The one enduring 38 snubby

Yes, the Colt snubbies definitely have to share the spotlight especially since it is Smith and Wesson it would be sharing it with.

I carried full size autos for a good while. Then I decided I wanted to add a small 38 "for hot days." After carrying the 38, I... I just don't wanna go back. It carries light, shoots well, has a smooth trigger... a 38 snub has a nasty way of infiltrating your stable and eating more than it's share of the hay.

I think an awful lot of guys get their CCW permit and think they're going to carry a full size 1911 all day or whatever is their choice of big gun. They usually learn via experience that they don't NEED that big gun, a smaller gun with defend them just fine and that big gun is just too much hassle. A .38 is a natural carry for many. It does have competition from the subcompact 9 and tiny .380s, though.

I can assure you it's not as "new/shiny" now as it was when that pic was taken; it's been doing duty, either in my pockets, IWB, or in the car, basically 24/7 since I bought it/got my permit.

Here in my home town there was recently a case where a guy was (short story) minding his own business and was jumped by a couple of violent tweakers.

He and his .38 snub won the fight, making the point that lots of LEO's and others with experience make: gunfights usually happen at fistfight range. In a situation like that I'd take a J-frame or something like it any day.

Sorry Doc,

I realized later that I should have included the Colts by name. They are no longer in production but their legacy will live on for ages yet to come. "6 for sure" with the Colt.

Nice picture, savit260. Many nice pictures here. I'm not going to comment on that 60-1 of C&L's - he'll get a big head as I've done it so many times before. ;)

OK - I'm getting a snubby - probably compromise with something like the S&W 60-15. You guys talked me into it. My L-frames are just too big for daily carry. Thanks, High Road.

Not a Colt, not a Ruger, not a Smith, nothing special, but it rides in a pocket a lot. I can hit what I aim at at get-off-me range with no problem.
Good BUG in Mikas pocket rig.

With all the varied Lovelies, the Thread would not be complete without a bow from a Factory Snubalicious - 3rd Model Iver Johnson in .38 S&W -

Snubbies happen to be some of my favorites. Right now, they're eleven different ones in my collection.

9 Colts

2 Cobras
1 3" Courier
3 Detective Specials
2 Lawman Mk IIIs
1 Python

2 Smith & Wessons

1 Model 60
1 Model 642

picked up a Ruger SP101 2.5 inch barrel 7 inch overall. 25 oz. have to say I was impressed. Currently have a S&W 36-1 with 3 inch barrel. tightest lock up ever on a small gun, great trigger, and very old now. before plus P ammo.

A J frame is my every day carry and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. I haven't held a J frame I didn't like or a small Ruger or Colt for that matter. ;)

Ah, another home thread. Nice one here.

I'll check back in when I have more time to read.

(Fighting a fever tonight;
can't sleep; surfing to try to get sleepy,
but this thread ain't helping ...)

Until then, if you click on "wheels" in my sig line,
you can read lots about my snub.

In my revolver conversion, I elected to replace my .45 ACP AMT DAO 'Backups' with a .44 Special AirLite Ti - the enclosed hammer 2.5" S&W 296. Too big for pocket carry, it became an OWB infrequent accompaniment of mine - that was seven years ago. Later that year, I added my first .38 Special - a new 2" 10. It's added weight made it definitely an OWB carry - infrequently.

The 296 became a pocket carry by putting the OEM boots back on - and carrying it in a Robert Mika pocket holster. That combo fit 75% of my front pants pocket - I wanted 100% capability - I bought a 642 - and a smaller Mika holster over three years ago. Before the year was out, it's pocket carry had saved my bacon. It's my 24/7 carry - the 296 is by the bed for home use. I 'carry' when I mow the yard - go for groceries - attend church - literally, all of the time. The Airweight .38 Special snubby permits me to follow 'Rule 1.' - I always have a gun.

The revolvers with internal or shrouded hammers, to my knowledge, are the only handguns that can be reliably fired from the inside of a pocket or purse. An auto might fail to eject or cycle, a hammer could catch fabric during its fall and fail to strike the cartridge primer.

Regarding the original question, I got it right the first time. Thanks to the fine folks on the high road, you led me in the right direction from the beginning. I read thread after thread regarding the ideal ccw, and the 642 or some variant came up each time - even in the autoloader forum!

So when I received my carry permit with the rest of the Obama rush, I began carrying my snub M19, and saved for a 442, which I traded a P22 towards.

Anyway, long story short. I'm a snubby guy all the way. Thanks THR!
