Howdy folks. I was talking with my buddy who stopped by the hospital today (our newest shooter was in sad condition today but she should be A-OK by next week at the latest) and the topic of deer hunting came up. We were talking about hunting deer in SoCal. He said next deer season he didn't know if he wanted to hunt the deer with. His Mosin Nagant M44 or his "thurdy thurdy," I forgot to ask what make and model but it's a levergun, but I told him that his 30-30 was plenty. What would you have told him?

Soc Cal Deer hunting...do you bait with starbucks?
Just kidding I'm from the Inland Empire. He should use which ever he shoots better. Both will be effective to harvest our small deer.

Whichever one he prefers. Personally, I'd take the Mosin. The only thing I like more than a turnbolt is a military turnbolt.

Hey there, kungfuhippie, I was born and raised in ND. The deer there are the same size as Alaskan Moose (give or take a few hundred pounds). I've been to starbucks 3 times in my life and once was because I've never seen one before. And I'm only in SoCal because Uncle Sam said I'd be used the best there.

Hi aaryq. My dad was born in ND and I just went hunting there last fall and I had a BLAST, literally. Can't wait to go again.

I second that on a first hand account. AZhunter

PS My cousin took a big buck with a M44. You gotta love thoes things.

"...bait with starbucks..." That's only in Seattle.
"...told him that his 30-30 was plenty..." So's his M44. The ballistics of the 7.62 x 54R and .30-30 are about the same. Felt recoil and muzzle blast is another question. However, which one shoots better and the one he can shoot better is far more important.
"...because Uncle Sam said I'd be used the best there..." You could be some place worse. Hot and dry or cold and wet without the beach bunnies.

No the .308 and 7.62x54r are about the same. the 7.62x39 and the .30-30 are a close match (though ballistically the 7.62x39 wins)

Aaryq,
Just poking fun at myself. Uncle Sam does a good turn once in a while ;) You could be doing a turn in New York or Illinois, New Jersey or Massachusetts (all of which have worse carry laws than Ca.

Sorry, 7.62x54R is a far different beast than the .30-30. The x54 shoots farther and faster. It is a full power rifle round, similar to the .308

The only problem is softpoint availablity. They are out there, but finding them may take a bit of work.

Go to turners in San Bernardino, bring money, they will have soft point-unless it's all sold out.

That's for backing me on that Avenger29

30-30

-Its lighter
-Hunting ammo can be bought anywhere
-less likely to have problems with it shooting to its point of aim
-I've never been impressed with the accuracy of m44s while winchester and marlin 30-30s all shoot good enough for hunting unless they have been damaged in some way.

Large Dog hunting in So. Cal.

Honestly, after living on the central coast of california my entire life i have yet to see a mule deer that doesnt look like a large dog with antlers. The things are tiny in comparison to, lets say, elk you may be able to find in Northern cal. However, i agree they are the best for first time hunters and kids to learn with. I would have told him to go with the "Thudy-Thurdy."

Good Hunting,
P.T.
