So, I consider myself a bit of a writer, and I think I know my way around the English language fairly well. Every once in a while, especially when I'm emotionally riled, I crank out something to help vent. I'd like to think that it turns out well.
So, here's what I wrote the other night after reading some of the anti's ridiculous propoganda, and having to have a self-counseling session to steel myself to carry on the fight. Writing can be very cathartic. I tried to write this in the style of older, classical literature, and I try to evoke the "revolutionary" feel. If you want to distribute this or post it elsewhere, please give credit properly, or link to this thread. It is much appreciated!
I call it "The Cry of the Patriot." I hope you enjoy it. -Christopher Thulien
The Cry of the Patriot
A Patriot stood among a crowd.
“Hearken to me, children of Liberty!
Gather to the standard, soldiers of Freedom!
Rush to your posts, for the lines may still hold!
A darkness is coming-”
Cried the Patriot.
“It is the cloud of tyranny,
It is the specter of slavery,
It is the pestilence of despotism,
It is the stench of betrayal,
It is the dark and bitter liquor of lies,
It is the death of principle;
Come forth, ye free souls, and stand with me,
For this darkness is close at hand!”
Cried the Patriot.
And the People gathered to the Patriot.
-But how do we stave off this darkness?-
The Patriot replied;
“Just as we warm ourselves in the cold,
As we light our way in the night,
As we dry away the dampness of the rain,
We shall light a fire!
The fire will come from our spirit,
It shall jump from our fury,
It shall stem from our determination,
It shall take root in our desire to remain free,
And in this kindling a flame shall rise!
We will feed it with the sparks issuing forth:
From turning your pitchforks into pikes!
From grinding your files into knives!
From carving your staves into spears!
From beating your plowshares into swords!
From the forging of rifle barrels and locks!
And from the blades of your tools and the mouths of your rifles shall freedom spring!”
In the crowd, many took their leave, unable to bear the burden of the Patriot’s words.
Few remained.
But the few were lovers of freedom, of all creeds and colors.
Of all persuasions. Of all faiths.
The bravest of the many. They for whom freedom was the essence of their existence.
And in each of them, the Patriot saw the fire burn, and he was glad.
-When do we begin?-
And the Patriot replied to his fellows:
“Now- but wait! For our work is not yet done here,
For those who left are unaware of the fate that awaits them, but not by our hand.”
“Each of you shall tell them thus-
That the consequences of failure shall not be borne by the heroic dead;
It shall be borne by those who did not stand, for no one is left who can stand for them.
It shall be borne by those who did not fight, for no one is left who can draw a sword for them.
It shall be borne by those who sought justice in power, not understanding the corruption of absolutism.
It shall be borne by those who sought safety in chains, for they knew not what the dangers of Liberty afforded them.
It shall be they who suffer in the end, should we all be gone.”
And the Patriot cried:
“Let it be known that we will not suffer quietly!
Let it be known we shall not be led to slaughter!
Let it be known that no chains, ropes or whips will bind us!
But let it be known also that to us our freedom is as our life- to lose it would be to perish!”
And the Patriot’s fellows looked upon him in awe as he concluded thus:
“For now is when we fight,
And on our principles we stand.
And if on the day should the darkness cover us,
If the Liberty Bell tolls its final chorale,
If the tyrant usurps us,
If despotism defiles us,
And in that final hour if all is lost…”
With pride in their bosom and strength in their hearts, the fellows watched:
The Patriot took a rifle in hand and raised it to the sky- an appeal to heaven;
“LET IT BE KNOWN THAT WE PATRIOTS DIED FREE!”
