Student dies from gun

My wife doesn't like guns for the very reason of the initial post. Too many kids in Hastings, MN were "playing" with guns at parties and managed to kill others. (Not all at one party, but several different ones throughout several years) It's kind of sad that kids get the urge to play with guns, not bothering to check if they're loaded or not, and then add in the alcohol factor..... IIR, there had to be a good half a dozen kids she knew whose lives ended tragically. (All of them were under 21 and shouldn't have been drinking, anyways)

Oh man, I'm sorry to hear. I graduated from KU in '05, I was B section. Could you please PM me the name? Did this happen over zero term? School was out this past week, we had both B and A section co-ops at work. This sucks. There are A LOT of people with guns at KU and I thought if anyone were to get shot it would be one of the local scum bags while trying to rob a student house. Do you know if it was at the apartments or off campus?

You might want to edit your post.

I already did, saying that if you wanted to comment to please read the thread first.

Other than that, there's nothing to edit. Of course a person pulled the trigger of the gun, show me where I said it went off by itself.

I think this may be it. The location in the article is not at campus but a Detroit suburb.

Man killed in Auburn Hills apartment

Santiago Esparza / The Detroit News

AUBURN HILLS -- Police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Saturday morning in an apartment in the 2600 block of the Beacon Hill Apartments.

Officers responded to a call at the home around 2:30 a.m. and found a 21-year-old Pinckney man fatally shot, Auburn Hills Police said in a press release. The man was shot once in the head and pronounced dead at the scene.

Police found several people who were buddies in the home and identified a 22-year-old South Lyon man as the shooter, the release stated. The people had been at the apartment since Friday evening, police said.

Auburn Hills Police declined further comment Saturday afternoon. Management for the apartment complex would not comment on the shooting.

Oakland County prosecutors are expected to review the case in the next two days, the release said.

Ukraine Train,

That's gotta be it. In the Flint/Detroit area.. I checked Facebook but I can't see the kid's profile because of his settings so I can't check his hometown.

You are saying that a gun killed a person, and you did not edit it to correct that statement. Here's your thread starter:

No news articles on it yet, as far as I know.

A friend of a friend was killed recently(maybe today or last night) by a handgun. The kid was a student at the same school me and my friend go to. They were at a party and there was definitely alcohol was involved. I don't know any details other than the gun discharged and he was struck in the head.

You're going to keep getting called on it till you go back and fix it. Alot of folks dont read thru the entire thread, so they didnt see where you said you made a poor choice of words. You should edit/reword your original post. My condolences to the family of the fallen man.

This is a message board, reading posts is generally encouraged. I edited my first post to read the thread before commenting. If someone can't follow that simple disclaimer, then they have other problems.

So the handgun killed him by itself? Really, that's amazing!

You know, some of you are completely missing the point. I haven't seen anywhere where he is accusing the gun of killing the kid. Maybe the choice of words wasn't the best, but if a pro gun guy is getting treated so harshly for a bad wording, I'd hate to see how a fence sitter who could be educated, is treated, when they show any sort of ignorance.

South Lyon man charged in accidental shooting that killed fraternity brother

Mike Martindale / The Detroit News

ROCHESTER HILLS -- A 22-year-old South Lyon man was charged Monday with involuntary manslaughter in the weekend fatal shooting of a fraternity brother at a party in Auburn Hills.

Police said Marcus Jun-Mon Yu was attending a party in the Beacon Hills Apartments when the incident occurred about 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

"The investigation shows he was playing with a handgun in a bedroom and it went off, striking the victim," said Auburn Hills Police Lt. James Manning.

The victim, Karl Joseph Hansen, 21, of Pinckney was dead at the scene of a single gunshot wound to the head, police said.

Yu is an engineering student at Kettering University in Flint and was attending the Auburn Hills party with fraternity brothers and fellow students, police said.

"They are all engineering students and were about to start six-month internships at different locations so they got together to celebrate," said Manning. "There is nothing to indicate this was anything but a matter of bad judgment."

Yu apparently came across the handgun in the apartment and began handling the weapon. Hansen was lying in a bed asleep when it discharged.

Manning said the weapon belonged to the apartment dweller, who was also asleep at the time and had no knowledge that someone was handling it.

Involuntary manslaughter is a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

Yu was arraigned before Rochester Hills District Court Magistrate Marie Soma, who set a $50,000 personal bond and a July 11 preliminary exam date .

"It's sad how in an instant two promising young lives were changed forever," said Manning. "One life is ended and another now has a criminal charge over him."

Manning said the victim's family had requested a low bond so that Yu would be able to attend Hansen's funeral.

Why wouldnt you just edit/reword your original post?

Because its convenient to see who the nimrods are that don't read threads before immediately commenting.

I'll add to Doc's sentiment, that target sports in royal oak is overpriced, and betweent the owner, employees, and customers (target is on a main road just north of detroit), not a place I'm willing to go or spend my money.

I'll be asking around about this incident. I'm at the beacon hill apartments all the time visiting friends who go to OU.

After the fact, I thought about having seen the owner at Target Sports remove and set his personal-carry pistol on the ledge right besides the rental pistols! It ran through my mind, what if this fool had picked up the owner's pistol in error? It is the single most stupid firearms happening I have witnessed in a sports store!

That article is mostly correct.. Hansen was sleeping while he was shot. :(

I heard from a friend who knows Yu and he said that Yu would *not* be able to handle prison if it comes down to him being convicted of anything. Another unfortunate thing. :(

With the plethora of accidental-deaths attributed to firearms mishandling it is amazing that such occurrences persist. I question, if perhaps, we need to add a segment to the public schools' curricula regarding proper firearms handling. After all, we train children up regarding every other aspect of the Constitution except firearms. That seems rather hypocritical and must certainly contribute to this persistent problem. Where I taught Hunter Safety as an extra curricular class, I wonder the benefit of making it mandatory. Many schools have mandatory boater and swimming safety.

There is going to be a tremendous amount of on-going pain with this situation. More than one life hangs in the balance. Even if the accidental shooter does not go to prison, his life is forever changed.

Exactly what I was thinking. in this day and age we live in, we (Pro-gunners) need all the support we can get. Lets not shoot ourselves in the foot over some miss-worded statement.

I'm not old enough to remember myself, but I think there used to be school-sponsored shooting events/teams back in the day.

Imagine the outcry if such a thing were to happen today! Parents would be outraged... think of the children!
It would be a great educational tool that would most likely save many lifes due to carelessness around guns, but NO, THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!
