"The fallacy of 'Gun Free Zones'
by Reid K Smith on January 8, 2013

A good friend of mine is a school social worker. She knows I think ‘gun free’ zones are a fallacy, but she wasn’t quite convinced. She wasn’t anti-gun, but she wouldn’t have felt comfortable with them in a school. A few years ago, she was interning at a school and sent me an interesting message, which I’ve paraphrased below:

Someone called in a threat at my school today – they said they were on their way to the school with a gun to kill everyone. The staff told us that they would lock the doors. My first thought was, ‘yeah, I’m sure that a locked door will stop him.’ Then I realized that you’ve been right all along.

My friend understood from that day forward that ‘gun free’ zones mean nothing to someone intent on breaking laws far more serious and with far greater consequences. When she realized criminals have no respect for ‘gun free’ zones, she realized that a door lock wasn’t at the top of her list of preferred countermeasures.

Hmm. Strange how reality so easily punctures the fantasy bubble.

Reminds me of the time I was enrolled at a local college and, on a day when I had no class (yeah, I stole that one from Rodney), I saw news reports about police scouring the campus, hunting for an active shooter.

Official school policy for such events was to shelter in place, behind a locked door, with lights turned off. Perhaps I should mention that these doors, though locked, all had windows in them.

I am glad when I hear about someone who is on the fence or completely anti-gun comes over to "our side" with regards to common sense. Be it gun free zones or more guns=less crime. It is always a pleasure to see. My "man with a gun" experience on campus is rather embarrassing, and this is why.

During my sophomore year, a local in the town threatened to kill a student with a shotgun. Background on the college: small military school with about 600 working M16A2 rifles with about 75% of the campus being qualified marksmen or better with said rifles. The administration's response was "hide in your rooms, close the windows and blinds, lights off, doors locked. And have the local police lock down the campus."

I sure wish you would disclose the name of that school, in the hope that a number of parents of prospective students would choose to send their money and their sons elsewhere....:banghead:

I have done more than my fair share to dissuade future generations from considering that institution of higher learning. Ironically enough not for their stance on how to deal with an active shooter or similar threat. But I welcome any who wish to know more experiences to PM me as I rather not divulge on a public forum.
