do anything a 45-70 can do..........some THR member in the hunting section......my responce, lets see a 30-06 hold a 500 gr bullet.

I had a guy at the range tell me that "the AK-47 was designed so that it can use the enemy's ammunition." Don't know where he heard that.

"the AK-47 was designed so that it can use the enemy's ammunition."
Maybe not so much by design as much as the fact that when one third world mudhole fights another third world mudhole both sides are probably using AKs and SKSs.

Banks or car dealerships are giving away full auto assault rifles with the purchase of a car or savings account. And they give it to you on the spot.

Well maybe not F/A assault rifles, but one does give "gun credits". And he "advises" them to a Kel-Tec .380

See this link: Direct link

An American car dealer is giving away a free handgun with every vehicle purchased, it emerged today.

And Max Motors owner Mark Muller reveals sales have soared fourfold since he launched the scheme in Butler, Missouri.

The dealership, which has a grimacing cowboy wielding a pistol as its logo and offers $250 £126) fuel or gun credit, has sold more than 30 trucks and cars in the last three days.
