.30-06.

The M1 Garrand is chambered for it (that should do for most "combat" situations), and many quality bolt guns take this round.

The .30-06 is effective (for me) out to 600 yards, and is very accurate.

A good variety of ammo is made for this round, and I can't think of anything that I would want to hunt that could not be taken cleanly with a .30-06.

I would say that the .30-06 is the most common centerfire rifle round in the U.S.
Any store that sells ammo should have .30-06 in stock.

For "recreation, target shooting, varminting and whatever big game hunting" -- .308 Winchester.

Though currently for me, it's .338 Win Mag for the "whatever big" part.

First post here, seems like lots of nice folk, so here we go.

308 for me, ammo is readily available be it commercially or surplus, won't beat you up shooting it, if for whatever reason I couldn't acquire ammo by legal means, there's plenty of GI brass to be had to roll my own.

So far, .308, .30-06, followed by .22LR takes the cake.

Can't argue much.

Still, the original post asked "for the rest of your days ... "

Recreation, varmiting, yada would have to take a back seat to staying alive - "rest of your days." (gotta play along with the thread-starter to play these games, no? ;) )

I'd want two rifles = one in a supressed .22 & another in a .30 Whisper.

90%+ could be done with the S'd .22, although a Contender in a S'd.30W would be a so-sweet addition.

Figure a 100 yard bow shot. Way sneaky, way "not there." Very high tech wrist rocket-stuff .....

Figure if you can't kill it quietly at under 100 yards (likely way less), you don't deserve to eat.

"Deferse?" Hah! nobody should even know you're there.
