Single Shot .22's

I also vote for the Remington 514. I have one I got when I was like 10 (52 now), and it was a hand me down from my oldest brother. Damn good rifle, it slays bottle caps at 25 yards with ease. You should be able to find a good used one for around $100.

When you find a good used Remington 514 for $100.00, let me know where it is. I will run there to get it. :D

I've got an old Ithaca M49 single shot .22 that is by far the most dead on accurate gun I have. It's old and kind of beat up, I found it tucked away in a closet of my wife's parents' house where her dad had hid it away years before. It's one of the most fun guns I have ever fired.

It was the perfect gun for teaching my sons safe shooting too...

As mentioned Remington 510 or 514, in that order by my preference.

If you want to scope it, look for a Remington 580. More modern, scope bases, and a Monte Carlo stock.

I just handled one of the Steven's Favorite's last week. The LOP was about 13.5", and wasn't nearly as tiny as I thought. Plus, that falling block is super cool in a single shot.

Sigle shot .22

Hi,
I have the new release Savage/Stevens Favorite. It is set up more as a standard size rifle than its predecessor, I believe. It's deminsions appear near to that of my Marlin 39 for length of pull when placed side by side. Really a light and surprisingly accurate rifle. I am trying a Skinner style peep on the rear dovetail for grins.

Here in NJ, not to far from you there is a Rem 514 for 125.00 and it's in real good shape.

Also go to Gunbroker, select rifle, then single shot and take a look around.

I just bought a Marlin 100 for 50.00 and it's pretty accurate.

Ratshooter and somebody else suggested a Savage.

I still use my Savage .22, which my grandfather might have bought in
the 40's, both for cheap fun and to avoid using up larger rounds in other guns.

If spare parts are available for a Romanian .22 Training Rifle (5-shot magazine), are they worth buying?

Savage makes a few single shot rifles, though I doubt they are acually much (if any) more reliable than their magazine fed bretheren. Most .22 bolt actions are pretty reliable to begin with. The only real difference is usually replacing the magazine with an internal block. They have an adult sized sporter (http://www.savagearms.com/markig.htm)

They also have an adult sized peep sighted model (could also mount a scope):

I shoot my Marlin 2000L quite a bit. It's no longer made, but they show up on Gunbroker occasionally. Mine shipped with a test target with a teeny tiny group that I'll never replicate. A little on the heavy side for toting through the woods though.

Try a Browning BLR-22. It's a lever-action gun, but it will shoot with any bolt gun.

Local shop here had one last summer, it got down to $70 before it sold. I waited too long to decide, and it was gone when I went back for it. It had a broken front sight, but was fine otherwise. I snoozed and I loozed.

Thats what Numrich is for.

I wouldn't feel bad about waiting too long though. We've all done it.

I knew they had the part, I looked it up. What kept me from getting it was the distance to the shop from my normal daily travels, and the wait for the dang 4473 to clear. Just wasn't able to swing the time to go by, fill out the form, and wait for God-knows-how-long. I hate that, much rather do a FTF.

A dedicated single shot may well have fewer parts to worry about breaking or wearing out. However, most of the single shots I've had experience with (Marlin and Savage) seem to be identical in every respect other than having a feed tray rather than magazine. My 2000L for example is basically a repeater with a plug with a feed tray built in. They even sold a kit that replaced that plug with a magazine. I've had no luck finding one though.

I've also never had a malfunction in a bolt action rimfire that wasn't ammo related (dud rounds). Most of the mechanical things likely to go wrong would be identical between a single shot and magazine fed bolt gun: firing pin or extractor. Either could eventually fail on any rimfire. Magazines may eventually fail, but are easily and cheaply replaced.

Stepping up to the mid range ammo, as opposed to the ultra cheap bulk stuff seems to be worth the price if going bang every time is a top priority. For example, with any of the rimfires I own (2 bolts, 2 semi's), I usually get one or two duds out of a 100 with Remmington Golden Bullets or Federal Champion. Not a big deal for plinking but not acceptable if it means losing a friendly match or shooting at food. With Federal Automatch, Green Tags, etc., I very rarely (as in I can't remember getting one) get a dud and notice fewer fliers.

The only mechanical malfunctions I've ever had on a rimfire have been with semi-auto's. Not saying they don't happen on bolt guns, just not as likely.
