1911 cuz it's the original
HK45 for quality and reliability
XDs for the small size
Sig P227
Ruger P90 cuz who doesn't love a reliable beater

Others will have totally different opinions.
 
Well, 1911 since it was the original .45 ACP.
S&W 625 (who doesn't love a revolver that shoots pistol cartridges)

The best -- as in the very finest, most well-built -- five, without regard to price, nostalgia, name recognition, and so forth? That list most definitely does not include any mass-production firearm. Sorry, HK.

The 1911 for sure... It's the greatest combat pistol ever made!
All the rest are subjective IMO.

My choices would have been a little different if we weren't in the autoloaders forum and I could have chose revolvers like the US M1917.

Phaedrus/69... your giving five examples of the same gun the hk usp45/hk45 series.
 
1. Colt 1911 - started the line
2. Colt 1911A1 - improved a few negative features of the 1911
3. S&W & Colt Model 1917 Revolvers - wartime expedients
4. S&W Model 25-2 - match target gun and with 4" barrel would have made a dang good duty gun
5. Colt Gold Cup - still the standard of excellent accuracy from a production gun

In no particular order but all these guns are proven performers and have the track records on the street and battlefield to back it up.
 
Were I to make a list I'd go with:

1911 (Pick your favorite maker)
Sig 220
Glock 21
CZ 97 (or possibly Ruger P90)
S&W 4506

Were I to have to go to a gunfight and needed to grab one of these, I'd be grabbing my G21 first.

Though I EDC a 1911 most days, easier to conceal.
 
My DW Valor, SW1911 and Gen4 G21 are so much better than my P220 Sig was, it's the only Sig that I owned that I just never liked, traded it off.
 
I don't really know enough about the cartridge and the platforms which have used it to name 5 all-time winners, but I do know these ones:

1.) Colt 1911 and derivatives
2.) Sig Sauer P220

Based on my experience with my outstanding Beretta PX4 .40, I'm sure the .45 is great too, but I don't know that for sure and at any rate it hasn't been around long enough to be an all-time contender.

My new Glock 41(May very well be the best)
S&W N frame .45 acp any flavor

Can't comment on the preference of pistols I never owned, but the best five 45Auto pistols I currently own are as follows;
SpringField 1911-A1 SS
CZ97B Blued
Smith & Wesson 4506-1 SS
Sig Sauer P220R
FN FNP-45 FDE
