Hey all, so me and my Fiance we're discussing preparedness since we're stuck in the U.S.S.A. for another four years.

We want medic kits (I'm an EMT-B and she's an EMT-I) as well as water in each vehicle.

She also said shes not comfortable only having her SR22P as the only weapon available in her vehicle, she wants a rifle too! :D

So I was thinking since we both agreed that a shotgun was a little too much for her (Shes a tiny girl) and that a .223 carbine is out of our price range for a car gun, why not trick out her 10/22? Shes already very comfortable with the .22lr cartridge and I figured its better than nothing.

Also worth mentioning that weight is a big issue too.

We're thinking.

1. 3+ BX25 mags
2. a decent 4x scope
3. A sling
4. a good weapon light

I don't want to throw a tactical stock on it but I think it'll make a light and sling easier to mount.

So guys, anything I missed? Any suggestions? thanks!

What's wrong with a stock 10/22 with iron sights? BX25 mags are always a good choice and a great way to burn through some ammo! :D

So what is this rifle going to be used for?

Nothing wrong with a stock 10/22 :D

She just does really well with a scope as opposed to irons.

I also advocate a decent weaponlight on every gun that may be used on bad guys.

And slings are nice in case you need both hands but don't want to put your gun down.

The gun will be her "get outta dodge" gun. Just to protect herself if she needs to get outta town to our rural home stead. Do I wish she could carry something bigger? You know it! But she can't, so I'll take her carrying a scary looking 10/22 over nothing! We don't think the next few years will be pretty...

I wasn't tryin to poo-poo on your post, just curious.

If you want to mount a weapon light you might need to add a tactical style stock with some rails like you said.

Also maybe a hip pouch or something similar for the mags and extra ammo.

And if you're looking for other caliber choices a .410 or 28 ga. shotgun might be worth a shot. Not much recoil but still good for self defense or hunting.

No poopoo taken!

I did consider a .410 for a little bit, but me and her can train with .22lr alot more than .410 unfortunately.

You can see alot of improvement in a shooter after a few hours and a bulk pack of .22lr :D

have you looked into a Kel-Tec SU-16 rifle? the one that I shot worked flawlessly and I think they are relatively inexpensive

K-D-D;
Considering the limited range of a .22 rf rifle, perhaps your GF's needs might be met by using a reflex red dot sight like this:
http://www.midwayusa.com/product/19...-dot-1-moa-dot-crosshair-with-4-moa-dot-matte or a higher quality equivalent.
Simple, lightweight and efficient. A large capacity magazine of high quality or a Tri Y mag holder for 3 stock Ruger mags (VERY RELIABLE) and fill the mags with CCI Velocitors & you have as much firepower and ease of use that is reasonable with a .22 rf.

That's very true, didn't think of that. AND you can use a "quiet" round or CB if you're tryin to be a stealthy n junk. Or take a bird without giving away your location.

A .30-.30 would actually be my first choice if we could afford to practice using it :(

I've heard so many different things about the SU-16, I was really considering it but I heard as much Flak as I did Praise for it. Neat little gun though. How does it handle steel case?

It might usurp the 10/22 if I runs steel case like a champ. :scrutiny:

@Velocette

I don't know if I trust a reddot/reflex like a scope.

You do have a point though, .22lr ranges a RDS might be easier to use. I just wouldn't trust it with my Fiance's life (Mine maybe :neener:) unless I shelled out +200$ for one.

I know good rimfire scopes that have served me well for a while know, and they were only $60.

Tapco stocks work very well and are really affordable. You don't have to go as buck-wild as I did with the Surefire M4. Unless you're trying to head-shoot squirrels at 75yds, a good red dot works well. The Vortex Strikefire is excellent and a good value at ~$150. The Primary Arms sights are also very good and cost even less.

This little Maglite XL50 works great and is only $30.

How about looking at single shot rifles such as those by H&R? It would get you a true rifle caliber and since you already have a pistol as backup, the single shot isn't quite as bad. I'm suggesting the single shot based on your cost considerations.

If she's open to a bit more recoil, you could shop for a used 30-30 lever action (my trunk gun of choice). Alternatively, you might find a used ruger mini-14 in your price range.

A 10-22 is better than just the pistol but depending on recoil and price tolerance there may be some other options including some inexpensive bolt action rifles.

If you are set on 22LR...don't overlook SW MP 22...they are very light rifles. A friend has one and you can get the slide fire to work with the MP 22.

I personally like a dedicated 22 upper, since it weighs same as other AR uppers, but for your petite gf...22LR sounds like a good choice.

10/22 are great too as you can configure it in so many ways. Perhaps a side folding stock to make is ultra compact or the take down 10/22.

One thing about a "tacticool" rimfire rifle is that the hole in the end of the barrel is the same size as what it is on a M16. So MOST folks looking at the muzzle end of the gun would have to be asking "what's she got there?". That could well work in her favour.

Beyond that having shot an M16'ish style gun in .223 I can say that thanks to the recoil absorbtion of the semi auto action it didn't have all that much more kick than a kid's .22LR single shot rifle. Mind you I'm not sure you want to stuff that much bucks worth of rifle into the car to seldom see the light of day.

Just be careful, my 10/22, archangel stock, bx25s, scope and rings have cost me about $700 bucks....I should have just bought an M&P sport and been done with it:banghead:

Why not just an M&P 15-22? Controls are the same as an AR, so one day she could graduate to a .223 when feasible.

In a "Let's get out of this town with a quickness" scenario I think a 10/22 with high cap. mags and sporting a decent red dot would serve your girl well enough.

There are better options but you've laid out a decent argument to working with what you've got.

If she is willing to keep shooting someone until she has put a dozen rounds into them then the 22lLR will put 'em down. Probably can be done with less but I think you and she do need to come to grips with this idea.

If she needs to use that rifle she is going to keep putting many, many, rounds into someone until they are not a threat. Five, or six, rounds to the face would be a good way to go.

Train accordingly...

Sorry to be morbid but it's just the facts of working with that caliber.

There are lots of inexpensive .22 rifles, let her pick, if that's what she wants, OK
consider getting an inexpensive bolt gun to go with it, like a MN44 carbine or just look for a good short hunting rifle, you buy one for not all that much, even new. then you have a close in, light weapon, and something for further out.

If this is going to be a gun that lives in the car 90% of the time, I'd hit the used wall of the LGS and find a cheap .22 or 20 gauge. I would not invest the couple hundred or so for a 10/22 and decent optic just to toss it in the trunk and forget about it. I can find older bolt action .22 rifles all day long for right around $100, guns that are of decent quality and accuracy and won't make me cry if some thug jimmies the trunk or smashes the back window and steals it. I'd be more upset about the damage to my car over the loss of a cheap rifle that might never get used for anything other than a dust collector.

A single shot 20 gauge break action cut down to 18" would serve the purpose pretty well. It breaks down pretty small and can fit in a back pack. If I wasn't so attached to mine as a yard gun, I'd hack that barrel down to 18" in a quick second and toss it in the trunk for the same purpose. Most SHTF get out of dodge situations will not likely involve gun play, and since this is in addition to the SR22P she already carries, it shouldn't need to be a Red Dawn rifle.

They are not looking to buy a 10/22.

She already owns one.

The idea is to work with what she already has, with a limited budget to spend on upgrades.

Just picked up a 10/22 TD for my 8 yr. old a few weeks ago and it's a great little package for a grab and go situation. That said, you'd need to replace the barrel band to have any rail space on it and the standard base does not allow use of the BUIS. I ordered a replacement from EGW for that purpose and will determine whether the combo will allow for it. If so, the plan is to use all QD rings on the 1913 rail to teach RDS and scope usage.

Car "guns". Well, sure an AR is a better SD option than a .22lr but the noise level could be defening. If your better half is right handed and driving, can she poke a rifle out her window? How about one-arming it out the passenger window? No long guns in the car for me, except to use at my destination.

As I was heading out with my oldest last Saturday (and since his 10/22 is at the smith's) I pulled my RDS from the AR and grabbed my NEOS for grins. The combo looked horrid, mainly due to the size of the Vortex StrikeFire and the height of the ring but it was incredibly accurate none the less. Vortex makes a micro version for $200 but I'm thinking I might pick up a Bushnell TRS-25 for under $100.

I'm not sure if I'm giving advice or rambling at this point, perhaps I'm still unclear as to definitions so here's what I hope you meant: GF wants an inexpensive, light weight firearm to toss in the car and forget (except on range day) in case things head South. On arrival at a safer location the car gun becomes a primary weapon for HD, SD and hunting.

My suggestion with what you have: keep it all stock, buy the Bushnell TRS and be done.

My preferred suggestion: sell the SR-22, buy a Mk III 22/45 with rail (about $325 - trade-in for the SR), buy the Bushnell TRS, a 4X scope and a 1913 base to allow interchangability. The Mk III has both top and bottom rails for optics and light/laser.
