Academy Dissapointment

You ordered right before Christmas. Everybody sells out of everything this time of year and for tax purposes they don't restock until after the new year. Apparently, they are making a lot of other people happy because they are selling out of lots of stuff.

There are several Academy stores within an hours drive and one only 20 miles away. I get in one of them pretty regularly. Just like any other store there are things I like about them and things I don't like. I can always buy guns and ammo cheaper at a couple of local gunshops. I don't even price that type of thing at Academy.

As far as clothing, shoes, hunting gear etc. Academy falls between Walmart and Cabelas/BPS as to quality and price.

I did order a couple of pairs of pants and shirts from them in the past. I couldn't find the size and colors I wanted in local stores. Unlike companies such as LL Bean, Cabelas, REI, Midway and others they aren't really set up to be good at online orders. Online orders are a sideline for them. They are set up to stock brick and mortar stores.

We just got an Academy that opened on November. I went in on grand opening week, best deal was the 9mm on sale for $11.99. Ammo selection was decent. But overall the firearms section is small compared to all the other sections. I'm not a reloaded, but the section was tiny and basic, not a great selection of mags. It's on my way home from and close by. But I'd rather goto Sportsman Warehouse. Huge selection of firearms and you can pick up the rifles, lots of mags and accessories. Further drive but not as far as bass pro

Academy is a sporting goods store with a little bit of everything. It's true they do not have a large assortment of firearms or reloading stuff but what they have they sell. The size of their stores varies so selection varies. One thing I have learned is if you see something advertised you best check online and see if it's available in your particular store. One thing I do is order online for store pick up. That way I know it will be there before I head over there. I have scored ammo and primers with no shipping or hazmat for fair prices even when they were not available anywhere else. I picked up 1000 rds of their Monarch 115gr 9mm for the wife the other day for 10 bucks a box. Damn fine price for range ammo these days. I get my jeans and shirts there as well. They put Wranglers on sale when no one else does. Am I huge Academy fan? No but they do have their place if you take the time to check stock...

sparkyv: I remember back in the day going to the old Academy Surplus under IH-35 near 38th St in Austin. Loved that place. Then they changed. I'd buy calcium carbonate from them.

Academy also has some suspect "corporate" policies...

The employees in question didn't even see the perp afte he ran, let alone touch him, and they were still fired.
We don't have a local Academy, but if they ever darken our doorstep, they can go pound sand and Ill make sure all my shooting buddies know about this- and I know a lot of the shooters in this area. 😠
