While I didn't counsel against buying a Hi-Point, there are a couple of good, low-cost alternatives. None of these alternatives will leave you with a gun you WON'T be able to sell, if you ever want to get rid of it.
Unless you can find a used Hi-Point for $30-$50 (very possible), try something else.
The Star mentioned above, is a good choice, and parts are more available for the older model Stars (from a variety of sources) than for the modern Stars! (The newest ones are a bigger problem for things like busted extractors.)
As previously state, the carbines are different -- and you might consider that for a plinker and range use. Fun guns, and reliable. (Some cops are carrying them in the trunks of their patrol cars.)
Realize that you'd NEVER be able to carry that weapon anywhere but at a range. and it open to question whether you'd ever find a holster that would let you have it on your belt, there.
