Suitable 9mm load for SD?

ArchAngelCD - I find the flash from heavy 44 mag loads using H110 "satisfying", but this is a 9mm thread. You're not saying ...
Actually it's a thread about powders for the 9mm that went the way of flashy powders. I never mentioned the .44 Magnum and wasn't talking about the .44 Magnum. I was talking about powders.

Everything changes in an adrenaline based situation. Guess what? But will matter even less then. Just like recoil. When it all goes south people who have been in those situations report not even feeling the recoil.

I think this is a valid argument, however, all we are saying at this point is that the negative effects go unnoticed, not that they don't exist.

This would be for a M&P Shield 9 (3.1" bbl).

Hornady 124gr XTP
5.4gr Power Pistol
1.100" OAL (passes the plunk test in my gun)
Win SP primer

I've been using Unique on my practice rounds, but after looking around, people seemed to have a few go-to powders for 9mm SD applications, one of which was PP.

I was just curious what the more experienced 9mm loaders here thought of this load for SD use.
There has been some good recommendations regarding the powder to use. I like to use BE-86, but it boils down to what velocity you need to get to. What is the recommended velocity for the XTP's to get consistent expansion?

I too am reloading some sd rounds. I researched a bit and found that federals hst uses be86 low flash powder. Still need to chrono the new loads.
Picture is 40s however i pressed a few 124 hst and 124 speer gold dots. Ran them in 9mm shield, cz p01, g17, sig228. All went bang. All hit the target.
As for reloads for sd well thats another subject.
Only reason i got the gold dots and hst good sales and thought id try something different than the fmjs.

Looks like good ammo...

Just a note on powders used by commercial ammo companies, they may be using something similar to BE86 but rather don't use powders available to us. They but powder in bulk and mix it until they achieve the velocity that are looking for without exceeding pressure limits.

I wouldn't use handloads for SD. The reason has been discussed in many previous threads.

I thought this was generally agreed upon. Factory ammo for self defense and handloads for practice. One box of factory ammo will take care of your self defense needs for many years.

Does every thread about loading SD ammo have to end up in the "don't do it" argument. Every one here knows both sides of that discussion so why can't we stick to the topic? I'm sure I'm not the only one who is tired of hearing about it. Let people do what they feel is right, not what you think is right!!!

For defensive loads, I would use powders with flash suppressant (like BE-86, WSF, etc.) for reduced muzzle flash (especially for shorter barrel pistol) as basketball sized muzzle flash may not be desirable for defensive rounds.

Where do you find 9mm load data for WSF? I know it's a good powder and I picked up 8 pounds for a good price a few years ago. (I did not know it is flash suppressed) I think it's very similar in burn rate to Herco. Last I checked, Hodgdon didn't really have any data for it. Old Winchester load books?

WSF ... I did not know it is flash suppressed
Well, WSF does produce orange/melon sized muzzle flash but I was comparing it to Basketball sized muzzle flash from Power Pistol. BTW, AutoComp has more flash suppressant than WSF and produces minimal muzzle flash like BE-86.

Yes, burn rate is close to Herco and as blue68f100 posted, Hodgdon's site has loads for 9mm 115/124/147 gr bullet weights. - http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/pistol

I use AA #7 with a 124gr xtp for my carry load. Good velocity, great accuracy, and pretty low flash. Plus AA #7 meters very nicely!

I generally rotate my carry ammo fairly often, making sure everything is still running 100%. If I ever had to use one of my carry guns for anything I might land in court for, I haven't seen any justified self defense shooting where the use of handloads were what put the "good guy" in jail or even caused a judgement against him in civil court. So it's a non issue to me.
