I'm looking for a single action autoloader. Something to use as a range gun. nothing collectable. obviously there is the 1911, the hi-power, and some cz-75 models and clones. are there any others I am missing?

I'm looking at/for something modern or modern production. (if they haven't made one anywhere since 1970 and/or mags and parts are scarce I'm not interested)

Those are the top three right there. You can look at clones and derivatives, but there is really no reason to unless you just stumble across a nice example. Any one of those that fit your hand best and then prove to be reliable and accurate will be the one to keep. All of them are well capable of that, so it'd just be dumb luck to get one that didn't live up to that if it seems to be in nice shape.

I have a Sig P220 S/A, just got it a few weeks back. I really like it so far! I know offers a few of their models in SAO. Not the cheapest gun around but from what I'm told worth the price.

Good luck with your search, Ken.

The Taurus PT-92, and its derivitives can also be carried cocked and locked, while also offering the option of DA with the combination safety/decocker as well.

p7 is a thought, I'll have t get my hands on one and try the trigger.

as for the striker fired guns, I really want single action only. I'm done with creepy triggers, long triggers, heavy triggers, gritty triggers, or any combination thereof. I figured that limited me to the big 3 and .22s, but wanted to see if I was missing any options.

I have a Star Firestar M43 (7+1 in 9mm) that's SA only.
It's a very well-made little pistol, heavy for its size. I have big hands, so I don't find the grip all that comfortable. I've had no problems at all with it, but since getting a BHP I no longer carry it.
Used prices are usually very reasonable.

Don't forget the eaa witness line ,great guns . The witness elit can be bought for around 499 out the door at a retail of 640. There guns go up and down in price from there. And are easy to change caliber with converstion kits.

Any of the Tokarevs on sale now are a good bet in a single stack single action pistol. The Yugo M-57 Tok bring imported by SOG even has a manual safety that works like a 1911. The 7.62x25 is a real powerhouse round. The Toks convert to 9x19 Luger with just a barrel change and bushing swap. If you want to get fancy they even have mags specially adapted for the 9mm. The going rate for Toks from the big distributors is from $209 to $250. A 9mm barrel and bushing will probably set you back another $55.

An older Beretta in .32acp like my M1935 (or a .380 M1934) make fun shooters. An older Bersa like my model 383 in .380acp is fun also (It's the S/A predecessor of their D/A line which became the Thunder).
There are a lot of hammer-fired S/A pistols to choose from besides the big 3.

+1 for giving the HK P7 a chance. This little gun is an amazing example of brilliant German engineering - very decent trigger. Very accurate with the fixed barrel, very reliable with the design simplicity, and very safe with the squeeze cocker. (And it's a hoot to shoot!)

the smith 952 is gorgeous. but the price, eeeeK! the witness elite was what I was thinking of with cz-75 clone. they look yummy. I've always wanted a BHP, and can you have too many 1911's? (yes, but 2 i not that number) I'm just looking for other options, and appreciate the suggestions. pity I can't get them all.
