Back by popular demand: a special use for a Mika holster
I posted this last night, but then retracted it due to a couple of small points that - from my overly tired perspective - seemed to convey to much about my security set up given the weird stuff happening in my neighborhood, and it concerned me. (In retrospect, it wasn't worth losing sleep over. "Paranoia strikes deep. Into your hearts it will creep." Buffalo Springfield)
So here it is again, slightly edited.
__________
Well, I like the square Mika.
But I use my Mika waaaay differently than most.
Been waiting for a good time to tell this story. This seems good as any.
If you dig back in the club archives, you'll find posts about my purchase of a square Mika pocket holster, my complements of its quality and the cordial interaction with Robert, my appreciation of the fact that he inscribes the buyer's name in it, etc.
But you'll also find that for me, pocket carry didn't work.
Yes, I understand that a 642 is mainly designed as a pocket carry piece. I respect that. For many, that's the selling point, and the way they carry it. Cool. But for various reasons that I need not revisit here (check those archives), it didn't work out.
Again, to be clear, the problem
wasn't the Mika holster. If I was going to pocket carry, the Mika would work
great.
No, it wasn't the holster, it was the concept of pocket carry. It just doesn't work for me.
So, for a while, I thought, "Gee, I've got another holster I can't use,
but don't want to sell it cause it's got my name in it." Didn't seem right.
So, weeks rolled by. Then, I discovered a perfect use for it.
At night, my 642 lives very close at hand, in the space between my mattress and the headboard.
Now, admittedly, my bed is not like most. I sleep on a high-quality air mattress, purchased almost 20 years ago, that looks exactly like any good quality mattress but feels more comfortable IMO. One of the cool things about it is, one can adjust the inflation level (thus, firmness) with the touch of a button. It's still good as new. Best sleeping product I ever bought. I need no box spring for it. (I like its "firm" support.) So, the mattress sits on the floor of a loft space, and the "headboard" is actually the wall at the head of the bed.
For a while, I tucked the 642 into the space between the wall and mattress. But during the night, it inevitably fell over, usually onto the barrel with the grip up, but sometimes the other way, so that the grip was not quick to find when half-awake, just awakened by a bump in the night.
One night I had an idea: slide the square Mika holster into that space, and put the 642 into it. The square bottom of the holster sits firmly on the loft floor (like in a square pocket), so that the 642 sits upright, grip always facing up, protruding just above the mattress. Several times a night, as I roll over, I put my hand on that grip. It's always there. Somehow, that makes me feel more secure, and I fall back asleep.
So, for me, for this unusual use, I like the square holster. It sits upright all night. The round bottom would probably fall over.
Now, Mr. Mika, there's an unusual testimonial for you.
