Standard Pressure .45 ACP Ammo

I'm getting old and tired of hot recoil.
Reload.
185 Gr at around 850 to 900 FPS
200 Gr at around 800 to 850 FPS
with a light load of fast powder. :)

I carry standard velocity 230 grain Winchester Rangers in my 45. But at the range I mostly shot reloads that are below standard velocity. Much more fun than shooting the heavy stuff all the time.

I like the Hornady TAP +P 230 grain loads. The XTP bullets are known not to expand as much as others, so the added velocity couldn't hurt. I don't mind the recoil. I actually don't notice much of a difference between those and the standard pressure loads.

Hydro Shok

In .45ACP, I do not think that you can do better than using the 230 grain standard pressure HYDRO SHOK loads. These were the most effective loads that you could get in an auto until the high velocity .40 S&W loads hit the market.

Standard recoil, blast and noise with 90% plus stopping power. Interestingly, the HYDRO SHOK could also penetrate adequately.

The only time I did not use them was in an old SERIES 70 Government model COLT. It would not feed the HS with 100% reliability. I used WINCHESTER "white box" 230 hollow point in that one gun.

Do not Like +P ammo for .45's

I use +P ammo in my 9mm's. When it comes to my .45's I prefer the Winchester 230gr Bonded Law Enforcement Ammo. Unless I had a .45 with a 3 inch Barrel. I see no need for +P ammo in a .45. I have tried +P ammo several times in My .45's. The recoil is pretty stout, but that did not bother me. It just seemed to be much harder on my guns to me. If you are Recoil sensitive I would stay away from it. Another Very Good .45 load would be the Federal 230gr HST.

The Best to You and Yours!

Frank

+P anything equals more velocity and either more penetration or expansion.

If you look at ammo manufacturers tests of their own ammo (Speer makes an enlightening chart) you really don't gain a lot if any.

I shoot +P in K frame guns and +P+ in magnums but other than that I'm no big fan of +P or +P+ ammo.

It seems that if you need more power in that 9mm use a 357 SIG etc.

low recoil hi speed ammo

I have used ammo made by RBCD. It is extremely fast and light, just 90 grains and over 2000 fps. Gives you 800 plus foot pounds and a major power factor. Pretty expensive though. It feels like a target load, very mild recoil, although most of the time no matter what i shoot through my various 45's I barely notice the recoil. Too focused on hitting the little bullseye :)

Its the only ammo I use in my carry 45, their web site has some pretty awesome test results and many other calibers as well.
Thanks

There isn't that many offerings of .45 acp +p if compared to the .38 spl or 9mm as the gain in power isn't very significant. For a 185 grain bullet you can get perhaps an extra 150-200 fps average velcoity with +P, with the 230gr you only get around 100 fps more. If you wanted to increase your .45's power and velocity much you need to go to the SUPER or a ROWLAND.

IMO the .45 doesn't need any more than standard velocity ammo. I don't think the gain in power or velocity is worth the extra recoil or wear and tear on the gun.

i like shooting the standard pressure rounds in my 45 also. its a bit much for target shooting, besides, paper kills easy. for me, the +p stuff is for ccw where your life is on the line. the +p stuff is no fun to shoot. but if it come down to extra recoil vs. saving my life, i'll take the extra recoil. i think if you got into a real gunfight, you would have so much adrenaline going, you wouldn't even notice the recoil.

I tried some +P ammo recently. 230 grains @ 960 FPS according to the manufacturer. Rounds were jumping out of the mag (Checkmate 7 round magazine and Wilson 47D with brand new ISMI spring) under recoil and causing the slide to lock back. I am sure with some respringing I could make it function reliably but I think the gun is trying to tell me something. Even if I got it to function reliably under range conditions I wouldn't trust it.

Also, way to much muzzle flip and recoil to shoot at the speed I think I should be able to and still make good hits.

I have a +P 230 grain HST I recovered earlier this week. It is the fiercest looking thing I've ever seen. Looks like it more than doubled in size, didn't lose any weight, and the 'petals' are more like 'fingers'.

The thing looks like one a robot baby from the matrix. I will carry HST from now on in every gun I can.

Federal 230 HST. +P or standard load, expansion and penetration are impressive. Google it and take a look at photos, and read up.

Bought two boxes of it last week. When the Ranger finally goes, HST will be the primary diet.

I have used ammo made by RBCD. It is extremely fast and light, just 90 grains and over 2000 fps. Gives you 800 plus foot pounds

I would suggest you do more research and skip their mall ninja ads. Go get a good HP . Any of the good brands will do I perfer the 185 +P Corbon DPX But I ahve no trouble with Federal, Remington or and of the big guys
