I'm shopping around for a new double action .45 and like the two of these. Besides both being in a price I can see paying I also like the features. Does anyone have anything negative about the two? I'm really looking for any double action, exposed hammer, decocking lever, Commander size, .45 ACP pistol that's in the same price range. (not in HK USP prices) Any input would be nice.

Don't walk, run from the Ruger P345! I have no experience with the Taurus....Just stay away from that P345, I'd fill you in but then the "children of the corn" will turn up and turn your thread into one giant "outlander, outlander fest!"

Go to Rugerforum.com and search "Click, no bang," that'll end any P345 desire you may be nurturing.....:)

My pick: The Ruger P345.

Mine is the de-cocker only version and has proven both reliable and accurate.

I love my new P345! Denalipark, have you ever shot one? It is the most accurate of all my pistols--not revolvers though. Most criticism of the P345 is related to dry firing it without a magazine, which causes the magazine disconnect to be preened. Just make sure the magazine is in before dry firing, or take the magazine disconnect out of the pistol (easy to do). I highly recommend this pistol!!!!!

Ruger P345. Accurate, and easy to carry. The grip is a little long, but with the right cant to your holster it shouldn't be an issue.
Mine was 100% reliable right out of the box.
It would feed, fire, extract, and feed another round even upside down. Didn't matter what type of bullet, cast, or FMJ, or JHP, it fed them all.
Very accurate. Very soft recoil.
As for the magazine disconnect, clean under the rear sight, and dry fire away.
And if you don't put an empty mag in it won't matter.
The only reason for "was" on my part, I have just been shooting 1911's too long, and just couldn't get the double action first shot accurately.

I guess

I'll be the solo voice stating that my PT945 has always fired when trigger is pressed and is accurate to boot. I got mine back in '94 or so. Carried it CCW for a few years.

Still awaiting the inevitable "Taurus done let me down syndrome", but to date... nada. (I next bought a Colt Defender to carry and did so for a bit until the recoil spring assembly munched out on me around 1500 rounds or so. Lost ALL confidence in that particular piece. YMMV)

I have no experience w/ Ruger's 345. Only what I've read online. Some good reviews, some less than stellar. 'Bout the same as Taurus in that regard, less the CS end of things of course.

Ya pays your money, ya takes your chances.

I just stole at Taurus PT845 last night, I say stole because it was bought though a local radio station's 50% off promo...for an out the door price of $277. That said its a very impressive pistol, nice balance and ergos and well built. I like it better than any Ruger's I've ever handled or shot. Now I only have to shoot it.....

I'd go with the P345. I bought a used one to replace a stolen S&W 9mm. It is my only inexpensive pistol, but it has been 100%, and is also quite accurate.

I've owned them both, shot them both and carried them both. Then I sold the Taurus and kept the Ruger because it is far more accurate, feeds anything, dead reliable and fits my hand good. Ruger is way to go. just my opinion, but I'm stuck with it...

I bought a Taurus PT945 in stainless the first year they were available, and it functioned fine, but we did not get along as mine would lock the slide back 2 or 3 times on every magazine. My thumb and the 945s slide stop just could not co-exist.

I owned a P345 for a few years, most accurate 45 I've shot to date! Mine liked to be well lubed, or it would start getting feed issues. Ruger designed it for little old ladies, as the recoil spring is very light, and SA trigger mode will fit most Women and Kids. The reach in SA was too short for me, and traded it off. It is also the lightest kicking 45 I've shot to date. The super light recoil spring, with heavy damper spring system, really eats recoil......And still allows for easy slide racking;)

No experiance with any Tauruses, so I'll be of no help to ya on that.

Although it was a long time ago (1995), a PT945 I had was so egregiously bad that I got rid of it, and it is unlikely that I will ever buy another Taurus. I would give the Ruger a shot (pun intended).

Do not own a 345 or a Taurus 945, but I do come from where there are Ruger 345 and Taurus 945 owners.

I also own a Ruger P97DC in .45 ACP. Very nice gun. It's ancestor to the 345.

Either gun will serve one well. Both have proven to be reliable and durable. Otherwise the owners would not have them as many as there are.

Even Mas Ayoob tested the Ruger and found it just fine.
So this is about which fits you and your needs and does that best. If I did not have the Ruger P97 I would without hesitation buy a Ruger 345.

As for the Taurus 945:

In my avatar are the sites for both Ruger and Taurus. Click on them and you'll get there. Check out what the actual owners have to say about them at those sites. Research is like that.

I do own quite a few Ruger and Taurus products. Like and Ruger or Taurus owner I would not bet my life on them if they did not work. If one follows commons sense, inspects the gun well prior to buying it, has common knowledge about those guns, thinks things through rationally, then that person cannot go wrong.

The Ruger P345 is a great gun! Extremely reliable, thin, not too heavy, easy to shoot and more accurate than many expensive custom 1911s. I own an M&P .45 and still pine for the P345 I didn't buy. The Taurus? Don't know. But it looks larger than the Ruger. If possible, try them both at a rental range and see for yourself.

If you don't own a Ruger 345 or actually own a Taurus 945, then you cannot make a substansive claim with out actual use of said item.
