:eek::cuss:

So its 2:40 something AM. Im posted up watching a movie{Mullholland Drive} and am just getting into it when someone I notice a shadow at the window then hear the sliding glass door try and be opened quitly.

I chamber a round in the 1911 thats sitting on the coffee table and said figure and noise disappears.

So im sitting around all paranoid, threw on some pants, grabbed a holster and a couple spare mags for the .45 and wondering *** is going on.

Not so worried about a home invasion especially after the loud cha-chink of doom from the 1911 but who knows. Maybe im about to get my house shot up :uhoh:.

In fact I think ill move away from the window/s. just thought the high road would appreciate one of ours checking in with a little nightly disturbance.

and woe to anyone dumb enough to put my mother or myself in danger.

damn it, ill never get to sleep now :(

yeah yeah, call the cops blah blah, I know. Id really rather not to be honest, unless things get a little more intresting that is.

Stay alert. Makes ya wonder tho, if your out in the boonies who it may be- stranger or someone who knows ya and what ya may have.

I'd call the cops. thats what they are paid for. At the very least they know that some one is in the area.

too secure the door you need a stick and drill a hole in the top thru the frame sliding door and part way thru the fixed door for a hinge pin.

A Bigfoot, maybe ?

I'd call the cops too...or animal control in case of the above :)

Nice to have the .45 either way, though, huh?

Stay safe,
DFW1911

Yea, I would call the police and let them know that you think you had a prowler. They'll likely do a drive through the area at least and maybe they'll notice somebody suspicious. And at least they'll have a report of it having happened, in case the guy comes back. Anybody who would try to break into a house that is obviously occupied is extremely dangerous.

My 7-pound rat terrier would have raised Cain. OTOH, he does that about five times a night with no provocation whatsoever...

So, how do you know when it's the real deal? It's like the boy who cried wolf! Or in this case the wolf who cried boy!

It's the dog who cried Woof!
My dog is the best security system I know of. He gave my wife enough time to get up, grab the shotgun, press-check the chamber, and move to the window to encounter the threat. All she saw was the guy jumping the fence out of the yard, but it's better than the alternative!
He warned me, camping one night, of a black bear in the campsite. I had time to arm myself, and q-u-i-e-t-l-y get in the truck.

Back in the early 70's I babysat my folks home and dog whilst they went on vacation. Rural home, summer nite. Sliding glass doors open with screen shut to catch fresh air.

I too was up late watching TV. Saw someone in backyard. Went to get 12ga pump. Racked the slide about the time the perp was on the patio. He ran so fast he nearly de-nutted himself clearing the back fence. To help him along, I stepped into the backyard and fired a round into the air, which he probably assumed was directed at him.

Exactly. If you have neighbors, they may not have a .45 & the BG may look for an easier target. I would recoup a little tax money & call LE.

Any time something like this occurs you need to call the law. Had this gone to hell fast you'd have the cavalry on the way and possibly an audio recording (911 calls are recorded) of what exactly happened.

It also puts the cop on notice that something's afoot in your neighborhood that needs attention. Yours won't be the last house they try to hit.

Something like this occurred to me last December right before New Year's. While I scared the burglar off I did call 911, which in 2 minutes I had 3 agencies on my doorstep and/or scouring the neighborhood. THey didn't catch him there were several homes robbed after they attempted mine.

I think she could get in. I wouldn't even go for the gun, but you can bet my dog would be sleeping outside...

Sliding glass doors need to be left unlubricated and somewhat neglected as to make lots of noise and slow down intruder.

It's fortunate you did not get too deep into the movie and think that sound is part of the back ground surround sound from it.

I agree with other posters, get LEO's and a Dog.

Your intruder was stealthy, the most dangerous kind. It's must have been very quiet down there for him to hear you rack the 1911.

update:

will call the fuzz next time for sure, some good points were made on that issiue.

nothing came of it but im going to be extra vigilant for a while. granted im always aware of whats going on but still, might pay even a little more attention to whats going on around here.

What  you mean you had to chamber a round, and you weren't ready to rock and roll?

Just as well, at least the sound may have moved whomever it was on.

But now, they know you have at least one weapon, maybe more. Keep that in mind.

a few nights ago, my mom had someone enter her house and then leave a few seconds later. My younger brother(17) wasnt home at the time and she called me and my older brother to see if it was us. I was at a buddies and told her to call the police and i would be there soon. I got there 4 minutes later, grabbed a flashlight and my 10mm pistol and checked the perimeter for anyone or signs of an attempted forced entry. I came back in and the responding officer just called. It took 7-8 minutes for an officer to arrive in the area and call her after she first called dispatch.

I know that what i did was the police officers job but you really dont think in times of stress, you just act. I waited with her until 1230am when my little brother got home and then checked all the windows and dorrs before i left. Im thinking it was some drunk person at the wrong house or it was a younger kid looking for something to steal really quick. My moms ankle biting terrier probably scared them off because his bark is alot bigger than his bite.

Get a sign that says "beware of dog"
it's easier than the real thing.... if only i got paid for the time it took to properly train my dog. Of course, a dog is better.

..and call the cops; this is their whole milieu. You could've slept soundly with a black-and-white on the corner, instead of white-knuckling your 45 til dawn.
