I want a .40 but something with the strongest design. Definitely not a 9mm design with a .40 barrel.

I've heard some about the USP being designed for the .40 from the ground up, but i'd like to see what other options are on the table.

The Steyr M (out of production - but can still be found NIB) and M-A1 (current offering) were designed from the outset for .40 S&W.

bb226,
The H&K USP has been around since before the .40cal. I don't expect you will get much inlightenment from this thread. You will get, I have a ________in 40cal and I am happy with it, and blah, blah, blah. Don't mean to be a pesimist, but whatever info it is that you really after needs to be made more clear. I don't think any specific handgun was specifically made for the .40cal. Maybe do a poll titled "What model handgun has the longest service life in .40cal" or something along those lines.

How about a Dan Wesson Razorback (10mm 1911) with a 40SW barrel swap?

I am going to say it is the USP.
These guns were designed from the outset to handle the .40 S&W and I don't know of any that have 'mysteriously' blown up.

Back when I bought a few of the much maligned S&W Sigmas, I remember reading they were designed for the 40 S&W from the get-go.

Springfield XD, hammer forged barrel, outstanding chamber support. This thing will take the heaviest loads you can pack into the 40 S&W case.:D

USP Tactical in 40, just screw the suppressor on and go:evil:. Designed by H&K for the 40 from day one, at least that's what H&K says. The S&W M&P40 deserves a look also. There is some family tie between the 40 and S&W, but I forget what it is:D.

The Beretta 96fs is supposed to have fairly low recoil and you can get the entire gun made in stainless steel. Beretta is a company that really embraces the .40 S&W especailly for law enforcement.

I shot An Inox 96 with a Brig slide 2 days ago. I was able to put a few rounds thru it, then I went back to shooting my PX4.

It's hard to say exactly - because the recoil is different. But honestly - I shot better with my PX4 (only the 2nd time I've been out to the range with it), and the recoil seems slightly less in the PX4. That's pretty kewl for a polymer gun.

I've never been a 40 cal fan. I've always preferred 9mm and 45 ACP. After shooting the PX4 in 2006, I always said, over and over, that if I ever get a 40 cal gun - that would be the one. Well, I finally sucked it up and got one.

I like it a lot. It will probably be my only 40 cal. But, I think it's a great gun.

I like my H&K USP .40,tried S&W and Glock did not care for those at all.
But the Springfield XD comes in a close second to me.

...

Yep, have to agree with ship wrecks comments on the Px4 40cal.

However, I did shoot a LEO's Sig P226 40cal DAK, and honestly, I thought the gun was a 45cal.. sweet

But for ccw, and have never shot a Sig P229 40cal, but have one in 9mm, I would have to say my bet is that the P229 40cal is both ccw, and forgiving in the recoil area.

So, I would say, either the Beretta Px4, or the Sig P229

But, if I had to choose one for the long haul, I'd go with the Sig

S&W 4006. All the 3rd gen S&W stainless guns are ridiculously overbuilt. When I'm pushing the envelope with handloads, I use one of the XX06 guns.

The Baby Eagles as pretty darn stout, too.
