Sticker shock! Powder price

I've been lucky and have good prices locally. I'm paying $20 per lb here when the average gunshop in the area is charging $31 lb. Like said, time to buy 8 lb containers.

HazMat went up on my last order to PV a few weeks back. Varget which was $139.50 is now $145/8# jug.
Hodgdon has become very pricey of late. I bought 8lbs Varget for $129.99 less than nine months ago...no way I'm paying $145 now.
At Hodgdon's rate of increase (12% a year) 8lbs of Varget will cost $204 in three years.
I'll be switching to Ramshot TAC when the Varget gets used up.

My buddy uses Ramshot TAC. With this change in pricing and the fact that Ramshot TAC is still $125/8# jug, I may have to give it a try as well.

edit: Apparently Ramshot TAC went up a smidge as well. $127.50/8# jug now. Still $20 cheaper than Varget.

Fortunately in SW MI we have a local distributor of powders who is very competitive on his pricing. I purchased 8lb PROMO for ca $89 + tax.

All business needs to make a profit to stay in business. It is amazing that you think that you need X$ but not the next guy. Walmart etc. have closed many local business, and we complain because we don't have a choice, yet we don't want to pay these people to stay in business. You are paying for the convenience. The Govt. knows who and what with the internet. Save a dollar and lose your rights.

yes, AND no. FIRST, THANK GOD that wal-mart is NOT into reloading components! I like mom and pops shops, in most things, for most products. i may be a bit biased in that as i worked my entire career (in a different industry) in them. and i will happily pay a LITTLE extra to keep them in business and for their expertise and advice. but, there is also a limit. part of that is what the product is also. on gunpowder, most of us are not going to need a lot of advice that we can not get from books, or forums like this. so, an additional $10.00 markup over normal retail prices, unless the shop is miles and miles from anyplace else that sells it is a bit over the top. now if he was talking about a gun part, that took some in depth knowledge on how to install it, it may very well be worth a large markup just for the advice. with the (in my opinion rip off) haz mat fee on powder and primers, i would never expect to be able to buy components subject to that fee, for the same price as on line. but unless i have the dealer make a special order, i also do not expect to pay for the entire orders haz mat fee in 2 or 3 bottles of powder either. i have worked for dealers that get that, and some that did not. the ones that insisted on making large markups on everything, especially in hard economic times, are no longer in business. / as for the government and the internet. yes, i am absolutely certain that there is a medium sized "department" just to watch forums dealing with firearms, like this one. i really would not doubt that they have tracking software on every firearm related website out there.

I like that. I buy 8#'ers to try but I won't pay over $10 a pound. I didn't anyway but now that I have the AR to load for I might have to change the rule.

Be sure to let us all know when you find a reputable source for non-decomposing powder for <$10 a pound!

I can't remember the last time I paid $10 for a pound of current mfg. canister grade powder.

I just looked it up from the supplier. It's still available from $10.00 a pound to $12.50 a pound. This is new powder not pull down or surplus, but then I also use tose powders with no problems, they aren't fuming yet.

I think all the Hodgdon powders at my LGS are $20.95.
They even dropped the price on Trail Boss down to $13.95/9oz, that's about $25/pound.

What powder from what supplier? I demand proof of this outrageous statement (so I can buy some too!)

Elkins45

To the best of my knowledge there are only 3 suppliers now selling surplus powder, they are

gibrass
hi-techammo
wideners

of these 3 only one offers new powder and yes he sells it for $10.00 to $12.50 a lb.

Do a search just as I had to do, if I'm able to search this out I'm more than sure that most anyone is able to do the same. Heck I can't even post a picture on a computor.

Google is a great friend to have when searching for an answer for most anything.

Hazmet charges are good for up to 4 eight lb. jugs. That ends up to only $6.25 per jug or $ .78 cents per lb. Not to bad in my book. Its how I usually order.

If you watch, there are times they'll give a spec and pay the hazmet for you.

FIRST, THANK GOD that wal-mart is NOT into reloading components!

They sell them in my area - it is still cheaper for me to order through my local club; since the distributor delivers on their truck, hazmat do not exist ad shipping is very little since the club buys enough targets for a full truck at a time

Look it up, I furnished the names. Google is a friend.

Very unhelpful response. First you say you can get you can get powder for $10/lb that is NOT surplus, then you give information about sites selling surplus. Telling us to use Google to resolve your own contradiction don't get us anywhere. Just because it's "new" doesn't mean it's not surplus.

So contrary to your first post on the subject, you are NOT buying powder for that price that isn't surplus or pull-down. If I'm wrong and you're getting canister grade powder for that, please, tell me.

Eh, I won't bash Walmart. The ones in my area sell powder for under 25 bucks a pound....With that said, I only buy from Walmart in a pinch out of economics. I usually just bite the bullet once a year and order 10k primers and 20 or so pounds of powder online.

Actually one of those 3 sellers does sell new powder like 4895, IMR5010 and IMR7383 for as little as $10/lb.

They also sell NEW WC powders, not pull-down powders for $12/lb...

All bulk grade mil-surp, though.
