I want one that I can carry in the storage compartment in my door of my car and my pocket.

Here are the specifications I'm thinking...
-.38 +P
-2in barrel
-WITH hammer
-NOT too painful
-Not too expensive
-Quality
-Warranty

I was thinking the Smith & Wesson 637?
I was also thinking of the Taurus 85?
I hear the quality is much better with the S&W

These are really my only options...

And the laws that cover loaded firearms in your state?

In some states, like Missouri, you can have a loaded handgun in your vehicle without a CCW. But there are a lot of other states that would not look to kindly on it.

I know the laws. Yes I can carry it anywhere in the car loaded.
In the glovebox, underneath the seat, anywhere.

My question is about the gun

That would be my understanding as well – I think you’re on the right track with the Smith.

IMHO the Smith is the way to go. The quality is worth the extra money spent. There is a recent thread about someones Taurus breaking the first trip to the range. Not saying that doesn't happen to S&W but the odds of it happening are lower. Another good option is a Ruger SP101. Built like a tank. I've bought Smith and Ruger snubbies used for well under $300. At that price range they are a steal!

Just making sure.

O K. Go with a revolver of a quality manufacture. Revolvers tend not to collect as much dirt in the inerds as a semi-auto will. It will withstand the bouncing around much better then the semi-auto. Cars and pickups are hostile environments for handguns.

buds has a scandium s&w m360 for $409. s&w has a $30 rebate untill the end of the year.

I just picked up 2 S&W J frames, a model 442 1 7/8 inch barrel .38 + P and a S&W model 640 2 1/8 inch barrel in 357 mag.

Both are great shooter's. So my advice is, skip the Taurus and get a Smith.

Do you think my gun shop would value that rebate from Smith & Wesson?

They are the most respectable, biggest, and clean shooting range in all of Arizona (probably the out of the whole West)

or Do I have to order the gun from S&W?

I remember a range at I17 and Carefree Hiway back in the 70's. According to Google maps it is still there!

Any old timers remember Bonds Gun Shop, 24th & Indian School Rd. I bought my first handgun there in 72.

I think the rebate is mail in so you don't need to order from S&W. I have a 638 which I like a lot.

I see from your profile that you are from my home state and city. I think you'd better re-read the AZ gun laws as it relates to vehicle and carry. AZ law allows loaded carry in a vehicle IF the gun is in a case, holster, or container. The Glove box is considered a container. Courts have generally interpreted that there needs to be an intervening step to retrieve the gun, like opening the glove box, unsnapping the holster catch, opening a container or unzipping the scabbard. Even an open holster without some kind of retaining strap could wind you up in violation of the law.

While the gun you have selected would work great for the purpose you describe, just throwing it in the open map holder of the door or under the seat without being in a holster will likely get you arrested if you don't have a CCW permit.

From the NRA ILA gun laws for AZ: It is unlawful to carry a firearm concealed within the immediate control of any person in or on a means of transportation. This does not apply to firearms carried in a case, holster or scabbard in a means of transportation or a storage compartment, trunk, pack, luggage, or glove compartment of a means of transportation.
