Speaking for myself, I've found it funny that
when I reach one those "milestone" numbers
(for me, those were 100, 1000 & 5000 ...)
it takes me a while to want to post again.

I just want a little period to sit back and think,
"Da'um! I sure spend a lot of time on this forum!" :scrutiny: :uhoh:

:D

Mika Square Cut or Round Cut?

My first instinct is to buy the round cut as it seems to be the preference of many of those who post here. When I check my closet for pants pocket shapes, most of my pockets have square bottoms (other than my jeans which have rounded bottoms). I can imagine the round cut holster would be best in my jean pockets, but what about the others. Will the round cut holster still hold the gun in the proper position for drawing from my square pockets? Any experiences will be appreciated. Anyone have both and try them both from a variety of pants?

Robert Mika recommends getting the round cut if you are buying just one as it works well in both types of pockets. But, if you are not sure, you might want to pick up both since they are not very expensive. I purchased the round cut to use in both pocket types. The holster will not shift much due to the sticky material sewn to the outside.

An essay about a different way to use a Mika holster

{Removed after copying to storage file.

Reason?

Hmm. It described a few more details about security
than I'm comfortable archiving on a public forum. :uhoh:

It's that element of surprise ... know what I mean?

(It's amazing what hackers can accomplish with online information. :scrutiny:)

Night owls already read it, anyway.

Regular posters that missed it
(you know who you are):
PM; I'll send you a copy if you're curious ...

... ;) ...

Otherwise, if the Buddhists are right,
it don't matter, 'cause it's all ephemeral anyway.

And if the computer scientists are right,
it's all just electrons masquerading as 0s and 1s.

And we all know that
- if Heisenberg was right -
electrons can't be trusted.

Speed Loader For 642

Any suggestions on what to use to quickly reload the 642? A buddy of mine suggested a speed loader the is supposed to be small enough to stay in the gun, I never heard of it. Suggestions would be appreciated.

You are starting to feak me out. :scrutiny: Should I be afraid? Very afraid? :uhoh:

<significant laughter>

I was fresh out of tin foil when I wrote that.

And yeah, I guess I'm a little ... gun shy (so to speak) these days.

One of my neighbors was tackled and detained by police just outside a week or so ago in what he claims was an unprovoked incident. (Details of what happened are still unclear; lawyers are involved, and an investigation is underway. It's got us all a little on edge.)

I've just learned (in the last couple of days) that there's
evidence of significant drug activity in the 'hood ... :scrutiny:

We've had people living in trailers on the street, accompanied by violence
like the windows of said trailers being broken out during street fights ...

At least two businesses in the neighborhood have been burglarized recently.

I know folks who participate in gun forums like this who posted
no more details than I have in posts, and had someone contact them saying,
"Hey, I know who you are on line".

So, yeah, I'm a little edgy. :scrutiny:

But no worry; I just found an extra roll of aluminum foil!

:D

Will edit my omitted holster story soon and repost ...
... wrapped in extra-strength foil, of course ... :uhoh:

Right now, though, I've been at work all night,
so it's time for bed.

No worries here: a 642 will be near-at-hand in the Mika ... ;)

Speed strips. Less bulky to carry in pocket. And, I think they are more dependable than speed loaders in the sense that speed loaders can be fussy about how you orient them to the cylinder - at least that has been my experience with'em.

Thanks for your complement, and to several for PM's asking for the essay.

I'm feeling less paranoid :uhoh:  now after sleep. (Those 15 hour days at work are starting to wear on me with all going on in my work neighborhood.)

I'm just getting to work again. (Gee, feels like I was just here.) A little later today, I'll edit out a couple of aspects I had minor, niggling concerns about, and repost it. It is an interesting use of a Mika holster.

Yep Bianchi Speed strips, and I load four, not five. Two and Two at each end of the strip. Found that having the fifth one slows reloading. Pull your way through the empty, under stress you probably won't even notice.

speedloader suggestions

Hey Richie,
I have both the speed strips and one traditional speedloader. The speedloader is the HKS model 36 I think. I posted it earlier about 2 or 3 pages ago. I am practicing with both to get better. The strips concel easier but I find the loader works quicker for me right now.

"That's all I have to say about that."

bhk - I ordered my Mika Round-Cut on August 10th and received it Sept 14th.

Robert emailed me same day as order and said about 5 weeks.

In the meantime the Desantis Nemesis is usually available locally (got mine from Cabellas). I actually prefer the Nemesis in some pockets.

I also have a little, tan, thin, squishy Uncle Mike's Sidekick Size 3 that works perfect in Levi 501's once I cut off the velcro thingy!

Never can have enough holster options as far as I'm concerned.

Back by popular demand: a special use for a Mika holster

I posted this last night, but then retracted it due to a couple of small points that - from my overly tired perspective - seemed to convey to much about my security set up given the weird stuff happening in my neighborhood, and it concerned me. (In retrospect, it wasn't worth losing sleep over. "Paranoia strikes deep. Into your hearts it will creep." Buffalo Springfield)

So here it is again, slightly edited.
__________

Well, I like the square Mika.

But I use my Mika waaaay differently than most.

Been waiting for a good time to tell this story. This seems good as any.

If you dig back in the club archives, you'll find posts about my purchase of a square Mika pocket holster, my complements of its quality and the cordial interaction with Robert, my appreciation of the fact that he inscribes the buyer's name in it, etc.

But you'll also find that for me, pocket carry didn't work.

Yes, I understand that a 642 is mainly designed as a pocket carry piece. I respect that. For many, that's the selling point, and the way they carry it. Cool. But for various reasons that I need not revisit here (check those archives), it didn't work out.

Again, to be clear, the problem wasn't the Mika holster. If I was going to pocket carry, the Mika would work great.

No, it wasn't the holster, it was the concept of pocket carry. It just doesn't work for me.

So, for a while, I thought, "Gee, I've got another holster I can't use,
but don't want to sell it cause it's got my name in it." Didn't seem right.

So, weeks rolled by. Then, I discovered a perfect use for it.

At night, my 642 lives very close at hand, in the space between my mattress and the headboard.

Now, admittedly, my bed is not like most. I sleep on a high-quality air mattress, purchased almost 20 years ago, that looks exactly like any good quality mattress but feels more comfortable IMO. One of the cool things about it is, one can adjust the inflation level (thus, firmness) with the touch of a button. It's still good as new. Best sleeping product I ever bought. I need no box spring for it. (I like its "firm" support.) So, the mattress sits on the floor of a loft space, and the "headboard" is actually the wall at the head of the bed.

For a while, I tucked the 642 into the space between the wall and mattress. But during the night, it inevitably fell over, usually onto the barrel with the grip up, but sometimes the other way, so that the grip was not quick to find when half-awake, just awakened by a bump in the night. :uhoh:

One night I had an idea: slide the square Mika holster into that space, and put the 642 into it. The square bottom of the holster sits firmly on the loft floor (like in a square pocket), so that the 642 sits upright, grip always facing up, protruding just above the mattress. Several times a night, as I roll over, I put my hand on that grip. It's always there. Somehow, that makes me feel more secure, and I fall back asleep.

So, for me, for this unusual use, I like the square holster. It sits upright all night. The round bottom would probably fall over.

Now, Mr. Mika, there's an unusual testimonial for you. ;)
