I was looking for an online source for a Culpeper flag (to compare prices with local stores) and ran across the following piece of information. I wasn't familiar with the story and I thought that it might be of interest to other THR members as well.

During the Texas war for Independence from Mexico, an army of Texans took the town of Gonzales from a Mexican army.

Apparently, part of what the Mexicans left when they fled was a cannon said to be the personal property of the aristocratic Mexican general.

The Mexican's sent a message to the Texans requesting the return of their cannon. The Texans responded by raising the banner! "COME AND TAKE IT"

A picture of the banner can be found here.

Gotta love those original Texicans.....they knew how to influence people!

No secret in Texas. The city of Gonzales has a webpage and the canon is prominent in their history. I am surprised that you didn't know this since people from Tn are highly regarded in Tx. After all, that is where Texans came from.

Actually, I am a transplant to TN. Hence the screen name. Still, I'd be surprised if many Tennesseans knew the story (which would be too bad because it is definitely worth knowing!).
