First I'm sorry about my rant.

I recently purchased a Taurus PT1911 (NEW). So today I field stripped it so that I could clean it. After cleaning it I reassembled it and slid the slide a few times to check that it was functioning properly. Well on the fourth try I couldn't get it to rack again so I stopped. I called Taurus Customer Service and explained to the guy what had happened his response was "Take it to a local gunsmith to see if he can fix it, so that you don't have to wait 2-5 weeks for us to do it." Now I don't know about anybody else, but when I buy a NEW gun or anything for that matter that has a warranty why the Heck should I have to pay somebody else to fix the problem when it is covered by the manufacturer? I will admit this is only the second time that I have had to deal with a firearms manufacturer due to a problem with a gun. My first time was when I had my Kel-Tec P11, I had broken the assembly pin. I called Kel-Tec told them what was wrong the guy asked me for my address and said I should have it in 1-2 weeks. 3days later it was in my mailbox. So am I wrong to expect the same if not better service from a company that cost me more money? I don't think so.

I just needed to rant. Thanks for reading.

I have a Rossi (Taurus owns Rossi if I understand correctly). Crappy pistol and crappy service. .357snubbie, it broke the first time after 1 day new out of the box and about 60 rounds. I called them and they told me to send it to them for service. Me send it to THEM on my dime? Well it was that or have a broken pistol. :cuss:

It gets fixed (stop bolt broken) and comes back. Fast forward 6 months and 400 rounds. Same damn thing breaks again. Back to Taurus/Rossi/Braztech again on my dime. Comes back fixed and I buy a different make 357, and intend to sell this Rossi POS. Lent it to my dad to try some gently 38 rounds in it first. The Rossi POS breaks, a third time now get it, after only 6 rounds of 38Special. It's second factory service and something breaks after 6 rounds of 38. Freakin' great.

It is now at Rossi again, the third time, again on my dime. AS SOON AS IT GETS BACK it is going to a local shop to be sold, I don't care if it's only $5, I want it gone.

I hope Taurus does better for you than Rossi did me.

I had a Taurus .357 titanium cylider break, a yoke misaligned on a new in box .17 backup (Sent in three times to fix finally put on a new yolk after 3rd trip back), had a brand new 92 AFS desintigrate (fell apart) as I fired the first magazine through it. Waited 9 months on a screw they no longer make, had one manufactured by a local smith and got rid of it.
3 strikes they are out, never again!

To be honest, that doesn't sound at all unreasonable to me. Everyone (even the pros) botch ressembly on a gun every now and then, especially a new gun. I'd much rather take the piece to a local shop and have them look at it and perhaps charge me five or ten bucks for their time, than send it back to the manufacturer which will undoubtedly cost me more (if not monetarily, most certainly time-wise).

Just my two cents, but I'd give Taurus a break on this one. Stop by your local shop, and have them take a look at it. I'm sure most shops get tons of folks in there with new guns that are having a little bit of an issue getting them back together again.

Guess I am lucky. All 3 of my Taurus .357 Magnums have functioned flawlessly for over 10 years.:neener:

sounds like you assembled it wrong, or did not put enough lubricantion in it. The customer tech you got ahold of probably realized "new gun user with no idea on proper care should have a gunsmith show him how its correctly done".

well, i think i have learned a very valuable lesson about buying inexpensive guns. IF you are going to buy one, buy it from your local gunsmith! try to deal on the price, but don't be afraid to pay a little more for it. if (and you probably will) you have to send it back to the manufacturer for repairs, it is going to cost you in the vicinity of $50.00 MINIMUM for shipping. if you pay $50.00 more for the gun, at your gunsmiths and it breaks. HE can fix it, saving you all the hassel and shipping charges, and he can do it in much less time usually. if i had only known! well, hind sight is always perfect. i just wish i could see even a little bit into the future!

I followed the directions exactly. Yes it had plenty of lube. The Tech guy seemed more interested in not caring I had a problem. Heaven forbid they actually have to do some work. I will admit I am a new 1911 owner, not a new gun owner. I have had several semi autos and NEVER had this problem. My first was a Kel-Tec P11 no problem with it, 2 Hi-Points(give me crap if you want) NEVER a problem, XD9sc never a problem. 1911 problem and I don't know why.

I am going to call around to local gun shops to find a smith in my area I hope. I just don't want to spend more on gas driving to a smith than it would cost me to send Taurus my gun. I do still love my 1911 and when and if I get it fixed I will be happy again.

I haven't dealt with Taurus since the very late 80's--but back then, their customer service was equivalent to what Dillon's is today.

I'd broken my THIRD Beretta 9mm--duty gun, not good. Third time it broke was in the middle of exchanging shots with some determined bad guys who really wanted to get away and go back home to the land of coffee and cocoa beans so that they wouldn't have to be arrested and stand trial in the land of Chevrolet and apple pie.

Beretta's response was basically s--t happens and we're sorry, but it must have been operator error. I yelled at them that the FIRST time one of their (expletive deleted) guns broke, I WAS an OPERATOR in our armed forces. I still have a nice little scar above my right eye, courtesy of Beretta USA.

So when my duty gun failed on me, at the worst time, I called up Taurus in Miami, got ahold of someone in their law enforcement division and explained what had happened. Told them I really liked the style and feel of the Beretta and how did their 92 stack up?

They told me "no questions asked warranty--for life."

That was in 1988. Since selling the Beretta back to the gunstore, who incidentally dropped all Beretta handguns (gun stores do not want to get a reputation of selling guns that get cops hurt or killed. Hurts their business.) and sold me a Taurus 92, I've run a gazillion rounds through it--everything from my own handloads to agency issue +P+ Hydrashoks, with no problems.

About three months after getting the gun, I called taurusup and askedabout some double-action trigger work. I was in the area at the time, and they had me bring it in where one of their gunsmiths did one helluva job on the trigger and springs right there while I watched and waited.

I bought my wife a Taurus 85 about a year or so later, and while we were still in the area. They did a trigger job on it and again, no charge. They called it "warranty work."

It kills me to hear that their service and reputation are on the downslide. I just bought a Judge a few months ago to keep in the airplane as a survival gun. I have zero complaints with it.

Maybe they became unionized?

That would certainly explain the poor quality and lack of service.

SOLD!!! PM me.

Please don't generalize all Union labor like this. Myself, as well as others that are members of Union labor find this a bit offensive, and is as ignorant as the gun control advocates stating that guns kill people, and that they should all be banned. There is corruption in every facet of society in one way or another, and lumping a certain group of people together just because of a few bad examples is wrong.

Correction: $5 OBO :)

As a Taurus owner ,and NOT their defender, I have three that have been working well.

A seemingly all to common problem, my aunts 941 went back for light primer strikes - it was bought used so it could have been fiddled with after the factory ?

In that case the gun was returned within 3 weeks and has worked well since.

It is hard to ignore bad customer service from them and I hear too many complaints about it - a better attitude on their part would sure take away a lot of what people don't like about them. My worst & only bad case with customer service in firearms was with Detonics - I still remember it well !

"Take it to a local gunsmith to see if he can fix it, so that you don't have to wait 2-5 weeks for us to do it."

Boooo!!! Unbelievable. I think Tauruses are generally good (I have several), but that is ridiculous. Plenty good enough of a reason not to buy Tauri.

Shipping it to Taurus means it must be overnighted via FedEx or UPS. Kinkos and the UPS store do not ship firearms, so you must go a shipping hub.

Depending on how well you pack it, shipping can be $30-$60. Driving to my local UPS hub would cost me about $5 in gas.

You can also have an FFL ship it for you via USPS. So that's $20+ dollars for a transfer, plus about $10 for Priority Mail postage plus insurance.

Sounds like paying a gunsmith $20 to unlock your pistol doesn't seem so bad. If the Taurus 1911 instructions are like the instructions for my 24/7 Pro, they're lousy. It wouldn't surprise me if you followed the instructions and still goofed it.

I think many companies offer warrenties while hoping you decide that in the end it will cost you the same amount of money for shipping as it will cost to pay a local gunsmith to fix it.

I had the same problem in my RIA. First it was a broken barrel link, then it was that the new barrel link was too tight and binding. Just needed to be taken out and sanded a little bit thinner.

1911's are a little bit more tricky to reassemble than most semi auto's, i've found. Once you get it down though, it's a breeze. I think the problem you're having is most likely due to the barrel link during reassembly.

I own two 1911's. A Taurus, and a RIA. Both have had a couple thousand rounds put through them flawlessly, and the Taurus 1911 is my carry.

I didn't use the Taurus instructions because they ARE lousy. I used instructions from taurusarmed.net

Yes they are a bit tricky but it isn't the first time I've field stripped it and reassembled it.

I went to the gun shop today and had the smith look at it. The problem was the darn ambi safety had jammed. It cost me just over $50 to get it fixed. That included a Wilson oversized safety which I had wanted anyways. So after he fixed it I put 100 rds through it no problems. Took it home and cleaned it reassembled no problems. :)

Guess I'm lucky:rolleyes:. All 3 of the Tauri that I have purchased have functioned flawlessly and are a joy to shoot. I've even carried 2 of 'em as CCW, that's how much confidence I had in them.
