Speakin' of Dying Cartridges...

Think that w/ the newer bullets and the shorter bolt and Bbl, .270 WSM rifles do the same work but are easier in the field.

If I had to make a wild guess, I’d say the 7 mag would outsell the .270 WSM by 20 to 50 times over.

I found a website that lists the top 90 cartridges. Your beloved .270 is 19th, the 7 mag is 22nd. .270 WSM is not there

I think for most people the availability of factory ammunition is more important than action length, bolt throw, efficiency, standard deviation, case capacity, 20" barrel performance, etc.

All of the traditional long action cartridges have been obsoleted by something newer (but far less popular).

Culture certainly plays a part as well.

You typically lose a round with the WSMs
The only rifle that has reduced capacity is Savage. They are 2+1 in the WSM cartridges while everyone else is 3+1 just like conventional belted magnums. My only example was a Winchester 70 Classic and I never had any feeding issues. I liked both the rifle, and cartridge quite well, but just decided a 30-06, or even 308 was more than enough cartridge for my needs. And with Winchester I get 5+1 with standard cartridges.

I like the WSM's and would choose the 300 WSM over the 300 WM, but don't believe it will ever overtake it. I'm a little surprised to see it dropped and 270 WSM still in production. The 300 was by far the most popular, with 270 WSM in 2nd place.

But for one thing cartridge choices are changing. Some new rifles that have been introduced recently aren't even available in 30-06 or 270. I saw some numbers from 2018 showing almost 1/2 of new bolt guns that year were 6.5 CM. The 300 WM was #2 and 308 #3. Only accounting for about 10% of bolt rifle sales. The 30-06 and 270 were lumped together in the "other" category with everything else.

I don't see that as a bad omen, everybody that wants a 30-06 and 270 already have one

And that's it in a nut-shell.

HEY...as long as that Creedborg is running around that means there will be a healthy supply of 6.5mm bullets for my 6.5 Swede. :D
The two big reasons why I picked that caliber...it was a good old-school caliber that I've always been interested in for using on critters AND...when I pull up to the range and see these guys with their CM's and see me with my home-built beater shooting less than 1"...well...yeah...its nice :)

I have a REAL, REAL hard time believing a .270 WSM (which is still listed) is more popular than a Remington 7mm Mag
Well I don't know but it is possible and the only reason I say that is used 7mm Mags for sale are as common as Hackberry leaves in October. Why buy a new one?

It is - 7x57 necked down to 25 cal is called the 257 Roberts, and it's been around for about a century now.
Word.
No, it isn't. A quarter bore Creedmoor is what we need.

250 Savage Ackley?

you know...that actually may be my next home build...in a major pinch you can form from 243 brass and trim and I've been wanting a quarter bore for a long time...

That's because you frequent this forum & @LoonWulf & @troy fairweather are 7mm evangelists

Shame about 325WSM. It & 8mm Rem Mag still make the most sense to me as a North American all rounder.
I would like to see the 8mm Remington Magnum take off !
I think it would be great cartridge!

And I love the 7mm cartridges!!

10 years ago it seemed to be the consensus on forums like this that the 300 WSM was going to make the .300 Win Mag obsolete, and yet the WM is always in the top 5 for national sales.
As a hunting round it comes pretty close in most respects practicality wise. But theres nostalgia, personal experience etc....My oldest hunting buddy did the switch then switched back to the WM. Just liked it better.
250 Savage Ackley?
Had one....140 creedmoor data matched almost exactly with 115 data for the 250AI lol. I wish mine had a faster twist, its all i didnt like about it.

I WILL build another with a 1-8twist barrel.

I guess I am missing what's going on here. I looked at the current Winchester website and the EW/SS is currently listed for 13 cartridges, including the 7MM Remington Magnum. Is their website not correct?

300 Win mag has a little more Shaq deisel.

The real reason 270 WSM isn't more popular, is that the world isn't a big or wild enough place to handle it. I think if you could go back 50 million years or so it would be a lot more popular. Probably with Partitions or Solids.

But why hasn't that argument held for the 300 WSM vs. .300 Win Mag? ...

Well...

Figure this particular rifle...?

The .270 WSM/7mm RM buyer is lookin' for energy and efficiency. In the 150/160 gr. race - the .270 WSM wins.

For the .300 WM/.300 WSM, the buyer is looking for power, and in the 200 gr. race - the .300 WM wins, especially w/ the longer Bbl.

My guess.

Best not to paint w/ too broad a brush.

This is one particular rifle... today.

Am sure the ole .30-30, on some level, would beat all comers.

... but that's not the point.

I don't get too exited about one companies doings. I am not selling my 7-08 Tikka anytime soon. Nothing saying they won't resume production if things ever return to normal. Plenty of options in any case like reloading or rebarreling.

I'm a HUGE 7mm fan. The 7mm08 is my favorite cartridge of all time. It does everything the .308 can do and it does it better...

IMO for deer and close range elk hunting it is the perfect cartridge. 120-140 for deer and 150 or 160 for elk. And my favorite AR-15 Is a 7mm Wildcat called the 7mm Valkyrie AR. It is 90% of what the 7mm08 is with 140grain bullets and below.
