Temped to buy a Hi-Point

While I didn't counsel against buying a Hi-Point, there are a couple of good, low-cost alternatives. None of these alternatives will leave you with a gun you WON'T be able to sell, if you ever want to get rid of it.

Unless you can find a used Hi-Point for $30-$50 (very possible), try something else.

The Star mentioned above, is a good choice, and parts are more available for the older model Stars (from a variety of sources) than for the modern Stars! (The newest ones are a bigger problem for things like busted extractors.)

As previously state, the carbines are different -- and you might consider that for a plinker and range use. Fun guns, and reliable. (Some cops are carrying them in the trunks of their patrol cars.)

Realize that you'd NEVER be able to carry that weapon anywhere but at a range. and it open to question whether you'd ever find a holster that would let you have it on your belt, there.

I live in IL, and hell will freeze over before we get CC. I'm just looking for something to shoot that will not cost me a arm and leg.

Well guys I decied I may get a couple of Bersa's. The thunder 22 and 380. I'm looking for a 22 anyway and I could use a small pistol to put in my pocket when I answer the door. If I happen to find a hi-point for $50 I may pick it up...

How commen is the Bersa thunder 22 with 6" barrel?

A Hi-Point would be good for home defense, IMO. Not easily carriable, thanks to the weight. Not something to show off, thanks to its appearance. But because of its reliability and low price, it'd be great to have on hand in an instance of home invasion. You know the gun'll work, and when the police come by and confiscate the gun, you're only out $100-$150 and that's if it's new. Same goes for its use as a glovebox/truck gun, something for which I would not use a Sig or Beretta or HK.

Hi-Point? Buy Mine!

It's NIB, not taken out since the day I bought it, and I'd listen to ANY reasonable offer - but only FTF in Texas, so I know that won't work for the guy who started this thread. Anybody else curious??

Dionysusigma That is good reason to have a Hi-Point. If it get damaged or lost they are easy to replace.

I may get one for this reason

Heck, I like Glocks, but ...

I saw a picture of a fully-engra[v]ed Glock (including frame) a couple of days ago.

I had the sense of having seen something I shouldn't have seen -- but without the illicit enjoyment ususally associated with that sort of experience.

Well guys I plan on going to a gunshop tomorrow morning when I get off work. Don't know if I will buy anything but I will take a look around.

Hi- point guns are tuff as nails and as heavy as a keg of nails, that said...they have a LIFETIME warranty. I dont have one myself but a good friend of mine uses his Hi- Point 9mm for CCW. His is accurate, reliable (so far),and he dont worry about scratching it because it didnt cost a fortune

I think it's funny...

If the Hi-point was a couple hundred dollars more it would probably have more mass appeal. Like that butt-ugly Desert Eagly. Sorry $1000? For that? No thanks. But it's reliable, and if it was $100 I'll bet you would have the poo-poo cult like the hi-points do.

When it comes to handguns I just don't care anymore. I prefer 1911's and that's it. I found "my gun". And yes I own other handguns, but they are just for tinkering. I own some dudded up 1911's, but guess what. In a real situation my first grab would be a rifle. If that's not practical it would be my Springer GI. It's reliable, I can sink 4" groups at 25yds all day. Good enough.

Handguns are a very personal deal. If the gun is functional and accurate, and you aren't carrying concealed, AND you can shoot it well who gives a rip what the next guy thinks. Try it first if you can, buy it if you got the money. If you don't have the money wait and talk to others.

I guess it depends on what you want it for. This sounds like you're after a tinker gun to me. You others should lay off of him, especially if you haven't shot one. To each his own...those who have handled one just answer the man whether or not it's reliable and accurate.

Never fired or even held a Hi-Point, so I won't comment on the pistol. But I have to comment on the logic of this statement:

In any case I'd really recommend spending a hundred or two more and having a gun that you'll want to keep for a lifetime, and feel comfortable carrying with a round in the chamber.
We're talking about a $100 pistol here. Telling someone to spend "another hundred" may not sound like a lot to you, but that's a 100 percent increase -- double the price, in other words.

Telling him to spend another two hundred is a 200 percent increase -- triple the price.

It doesn't compute. Adding on another hundred may make sense when you get up around the $1,000 mark -- it's "only" a 10 percent premium at that point -- but it doesn't make sense at this price level. Either buy the Hi-Point or don't.

I'll stand by my logic. :) If I didn't have the extra $100 I'd finance it. $100 plus interest divided by 6 or 12 months. I think even someone on minimum wage could swing that. Skip a couple of fast food dinners and eat Top Ramen a couple times a month and you're there.

Well guys I put money down on a S&W 22a. It was used so the price is $206 after tax. Comes with two mags. I was temped to buy the Wather P22, but don't like the mag release.

From looking at a few reviews the 22A like the Wather has interchangable barrels, so I can put a longer one if I want.

Those here who have a 22A what kind of ammo does it like?
