Ran across one at what seemed to be a very good price, so I brought it home on Wednesday. Replaced the stock hard polymer grips with some rubber Hogues. Took it out this afternoon and ran 100 rounds of Winchester White Box through it with absolutely no hiccups.

I'm an average pistol shot, but I was very pleased with the accuracy of this piece. Then, cleaning it up after returning home proved to be quick and easy. So, why hasn't this model been a good seller for S&W? Seems to be a very solid pistol. Looks good, fairly compact and lightweight, shoots well - seems to have the attributes that would make it popular, including a good price.

The M&P line is very nice and will probably prove to be a good move. I'm just kinda puzzled that pistols like the 908, 910 and 3913 haven't been more popular.

I have the 3913, the upscale version of the 908. I think some don't like the traditional double action. They either want DAO or, possibly, a single action. I like the tda, though it does take just a bit of getting used to in going from DA to SA. Perhaps another reason is just a trend toward polymer pistols which SW finally got right with the M&P.

Yes, the trend is definitely towards plastic and away from metal. I'm not certain yet that it's a good trend, but I also have a couple of M&Ps that I like very much. But they're a lot pricier than the 908s was, though. And my M&P in 9mm certainly doesn't shoot any better than the 908. It does have a higher capacity magazine and I'm sure that appeals to many.

Like you, the tda is a good feature to me.

The 908 is a good gun. Essentially, a 3913, but with some cost cutting. One-sided decocker, less finish work-little stuff that saves production costs without hurting quality.

I would say it's not. I like my M&P .45, but between it and my 4506, the 4506 wins hands-down all-day, everyday. Don't think the M&P would hold up to my 240 grain/1060 FPS handloads like the 4506 does.

S&W is dropping these models in favor of the M&P, as mentioned. I have a 3913LS that I like very much. It is very reliable, accurate, light and slim. The M&P compact (got one of those too:)) is shorter on each end but quite broad across the slide. It does have four more rounds and the same trigger pull for each shot, though.

I agree the trend is towards polymer .. and agree that it I am not sure that this is the best trend for everyone. I really like the single stack Smith's. My 908 is a very smooth and very accurate shooter. Dead on (bullseye) at 15 yards for me (my normal practice distance) .. but I do shoot a little low with the smaller CS9 models though. Single stacks are very comfortable for me because I have very small hands. Not sure if there are many following the polymer trend while making a single stack .. so my 908 is here to stay.

I suppose it's hard to buck the latest trend. And like I said, I own a couple of M&Ps and I know what good pistols they are. Maybe I'm just an old traditionalist who's out of touch in thinking that the 908S still has a usefull place in the S&W line-up. The only true test is the marketplace, though.

another 3913LS owner here; i love this pistol and would recommend it. I own an old model 659 that has been incredibly reliable across almost 30,000 rounds of use without a single replaced part - so far the 3913 has been just as reliable.
