Yep.. came home from range, was tired as hell so i crashed into bed. wake up and notice vehicle has been ransacked. Gun is missing (just 1).. they left the case behind.

It's purchased through an FFL (in GA you can do it through private party as well) so it has all the paper trail.

went to 2 police precincts to file the report and they were both closed (useless as usual).

Other things stolen... leather gloves, garage door openener.... a phone.... and some other small stuff.

Obviously my concern is the firearm. Now i have armed and dangerous hoodlums targetting my neighborhood with my gun (prints and serial # traceable back to me). just lovely.

What should i do, what can i do really? :cuss: :banghead:

Personally I'd be worried about the garage door opener too. Means they could have entry to your house, or at least your garage while you are away and steal quite a bit more.

Try again whenever they are open. Or call 911 ASAP. Have them come out and do the report on the scene.

I'll have the garage openers disconnected until i get them recoded.

This is the 2nd time in 2 weeks that they've hit a vehicle of mine. This time it was literally right out side my window.

BTDT, it sucks. Call the police ASAP, preserve the evidence--they'll dust for prints. Have your serial number available. Get the police report number, as this will fade quickly from their consciousness and you may want to remind them by asking for any progress in a week or two. Notify your insurance co. (Homeowner's carrier, I think, as the vehicle was parked at home, right?)

Good luck.

come on man common sense.......call 911 cancell your cell account change your garage door code/frequency. The gun is gone you will never see it again. I would worry about what personal info is on your phone at this point.

Out of couriousity why did you come up on THR to ask us what to do? You really should already know these answers for initial responce.

cops are coming.

I knew the answers i just wanted to make sure there wasn't somethign else i am supposed to do (ATF side and so on). laws change often

and i guess i wanted to share what has happened because if it can happen here, then frankly it's scary

Garage door opener ... probably can changes codes or just remove the power. Speaking of garage door security, hope you all are aware of how easy it is to slip a coat hanger around the top of the door and grab the emergency release on most garage doors. If you have an emergency release pull cord, consider having just the cord with no knot or handle at the end.

Mention the phone to the police. If it is used, it may be possible to trace calls and produce a lead to the thief.

To make an insurance claim, it may be required to note whether your vehcile was locked or unlocked as shown on the police report. You haven't mentioned if you locked it or not in your posts.

Unless you have an FFL you have no obligation to notify the ATF. Try to remember if you had any keys or personal documents in the car that they might have grabbed too.

DO NOT let the Feds recover it. (if it gets recovered at all)
I've been waiting 18 months now for my guns to sit (well, hell, I have no idea) because the IDIOT federal prosecuters can't release them.

Angry doesn't really begin. Even the recovering PD department is embarrased about it. Call the PD, file a report, and they'll go out on the wire and sooner or later they will show up.

Bummer BTW, BTDT,

Do not wait for a stolen gun to "show up."
Get a copy of the official police report with make, model, and serial number, plus any other paperwork showing it in your name.
Personally go to all the gun shows, gun stores and pawn shops you can get to. If you find it, don't argue with the vendor, go immediately to the police, show them the report and tell them where the gun is located.

A guy here had many guns stolen in a house burglary, along with other portable valuables, and he got maybe 1/3 of his guns back over several years of personal searching. He got NOTHING back through channels.

If you want it back, go get it.

It's a kimber custom rl 2.

I think i was being targetted because they left a lot of expensive stuff behind and did not even try to use the phone this time.

Likely they got startled when they saw what they broke into but for some reason went right to where i had this thing.. what is the chance really... So basically they steal a gun + a cheap phone and some other handy things but leave a few grand in equipment untouched? I know it was bolted down real good but not even a pry mark on any of it.... :scrutiny:

Why would you ever leave a gun in your car?? Put your car in the garage and get a dog to alert you to prowlers. And it was probably one of your neighbors that know you keep guns.

Solar,
I'm really sorry that someone made off with your stuff, and respectfully, I HAVE to ask... especially in that you've been ripped off before; why in the world did you leave gun, phone, etc in your vehicle? I'm sitting here dumbfounded.

If the phone is relatively modern (last few years), many (most? all?) of them now come equipped with GPS locators so emergency services have a chance to find you when you dial 911. Seems like that could potentially be useful for the cops getting a lead on whoever stole it?
