Steyr AUG and TAVOR Comparison

On barrels: I thought the Tavor was supposed to have a long barreled version, but I have never seen it.

I got the 18" barrel by choice. I know the bayonet lug isn't very useful, but I like it. The overall length doesn't change that much and I get a little better velocity with standard ammo. It is still short and handy compared to my AR's.

I was disappointed that they canceled the 5.45 conversion kit. I was hoping to get that. If they sell a separte rifle, I am not sure it would be worth buying another one.

I'd rather see one offered in 7.62x39 than the 5.45x39....the current tavor in 5.56 I'd prefer over the 5.45

Never held a Tavor. In the late 80s I was given a chance to shoot an AUG at the range. If I remember correctly its carry handle was a 1 1/2 power scope with a small circle which was supposed to cover a man, head to toe, at 100 yards. That little circle made lining up and centering a 12" black on a bullseye target verrrrrry easy!

I shot three shots, all touching , dead center in the X ring at 100 yards. It was (is) the tightest three shot group I have ever fired with any military rifle. Knowing full well that I couldn't ever do it again, I declined to shoot any further, trying to act coolio, like I did that every morning as a warm up to SERIOUS shooting! LOL

To state that I was impressed with AUGs is the understatement of the century.

I have the M21 tritium site that they make for the Tavor. Mine has an X reticle. If you shoot NRA 100 yard targets, the X fits right over the black circle. Works pretty good with that rifle.

I have never had any rifle of any type that maintained a clean chamber. However, I recently acquired an LWRC piston AR upper so I will see how that works.

Also, it isn't a matter of if it gets dirty, but if it keeps working despite being dirty.

I was mentioning the fouling because it's more of annoyance than anything. I suspect that even if you never cleaned the powder fouling out of the receiver or off the bolt carrier the rifle would keep running until the barrel was shot out.
