one of those guys hit a Prairie dog at 800yards
so your rifle is good enough with a bit of care to get hits at 800 metres .

so you can spend $$$$$$$$$$ on building or buying a better rifle
or a few $$$$$ on a trigger job and a better bipod and $$$$$$$$$$ on ammo and practice time
your choice if red dawn comes you can always stalk a bit nearer the bad guys :D

Riiiiiiiight. You watch a lot of movies?

For whatever reason it is that you don't want to be "identified as holding an ammunitions-firing device," it doesn't sound very above-board, and possibly outside the lines of the law.

Mods?

So not wanting to look like a man holding a weapon appears 'outside the lines of the law' to you?

No, I don't wish to appear as though I were a sore thumb should I ever need to use a precision rifle to defend my house, family, or possessions.

What about the mods?

:neener:

Maybe this has already been said, but what you really want is a precision tactical target rifle. It kind of rolls off the tongue without conjuring up images of Rambo.

If folks are gonna merely duplicate what's already been said about equipment, well, please don't. As in, if you haven't read through the first three pages, do so.

As to uses? That's not on-topic for the thread.

On that note, consider your goal: are you trying for extreme precision at long distances while stuck to a bench, or are you trying to hit a man-sized target at arbitrary range under field conditions? Both are fine goals, just know which one you're after.

Well put. About 10 years ago, I was ready to take my shooting to the next level. I was a deer hunter(slug guns only in my area), clay pigeon and pistol shooter. I decided long range shooting was something that seemed interesting. With my limited knowledge at the time, the term "benchrest" came to mind, so I thought that was the direction I was headed. After some diligent research though, I realized that was not my cup of tea at all. Shooting a $ 5,000 rail gun with a 3 oz trigger(my finger being the only thing even touching the gun), did not seem appealing at all. Nor did spending incredible amounts of time turning case necks/weighing primers/ other meticulous tasks, all in the name of shaving a hundredth or 2 off group size. I have great respect for the bechrest crowd, it was just not the hobby I was looking for. What I found is I really enjoy target shooting with a rifle I can actually use for hunting as well. Got a Rem 700P, Leupold Vari-XIII, federal GMM, lightened trigger to 3lbs. I use this rig for hunting deer, elk, coyotes, prarie dogs, etc... as well as shooting milk jugs and steel gongs out to ~900 yds with my buddies. Can I hang with the benchrest guys? Nope. But the fact I can hit a 9" gong at 800 yds about 90% of the time off a bipod makes me feel like a precision shooter, although I'm sure by many people's definition I'm a hack.

Depending on wind conditions, a 9" gong at 800 yds. 90% of the time sounds pretty respectable to me. ;)

I was wondering when you were going to get a belly full...nice response on #24...You've heard some good advice, and you've heard some rhetoric...And from the sound of some of the responses, you've heard a bunch of unqualified noise, trying to sound "authoritative"...By now, you're probably sorry you ever used the word "s n _ _ _ r"....Sounds like you have a great
"reach out and touch" rifle...If you're looking for a bolt action "s n _ _ _ r"
rifle, I'd check out the Savage line previously suggested, as well as the
Remingtons..The Savage 10 FP, I believe it is, is an awesome "long distance
shooting utinsil" on a .308 platform...Do your research, check some out, and
go for it. Be safe, be careful, and have fun...Hey the word SNIPER...there...I said it...doesn't indicate any intent or occupation,(it's descriptive...that's all..)
anymore than the term "full auto" is necessarily illegal...lighten up people.

" I realized, that none of us have a bonafide 'sniper' rifle." "what do I need?"

You need to make that deteremination for yourself. It eludes me as to how and in what circustances a "sniper rifle" would be useful to defend ones self and family. Sniping, per se, is an offensive tactic.

You might get a copy of some SWAT or SOF magazine and find a photo of some really cool dude you want to look like. Get that guys rifle, scope, bipod. Add a tactical flashlight, picatinney rail, lazer, hat, sunglasses, jacket, pants, boots, knives, under wear, maybe a gillie suit, etc. and PRESTO, you will be there!

i have only read the first two pages so i don't know if somebody has already said this, but the closest tghing one can get to a 'sniper rifle' is a remington 700, H-S(i think) stock, and other mods. this will "remake" a army M24. you can find the specs online. i redid a SPR with my ar, a M24 should'nt be much harder.

Really...?Wow...Is that how YOU did it?
And by the way...it would be better to take 'em at a distance, than CQB...So
sniping, per se, could be an offensive tactic....yes....and a defensive one as well... You use what you have...at the time...

thanks for that ninja edit Roger, saved me the trouble of responding.

I appreciate all the responses in this thread, and I have chosen my route...

Use my already kickass DPMS rifle, with a better trigger and better ammo, and maybe some other small mods, and that will suffice as my 'sniper' rifle.

Thanks for a wonderful forum to discuss this issue.

Feel free to lock this topic down moderators.
