The M1 Garrand is chambered for it (that should do for most "combat" situations), and many quality bolt guns take this round.
The .30-06 is effective (for me) out to 600 yards, and is very accurate.
A good variety of ammo is made for this round, and I can't think of anything that I would want to hunt that could not be taken cleanly with a .30-06.
I would say that the .30-06 is the most common centerfire rifle round in the U.S.
Any store that sells ammo should have .30-06 in stock.
