Spiller and Burr Malfunctions

Cooldill,
It's the bolt spring tension. The drag of the bolt after dropping is why the increase needed in cocking. Re-contour the bolt spring along with thining the width of the bolt spring. There only needs to be 3-4 lbs of pressure on the bolt (it probably has 8 or 9 right now).
Original Colt bolt springs were the thinner of the two on the combo spring. The Italians have it backwards.

Yap, you got it. (Saw her post after I posted).
Okay great, sounds good. I'll pull it open this weekend (going to be very busy rest of week) and will see what I can do.

Them silly Italians, they also do the barrel latch spring back words on the cavalry LeMat. They make it to short so it flips open instead of closed.

Okay, so I got the gun apart. I polished the cylinder pin with 400 grit sandpaper, same for the sides of the bolt and hand. I checked for any burrs in the frame and ran a fine file through the slots to break any that were hidden. Then I reduced the sides of the bolt spring and put everything back together. It really helped, the gun operates smoother now. The "hike" needed at the end of the hammer pull is now gone.

Then I checked the cylinder gap. It measures at .007". I am just worried the gun's fouling issues won't be cured... I don't know! :(

i had the same problem with a 70's vintage lyman/uberti 1858 in 36. i now use crisco or tallow/beeswax [temp dependent] over the ball lube. no more problem.

I would take the cylinder out, wipe off the cylinder pin, put some oil on it, reassemble and the gun would run smooth.

What kinda oil? The wrong kind can gum up the works.

As for me and my house, we keep our sixguns running with bore butter. That includes the internals and the arbor/cylinder pin. Course, we also clean up afterwards with bore butter and preserve them for storage with bore butter.

Bore Butter is nothing more than 5 Parts Extra Virgin Olive Oil (Goya doesn't get moldy) and 1 Parts Beeswax.

We wipe and relubricate the cylinder pin every couple of cylinders worth of shooting.

Great gun, quite accurate and a joy to shoot.

Ballistol was what I was using at the range.

You say bore butter is the stuff for cylinder pins? Will the commercial stuff work?

Sure will, used to use it. Ballistol is a great product too but not for lubing a cylinder pin. It's good for cleaning and wiping the bore and could be used in place of bore butter but why complicate things?

My Remington NMA would bind up by the third cylinder and I was told to lube the pin. I use Ballistol and it works quite well. I haven't tried to see how long it'll work as I generally apply a little more around the third cylinder.

It's going to help but like the originals, you're not going to shoot it all day without maintenance. Consider making periodic lubrication of the cylinder pin part of your routine.

Yeah, I know that but TWO rounds and it locked up badly.

Have you had a chance to shoot the spiller and burr again cooldill?
If so, I hope everything went well
Thank you so much 44, I am currently waiting on a backordered nipple wrench for the gun before I shoot it again. I also need some bore butter for the pin. I definatly want to get it to the range as soon as I can, I think it will be a good shooter. Thanks for the thought!
