Ordered a S&W 617 back in the second week of December. Haven't bugged them about it but how long should I expect to wait to get the gun in. I know that you cant answer that, my gun store might be able to but does anyone know how long I should be waiting to get this, are they making these? Do they wait till they get a bunch of orders in to retool to make a bunch up??

And on a second thought how long have you waited to get a gun in that you ordered new?
 
Waited days... Never more than a week and a half. I've special orderd from a local gunstore and get delivery the next day. Ordered a black powder rifle from Midway USA and it took 2 days. Ordered from Buds Gun Shop and it took a little over a week longest and 4 days shortest.

Who are you ordering from?
 
I would have cancelled the order within a week or two if they couldn't have told me when they were expecting it. I then would have shopped online (Gun Broker, GOA, Va Gun Trader) and ordered one knowing I would have it within a week. You have much more patience than I do.
 
If you haven't called the store to check the status, what makes you think they didn't receive it within a few days of ordering it?
They might be expecting you to keep tabs on your order.
 
After a three month wait for an AR I ordered through Rock River last year, I finally canceled it. All inquiries were answered by saying that barrels were on back order. I figured 3 months was the limit of my patience. Yours may be 4 months. Good luck with S&W.

I wish I was lucky enough to have the kind of money to put down on a gun and then essentially forget about it. If I order a gun, anything over a two-week wait (unless I was informed that it would be longer at the time of ordering) and I'm on the phone tracking down my property.

I did and they said they didn't know and would call me when it came in.

Because it was cold outside and I probably wouldn't go shoot it, but now that it is getting warmer I kind of want it as it will be cheaper to shoot.


When I order it I knew that these were kind of popular and hard to get. I got on-line and I think that I read somewhere that Smith only makes four of these a day. I do not know if that is true or not but also read that it may take four months to get or longer.


Anyways I just called them and the guy said that S&W allocates two of these guns to the dealers when they make them and each dealer is on a rotation. The guy that orders there stuff wasn't in and wont be till Monday so I guess I have to call back then to see if I can get any more info on when I get it.
 
I don't know about nowadays, but back around 2000 when I ordered my 686+ it was around 6 weeks. Remember it well - getting that call from the shop, going over there during lunch break, having the guy haul out the blue box and opening it up and looking at it and thinking, "Oh. My. God." It was a lot bigger than the photos looked. Held it in my hand and it's been a faithful friend ever since. You'll like the 617, I'm positive.
 
That does seem a bit long, but I guess you'll find out on Monday how much longer you'll have to wait.

As a point of reference: I sent a 1911 to Springfield for some work (nothing fancy) and had it returned in about 4 weeks. I sent the S&W Custom Shop one of my revolvers for extensive work and that took about 6 weeks.

I guess I'm just a little confused on why it's taking you so long to get your gun. I understand the rotation, but they should know when they are due to receive one. I also think they owe you the courtesy of keeping you informed on what's going on.

One thing I don't like about internet orders: you are almost completely at their mercy. A good brick-and-mortar store gives you the opportunity to stop in and see what's what.

It is a store in town here and not over the internet. Just trying to be patient and wait but yeah it has been awhile now. Nothing I can do but wait, i'm not upset about it just wanted to post and see if anyone else has waited longer to get their gun that they ordered.
 
I waited almost a month for my M&P 340. When the call finally came in, it was for a model with the Crimson Trace grips rather than the standard grips that I ordered (I put money down to make sure that the very next 340 to come in had my name on it, so they called me to see if I wanted it). They placed the original order for this in April of 2009 and they just got it this week. Not knowing when a standard grip 340 would (if ever) show up, I decided to get this one.
 
That's one of the reasons I like doing business with Bud's. I ordered a CZ-452 Ultra Lux last month. The clerk called the distributor and verified they had the gun. Got it within 4 days. If Bud's doesn't have what you want, they'll check with their supplier and give you a pretty good time frame when you'll get it. I've done business with them for over 20 years and they,ve always been pretty accurate with availability dates. Good luck.
 
Finally got it in today. I actually canceled the order from where I originally had ordered it as I went to a different gun shop to order a rifle and asked the guy about the 617. He told me today that the 617 was on back order for four years. So I guess that they have orders for four years out to get this gun. That is what he said that the S&W rep told him, believe it or not. He had it in my hands in a month. I think that the six inch barrel would be to long, glad I got the four inch barrel it looks pretty sweet. All in all it only took me 5 months to get it.

Hello friends and neighbors // You will love it, yours looks great and I bet the 4" is sweet.
My 6" 10 shot is the only firearm purchase I did not dicker for.... Well ...I did get them to throw in a suitable case.They are just too rare on the shelves around here to pass up at a good price.

I called the store owner at home to be certain it would be pulled from the shelf. I had gotten there 15min. before closing on Sat. and they would not be open til Tues. to do the ATF paper work.

It depends. I waited half a year for the SRH .454 when it was a brand new model. Most of the time though the wait should not be more than a few days for the wholesale outfit to ship it. Ask what the holdup is.

Many years ago when I was twenty I worked as an armed security officer. My dad told me he would help me buy a my personal duty weapon. I went to a local gunshop and had them order a 6" Colt Python. This was January 1979. I kept checking back with them and they always had some excuse as to why it had not come in. In March 1979 I checked the dealer that they claimed they were getting one from. This dealer said he had one. I informed the first shop to forget it, that I didn't appreciate being lied to and that I would get it from the other dealer. The first dealer has since gone out of business (long gone). You have been waiting nearly six months. I would not put up with their crap and order it from someone else. I would let them know the first one who comes up with the gun gets my money the other can just wish.

It is a nice .22 I can see why these are hard to get. Being something to shoot on the cheap and they dont make very many of these at any given time from what I hear.

It matches my 357 and 44 which are both 6 inch. The next one for the collection would be the 500 I guess but that gun kinda scares me. I would have to find someone that has one and see if I can shoot it first. Plus what is it like three dollars a round?, probably wont happen.

I think there is another one about shooting your guns. Something like:
"I don't shoot my guns, I hold them while they shoot my targets."

Great Gun! I bought my 10 round 617 6" last year. It was my first handgun. I had too much experience with rented 22s and my dad's 1911/22 jamming up. No disappointments with the revolver.
