We'll never really know the answer to this question. It's not impossible to do a scientific study on it, but that won't happen until we have a large enough group of volunteers that agree to getting shot under varying circumstances.

I don't suspect that'll ever happen, nor would I want it to.

If I were to turn off my moral compass I guess we could use death row inmates for such tests in something like The Running Man. Let about 200 guys run the course "clean" and see what the results are. After that start offering up various drugs to the inmates. Caffiene, PCP, Meth, cocaine, etc. I'd suspect incapacitation times would vary depending on what chemicals are in the target's system, but we'll never really know, because as much as we'd like to know, we as a people would never do such a thing.

Well, at least I hope so!

In the end, caliber is probably about the least important matter.

While I'm greatly tempted to get into the miami debate, especially the part about a silvertip that stopped short of the heart as having sufficient penetration, I will try to resist :D I do believe AYoob may be paraphrasing HWFE though that says "Any review of law enforcement shootings will reveal that the great majority of shots fired by officers do not hit any subjects at all. It should be obvious that the relatively few shots that do hit a subject are not somehow more dangerous to bystanders than shots that miss the subject entirely." Not that it matters anything, overpenetration is not a problem with 10mm.

After a good deal of reading on these topics, I've come to a few conclusions. Handguns suck, they just can't create the wounds that long guns can and the odds of you stopping an attacker quickly go down beacuse of it. Modern 9mm and up jhp design allows for sufficient penetration and expension from these calibers. Some people that are shot just don't have the common decency to realize they've been shot and stop attacking. If that happens you'll be waiting around for whatever damage you did to their body to force them to stop. Sometimes that even means a guy keeps attacking for a bit with a 12ga hole in his chest. When it comes down to a handgun, your ability to place the bullet in a vital area of the body is going to be far more important than an extra .10-.15" expansion.
