Taurus Judge: What's the Verdict?

I don't own a Judge or a laser sight, but it seems like it would be a perfectly fine combo to me. Knowing where the pattern would center in low light conditions would be a desirable thing.

I've been enjoying a 3"X3" Judge for several months, and have to disagree with those that claim it can't shoot .45 Colt well for a lot of reasons. I find it not much worse than most of the big bore pistols I have. I agree with the recommendation to feed it quality ammo though, but again, I would agree with that for most all guns, long or short.

And like a lot of choices in guns, the opinions from those yet to shoot the gun in question are numerous, but I have a safe full of things that the experts would find lacking in many areas.

Regarding SD or VD, #4 shot leaves something to be desired beyond just a few yards penetration wise, especially through heavier clothing, but absolutely would make a mess of a face, no matter the fallout. I personally don't like birdshot for defense unless that's whats loaded when things go nuts.

I have the luxury of being able to handload .410 3" shells, and my favorite SD/VD is a max load of 34 or so lead BB (.18" or 4.57mm) or even #2 lead shot, 60 pellets (.148" or 3.76mm) that ups the penetration substantially.

But like many in a HD/SD scenario, I'm seriously concerned about the unintended target down the hall or across the street, and would prefer to take my chances with the damage caused by shot that misses rather than a bullet.

But now there is an option available for everybody to buy "off the shelf" upgraded shotshells made especially for the Judge, to include my favorite in BB, not to mention some serious buck loads as well.

Pearl River woman shoots husband after he admits affair from 15 years ago

Connie DavisA Pearl River-area woman shot her husband twice in the back with bird shot Tuesday after he admitted to having an affair 15 years ago, authorities said.

Connie Davis and her husband began arguing about the affair after he came clean about it in the yard of their home at 37447 Earl Bennett Road about 2 p.m., St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman George Bonnett said Thursday.

After her husband's confession, Davis took a revolver chambered for .410-caliber shotgun shells and began shooting at him, Bonnett said. The gun, a model known as "The Judge," was loaded with bird-shot shells, he said.

Davis fired five shots at her husband as he ran away through their yard, Bonnett said. Davis' husband was hit in the upper and lower back by bird shot from two shells, he said.

After running away, Davis found that he didn't have a cell phone, Bonnett said. He used a two-way radio to call into his workplace and tell them that his wife was trying to kill him, he said. His coworkers then relayed the messages to the Sheriff's Office.

Connie Davis had already left when deputies arrived and found her husband sitting in a swing in his front yard, Bonnett said. Her husband was taken to the Louisiana Heart Hospital where he was treated for his injuries, which were not serious, and released, he said.

Deputies stopped Davis a short time later as she was driving on Gause Boulevard and arrested her, Bonnett said. She had a shotgun shell in her pocket and the gun on the seat next to her, he said.

Davis, 53, was booked into the St. Tammany Parish jail in Covington with attempted second-degree murder. She is being held on a $75,000 bond.

"Pretty much any time you point a loaded gun at someone and pull the trigger, it's going to be attempted murder," Bonnett said

The moral of the story is, if you're going to cheat on your wife, keep a Judge loaded with birdshot for self-defense, so she doesn't kill you (or even stop you from running away and calling work).

If she'd had a .357, he'd probably be dead now.

The other moral is, if you're using a Taurus Judge for real self-defense do not load it with brdshot.

What is missing is the range of the shot. If she shot him from more than 10 yards, yeah it aint gonna be a terribly life threatening wound, maybe. Other times one pellet is enough to do it.

I just picked up my bobbed, hammerless-conceal Judge yesterday. It's the first new factory in-the-box gun I've bought in 29 years. I liked the hammerless version, wouldn't buy one otherwise. I like little pocket guns, and this fits in my front pants pocket (with suspenders) and carries comfortable in an inside-the-pants holster. I also liked the 5 shot revolver concept. Taurus quality has gotten better, so I fiqured it's a unique enough gun to make it worth buying one.

I saved my #4s, used some #6s the first time I shot it. It knocked over 10 inch firewood logs at 15 yards. I had some old #6s and #7+!/2s, and we started popping off some at the bats coming out of my barn at dusk. Not so easy, but great practice even with no choke.

I believe the attraction is carry-concealment, not home defense. I'd rather make noise racking a shell into a shotgun in the middle of the night. That's enough to make some run.

The Taurus website has a good Judge commercial. Believe me, it wasn't made to air on any NY television stations...It shows a woman walking to her car in a dark parking garage. She hears noise, sees movement. She reaches in her purse for her keys, and pulls out the judge. She swings to 2 cardboard body silhouettes, with watermellon heads. See what she does to the watermellons! There are also some behind the sceen videos, where they must shoot up 50 watermellons.

I can fit alot of handguns in my pockets, or carry with an inside-the-pants holster, but I liked the idea of a short range pop gun that really did some damage.

I wish that Taurus would have kept the regular versions of the 445 in either 45 ACP or 45 Colt, when they still make the 41 mag versions. This is just like T/C and the Contender in 45 colt/410, it had a real long chamber for the shot shell which made it real inaccurate in 45 and you had to have that goofy straight choke for the shotshells. Heaven help you if you shot a 45 colt with the choke installed.

I really like the screw-on choke that was developed by the crew up at Wild West Guns for the judge, it might make it worthwhile.

^^^^

What he says - if Taurus has the tooling available for The Judge, why not revive their snubby line in .44spl/.45LC. I'd buy one of those in a heatbeat - with TJ I'm on the fence.

Although realistically I'm not sure why. My 1911 conceals easier, is a proven platform with more rounds, guess I'm just a revolver junkie.

The Box O'Truth was fair to the Judge

I don't know if having to cut down 3" shells to fit the 2.5" cylinder was exactly fair, and since that article a lot of work has been done to invent special loadings for the Judge, to include some potent loading for SD or VD from the folks at ParakleseTechnologies LLC.

Can't agree more that birdshot is a poor choice ( but a choice nonetheless) for human predators, but I've found that hand rolled 3" shells with plated lead BB is pretty wicked in terms of pattern at 7 yards, and in terms of penetration too. I also find that my Judge shoots .45 Colt just fine, by the way.

And I also could not agree more that an opinion gained from personal experience carries a significant added interest than those heard around the campfire.

I also can't believe we did not yet hear about the barrel that blew off that Judge a couple of stalls down at the range awhile back.............

Gotta give the folks at Taurus some credit too. Hell, I'm all for a success story about Capitalism these days. Takes my mind off the mess we're in for a moment. And boy is that Judge fun to shoot, which is sorta why I bought it in the first place !

I recently fired a friends Judge with Crimson Trace grips. We were shooting Cor-Bons at 25 yrds. From sandbags, it was no problem shooting 1" groups. At 50 yrds, 2" groups. This is about my limit without a scope due to eyesight. The Judge is capable of good accuracy. I shoot a Python, a Kimber, and various older S&W 's so the trigger felt pretty awful, but I'm probably just spoiled. At 15yrds, not a single buckshot hit a 3'X3' target. I wouldn't trust a buckshot shell past 5 Yrds. At bad breath range, buckshot would probably be deadly. The Judge isn't for me, but does fill a niche as a very close range shotshell gun and as a midrange self defence revolver. YMMV.

I own two Judges. Probably one too many. I think they'd be a poor choice for primary home defense or car defense, and a bad carry-choice for general self-defense. That said, I use one as a outdoor farm-work sidearm, where the most likely use would be on copperheads, rabid skunks or raccoons. I'm in a very rural area, we have coyotes, and I know a guy that got pretty messed-up by a rabid bobcat. We also have black bears, and as yet "unconfirmed" cougars, but I've not seen one, or any tracks.

I keep two #4 bird shotshells in mine for copperheads, and 225gr Winchester Silvertip Hollowpoints in the other three chambers, and in the two speedstrips in my pocket.

My 442 is always in my back pocket when I'm at the home spread too.

So, i think a Judge is a useful multi-purpose tool to have on the hip when doing farm work or puttering around in my local woods and brush. I see little other "practical" use for them. But if anyone wants one for "fun"... I can't argue with that either.

Les

I wouldn't mind too much if someone gave me a "Judge", but I have no interest in buying one.

I own a Judge and really enjoy the gun - it's fun to shoot.

Accurate to the distances that it's made for. :p

It's just another tool that's made for a particular job and does that job. :)

If you don't need or don't like the tool, don't buy one. :neener:

If it had better penetration with the buckshot loads, it would be a winner. They don't penetrate deep enough for me, so I'm not interested.

I have shot 4s and 000 buck most my life on deer/turkey. 000 will go thru a deer broadside. 4s will kill ole Tom at 40yds. Lead kills. From a Judge or an A5 Browning, makes no difference
