What kind of grips are on yours, swissfist? When I started pistol shooting, in the 1980's, it was common to replace S&W K-frame stocks right away.
Just picked it up today, rubber pachmyrs and some unidentifiable medallion, foreign LE turn in I think. I'll post a pic.

Thanks for sharing all your thoughts and stories. Picked up the piece yesterday. Looks OK, in a little rougher shape than hoped but nothing terrible. Some rust and pitting, lockup seems tight enough. Here's some pictures, including the grip medallion, possibly the police force that used it? IMG_20170127_103026306.jpg IMG_20170127_103026306.jpg

Regardless of how a S&W Model 10 HB Revolver (or really any K-frame, for that matter) looks, you can shoot it and smile.
Understanding that the Model 10 was also in a snub, it will be interesting to compare to the new Colt Cobra with its 6 rounds.

I also have one of the 4" HB 10's. Picked it up several years ago when Bud's had a bunch of them for $300. LEO trade-ins from some South American country I think.

Mine's a great shooter and in excellent shape mechanically, but cosmetically it's your typical "beater", although not horrible. Mostly holster wear. Part of me would like it restored to a pristine finish, but my practical side is going to leave it alone - it's all honest wear and doesn't affect the operation. I need to shoot it more often.....

Rondog,. I briefly considered maybe getting it refinished, but decided I liked the character of that "seen action" look better. Just gonna take some 3in1 and get the surface rust off and call it a day.

Yeah, I like pretty guns, but some just need to be left as-is. Not to mention refinishing it would cost more than what I paid for it.....

Are those Rogers Combat Grips on your Model 10? They look a lot like the ones I have for a J frame S&W. Very comfortable and ergonomic to use.

It may not matter what oil but I have had good luck with CLP for that purpose.

I was interested in the Bull Barrel part. Couple years ago I bought an after market 4 inch barrel with heavy shroud for a Dan Wesson revolver I have. I installed the barrel and it worked just fine but I was considering taking the gun deer hunting and put the 8 inch barrel back on it. Next range trip I need to revisit the 4 inch heavy shroud barrel. I am thinking it is the same concept as the bull barrel on yours.

The barrel on mine is not shrouded.

I was talking about the extra weight the bull barrel puts at the front of the gun. I always thought the reasoning for that was to soak up recoil and reduce the muzzle flip as the heavy shroud for my Dan Wesson was advertized.

I don't think the K-frame was ever lengthened to get a longer cylinder window. I think they just shortened the rear end of the .357 barrel at the forcing cone to accommodate a longer cylinder. The .357 is only about a tenth of an inch longer than a .38 ctg.

The J-frame WAS lengthened to take .357 ammo. But they needed to beef up the gun a little. I still think it's too small for a .357. The Ruger SP-101 is the smallest .357 I own, or want.

I never owned a Model 10, but had the stainless variant, Model 64, a heavy four-inch barrel. It shot extremely well and had a fine balance for point shooting. I used Pachmayr grips on it. I traded up to a M-66-3 .357, used with the same grips. It's my single favorite handgun of all time. But I don't run many .357 rounds through it. I carry those when warranted, but shoot most .357 stuff in a Ruger GP-100. Even it doesn't get full .357 ammo a lot. That's for killing things better, not for routine range ammo.

Both the SP101 and model 60 J-frame benefit enormously from lighter reloads...faster powders and even smaller bullets, using the range between 38 +p and 357 minimum. Once having that 357 "Lite" ammo, I prefer the 10% advantage the 60 has in weight over the heavier SP101. I certainly score better with it, and the action feels better to me.

Just yesterday I bought a nice M10 with square butt and 4 inch heavy barrel. I had a M36 back in the day and it was a sweet gun but small and hard to shoot accurately. This one feels great in the the hand and I know I am going to love it.It will be a good stepping stone also for my girlfriend who I am teaching to shoot. She loves my .22 handguns but dislikes the .45

Can't beat a model 10 and with a heavy barrel. If one is lucky, one might find a 10-6 4 inch heavy barrel chambered in 357 magnum. Been looking for one for years.

If I'm not mistaken, S&W made a few M10's in 357mag before they decided to start branding them as M13's

IIRC, Model 10s were made up in 357 for NYSP. I don't know if they made any up for any other agency. I don't think they ever sold 357 Model 10s commercially.

I stole this 10-6 from my neighbor, ( gave him more than he ask, less than $200), LNIB. Said he won it in a raffle and never fired it.
