SD rounds

Hey Fire.,
I only have my first boxes of ammo but right now I am loaded with wadcutters for range time. Then I bought a box of Federal hydroshocks for everyday SD carry.
I will probobly switch to something else later but this is good for now.

Hey all, writing from the good ol' state of washington. Brand new 642...black version...owner. I am going to be using this as a BUG, wondering a couple things. What holsters have you all found to be worth the purchase, and also what ammo is working best for this gun. Haven't even fired it yet. Just got hired and done with academy and looking forward to a fast moving career. Help and responses would be awesome. Thanks.

eaglecop249 - Welcome! And congrats on your academy completion.

Three names in pocket holsters that you'll want to investigate.

Mika
Desantis Nemisis
Safariland

Renegade in Ankle carry.

There's a ton of good info in the Club, and a ton to read...So get with it! :D

Wow, another first-poster in the Club...it seems to be a trend of sorts.

Welcome all new 642-Heads!

F.C.D I stumbled into a case of Speer Gold Dot 135gr GDHP +P and carryi it daily and practice with it weekly. Have since bought another 1,000 and just love it - from accuracy, to bark, to thump... It's good stuff....

Ok, you guys talked me into it. I am buying a 642 next time I am at my favorite gun store. I already ordered my Mika round pocket holster & applied for my CWP.

I do have three questions. I was going to purchase a set of speedstrips and speedloaders. 1) What brand speedloaders should I buy, and 2) who has the best price? 3) I don't reload, so who sells the cheapest range ammo and carry ammo? I was going to use the Speer Gold Dots for carry.

TX1911fan - We'll hold your place for you. Bet you'll be back someday.

electrode1998 - Official :D.

eaglecop249 - Welcome to the 642 Club. "642...black version" that would be the 442? As for holsters that depends. Have you checked with your agency about this? Some will dictate what you can carry and even how and where you will carry. Ammo wise you can't go wrong with Speer GD 135+P short barrel or Buff Bore 158 SP (20C). Once you gain proficiency you should consider Buff Bore 158 +P (20A). "done with academy and looking forward to a fast moving career..." take it slow, hard to control fast moving things.

S.O.D. - Welcome to the Club. It's great to have you with us. The GD 135 +P short barrel will serve you well, Try the Buff Bore 158 SP (20C) as well.

S.O.D. Welcome to the club. I carry Federal 110gr Hydra Shok (nobody carries the Gold Dots in my neck of the woods). I practice with Fiocchi because it's cheap.

642 or 442?

Thanks to all who welcomed me in! Feels good to be surrounded by a good bunch, even if we are connected by the www.

JT - I am assuming it is a 642. The box that it came in, and model when I bought it labeled it as a 642. It is all black, black gun, black grips.....help here!!!!

Eagle,

First, welcome in.

Second, any member posting on the night watch gets an honorary 642 night owl badge.
It's rare for such a new member to be bestowed such an award. Congrats. ;)

Third, if, indeed, your new SW J-frame is a black 642,
then I'd venture to say that you've got a very valuable gun.

If it is a black 642, then it's either:
  1. a rare mutant
  2. something new off the SW assembly line that
none of us have been aware of up til now.
That would be very interesting, to say the least. :scrutiny:

My hypothesis is that it's a 442 that got - somehow - shuffled into a 642 box.
(Reasoning behind that hypothesis can be provided upon request by numerous 642 owners.)

Pics could be helpful in solving this case.

In either case, as I've predicted before,
a black x42 is in my future.

(Maybe with a matching MP 340 ... )

Future

In either case, as I've predicted before,
a black x42 is in my future.

And it shall be known as the M&P 340 in a 442 box. :D You cannot deny the draw, a few extra coins of the realm is all it will take.

Drat. I was hoping for something much more StephenKingesque  devil, evil 642 masquerading as a 442 or a 442 trying to pass itself off in a 642 mans world. 442 Like Me. Pulitzer prize winner.

Or...I bought a 642, fell asleep and woke up a 442. Night of the Living Snubs. :what:

Borrring. ;)

I posted a while back that my wife had become interested in shooting and liked the looks of the 642. :)

We went to the range to day to try one out but they only had the 360 pd. I rented it thinking that it was pretty close to the 642 so we could get an idea about what shooting one was like.

We shot .38 special out of it of course (im not crazy) they had Fiocchi 130 grain FMJ for the range guns and my wife could shoot it pretty well for being brand new to shooting but she didn't like the kick at all. I also was thinking that the kick and shock wave seemed kinda intense for a non +P.

When I got home I looked up the ammo and Fiocchi lists its 130 grain FMJ at 950 fps…… Isn’t that up in the +P range?

Would 3 oz of weight and ammo in the 800-850 fps range make much difference in felt kick?

Diggers - Yes, some more ounces and milder ammo would definitely make a difference. Try 148 grain lead wadcutters in factory ammunition to start with, they are only about 700 fps, some are even less than that. Softball target ammo is what they are. Very easy to shoot out of a snubby.

Diggers

Between the ammo and the 3 ounces there is a big difference.

I suspect just the gun alone (X42) adding almost 25% in weight would feel more comfortable even with the same ammunition. Try some standard .38 spl and go from there. If you find that works, get some Buffalo Bore 20C, standard pressure, low flash, 158gr, that in the 642 will make a nice combo.

Give this a read.

After weight and rounds you can try some different grips too. The Crimson Trace laser 405s are small enough for the purse, but have even better cushioning and felt recoil mitigation properties than the stock grips. If grip length isn't an issue for $17 you could try a Hogue Monogrip which is really comfortable, has full hand grip and spreads the FR throughout more of the grip and hand, minimizing the phenom.

Thanks guys.

I will have to take my wife to a range that has an actual 642 and some mild ammo. If I can find a range that has one that is. Strange that ranges don’t seem to have x42 seeing how popular they are.

This Fiocchi ammo was a little stiff, it even stung my hand a couple of times when I didn’t have a good hold on its tiny little grip. I can’t imagine what shooting .357’s out of that little 360 would be like. That would not be pleasant.

I am actually surprised by how much recoil my wife can deal with and not be phased. She said she didn’t like it but it didn’t stop her from shooting, even after the hammer bit her hand. I would not have guessed that would be the outcome. Not bad for only shooting a couple of times. :)

Thanks again,

glockman

I think I will do the same for my 100th post. It only seems right.
