South PA, and a bit West of center!
OK folks - time to take toe out of water per this initial thread and see if we can't refine this down now.

I would like to generate a head count please - at least, as close to one as we can. Seems to be some interest from several quarters and so time to plan this properly. Saturday May 28 is the day. Portage the place (range is off route 164 just out of Portage PA) - and I will add much more specific info for directions soon.

caseydog has pretty much fixed up for the range - tho the one problem we do have there is space for vehicles. Seems like 10 vehicles will be about max, tho we reckon it should be possible to get round that if just one or two extras - by parking a little ways off from range. I shall reckon we'll be doing quite well if we get 10 to 12 folks to make it. The access BTW is rough track - bear that in mind!

The range is great - way out in the boonies - max rifle distance is IIRC 400 or even 500. There are no facilities there so - it'll be a case of bring food and drink - could be good if someone throws in a grill - we'll plan food later. Firing point tho is covered so even if less than dry - we can stay under cover.

For now - let's have some posts to show or reiterate interest. See where we are. Ray (caseydog) and I will be shooting regardless!! :p

Hi Dave - hoped you'd be in the fray!!! Well - if Erica can come too that'd be a real bonus - plus of course two folks and just one vehicle so - that eases parking. I am shortly to post some pics and directions - and suggest you print out the maps for later reference.

OK GUYS - directions.

Here is a series of maps - print 'em out.

From #1 to #4 is just an increase in scale - to give more detail. Hopefully these will be pretty much enough on their own. Note - for initial start point with your own maps - check out R219, R22 and relationships with Johnstown PA and Ebensburg PA.

We will put a sign at the entrance to track on R164 and another arrow sign further up. Plus, I'll check with Ray and see if we can expect a useful cell phone signal - should be Ok - and that way we can ''talk you in'' if any prob's.

The approx distance from Portage, driving to East - to range - is in region of three miles. From the tight curve to East, near reservoir, is approx half mile or so when heading West, to range track. Oh and BTW - driving East is a gradual up grade in region of range track.

He reminded me - there is a block built grill thing there already so - chances are we'll bring some charcoal and get a good fire going later in the day - therefore, probably be good if folks throw in some dogs and burgers etc.

Please post or PM if queries thus far. Pic #3 should in the end be probably the best final reference.

Well Chris hit the high points lemme see what I can add here.

The range is 500yds , with target backers at 25, 50 , 100, 200, 300, 400, 500. There are a few long range steel gongs , although they are pretty shot up. There firing line is 7(I think, maybe 8) positions, carpet covered cement bench. There is an extra picnic table for gear stacking. No facilities so pick a tree and make friends :neener: The road is rough in spots but you can get in with a car , just need to be a bit careful, my wife has made it in with our Taurus with no damage.

I told the club hours would be 10am ~ ? If you think you know what time you'll be rolling in, post it.

I'll try to make up 1 or 2 original "active" targets (handgun), I have some ideas , but it will be a surprise. Lemme say if you have a 22 pistol , toss it and some ammo in.

To minimize bringing a carload of do dads , I'll have a spotting scope and figure Chris will bring his , so if you think you need one they'll be available. I'll bring a staplegun for targets , probably need one more for backup (Chris?) I'll also have a mini rifle rest and a couple sand bags.

Ok , about the headcount , were trying to firm up a number , and we'd like to get as close as we can ,don't be afraid to speak up if you can't quite be sure this early ~but~ if it turns out you can't come and don't want to post it here, send Chris or I an e-mail or PM as soon as you're sure so we can plan properly and were not worried about you being lost in the metropolis of Portage :D Also cell service is ok at the range and in Portage, PM or e-mail either Chris or I for a cell # a few days before so if you can't find the turnoff we can talk you in or come and retrieve ya !

As we get closer I'll post some pics of the landmarks and actual milage measurements for the turnoff from 164 so you will know them when ya see em.

Stay tuned
Ray

Chip - thx - hope it'll work out. I reckon we'll make a final roll call about 2 weeks before so as to firm up the numbers once and for all.

Ray - thx bud - I thought cells wouold be Ok - that is always useful.

As Ray says - spotting scopes - no prob .. same for staplers etc ... so you can leave out that sorta stuff to ease the burden (leaves room for more guns!). I expect Ray and I between us will probably come up with exactly several ''reactive'' targets . Oh and also yeah - rifle rests, sandbags - we'll cover that.

I think this will be a very nice session - even if weather not perfect. I am already looking forward to it. :)

Put me down as a firm possibility of a definite maybe :D

I'll be there as long as I'm not off to the newly purchased retreat in WV for some cabin maintenance. I'll keep you posted as we get closer.

anapex,

If Spot77 can get away, maybe we can all ride up in his Durango.....

I'll be there, the good Lord willing. I'll see if I can drag another interested shooter along to pass the time in the truck (and if he shoots my guns, he can help clean 'em).

Darnit !! I missed it, I need to check this forum more often, thats not far from me I dont think =(

Though I dont have much to bring atm, just my carry piece, my ladys and an old H&R single shot 20 gauge that my ladys dad gave her, all my other guns are in MI =( oh how I miss them. Oh well, Ill make it next time.

Perhaps you could drop me an email next time around.

Missed it??? It's not gonna happen for 7 weeks!! :)

If you do want to come let us know and, even if you don't have a huge lot of gear yourself to bring - there will predictably be lots of ''stuff'' for you to see and even try.

OMG Brainfart... LOL I swore where I read MAY it said March ROFL...

Ill do my best to be there =) and maybe by then ill have another toy or 2

Well if Norton can make it, I can probably make it. So far the schedule looks good - just have to keep the wife from booking a tea party or other lame events :neener:

Anapex - If you and Erica are visiting family up there, maybe we could meet somewhere and I'll drive us all to the range to save parking. Or if you guys plan on just making it a day trip for the range I can drive us all up in the Red Elephant (aka red Dodge Durango). Plenty of room for people and gear.

Scott - tea parties are out!!! :)

Be great if you and Paul could make it - plus if you are able to hook up with Dave and Erica - so much the better, as the space for parking is a tad limited.

If the weather can smile on us then I fancy we'll have a very enjoyable day. And even if wet - we have cover - so it'll still be good.

I'll check again much nearer time for who can still make it.

Scott, we'll more then likely be staying with relatives before the shoot. Probably drive up the night before and turn a 4 hour drive to the range in to a 40 minute one :) . I'm sure we can arrange a meeting place too, and take either car. Erica is rather attached to her Pilot. So either way we should have enough room. I may have a TT33 for the shoot too! Just have to make sure I have enough ammo for it.

Very cool - same cal. as the CZ-52 right?

Anyway, it's looking good for me to be able to make it. I guess I need to use the FIFO method with my ammo anyway - some of it has been in the safe for a while now.

Boy, that is a gun that only a mother could love :neener:

Speaking of CZ52.....I keep hoping that FIL with let me have his...... :(

Paul, Just get your C&R and you can easily get one for around $100. I can put mine on the list of things to bring if you want. And I don't think the TT33 is that ugly at all, close to the lines of a 1911 almost. I've definitely seen a lot worse looking guns :p

As I went back and looked at the pictures off that site....I came to the conclusion that maybe it was the finish (or lack of) that maybe makes it seem so ugly. It's got that look like my STG58.....very businesslike.....

As far as buying more guns....I have to be careful not to buy things that FIL has as I know I'll end up with a lot of them eventually. And he has a LOT of firearms......I mean A LOT.....
