I want to get my mother a taser since she is out late at nights on some scary back roads. I know that taser mandates all tasers sold to be activated with a full background check. Here is where the problem comes in. there is a felony on her background from over 20 years ago that would cause the background check to fail. If I registered the taser in my name would that cause a problem that would be unlawful? I called and asked several representatives of taser.com but they all just said, it is not recommended, not it is illegal. I know also that states have rules over people with felonies carrying tasers. I know Georgia has none at the state level but different counties could have rules against this. Can anyone tell me if there would be a major problem with me registering the taser in my name? Also can anyone let me know a website that contains information over county and state rules for carrying a taser with a felony? Thanks! I need this information as soon as possible because I want to get it for her before Christmas! I want her to be protected somehow so I need to know the laws for it though.

You don't make it clear what state you live in.

Also, if using Google didn't provide the information you're seeking then it is unlikely there is one convenient website with info on taser laws.

Sorry I live in Georgia. I know that it's legal for a civilian to use and carry as long as they are not carrying the taser on school grounds. Other than that I don't know when it comes to an individual carrying a taser who has a felony and I couldn't find anything on the situation that may rise if I place the device in my name.

I know a little about this and I hope the specifics can answer your question.

First thing is the Taser Intl. background check and registration process is entirely private. It has no force of law behind it (not in Georgia anyway) and the check is a normal civilian "police check" (as my OPM friends call it) that only shows non-expunged, non-pardoned convictions. This is why Taser said it's "not recommended" instead of "illegal." Taser set up their registration process not due to any law, but as a PR move to reduce the likelihood of bad press from criminals using tasers to commit crimes.

There is not going to be a single website with all the county and city rules, but all such legislation should be available online for free. The catch is you have to look at each county of interest to you one at a time, as each has its own site. If you would like some help locating specific laws but don't want to post your location, send me a PM and I'll see what I can do.
