The one enduring 38 snubby

I've had a vintage 1962 model S&W .38 special Air weight for, well, 48 years! Not made for +P rounds, but it still shoots just like new.

Can't resist a snubbie. I would like a light weight M38 or Colt Cobra to go with my M49, 640-1 and Colt DS (1st issue).

Cocked & Locked, is that an original issue M40 or one of the new classic line of S&W's?

Its an original from early 1960's 40-no dash. The grips number match the gun as does the blue two piece original box.

here's the flip side

Thanks, everybody, for posting some of the sexiest snubbie photos around!! (If I could figure out how to re-post a photo I already posted, I'd add my shot of my two J-frame snubbies.)

The home CinC says that the reason I love snubbies so much must be that I ain't....and she always blushes when she says it!!! (even after near 30 years of marriage!)

Here's my personal carry. It's always loaded and ready to go.

Snubbies? I like snubbies . . . large and small.

A shortened barrel, custom 25-2 (.45ACP), A '64 Nickle Model 36, and a blued '71 Model 37 Airweight (my 'always' gun).

Ummm . . . those big ol' .45 holes, and the sight of those Speer "Flying Ashtrays" would probably scare many from a further life of crime and mayhem!

I took a couple pictures to add to the thread.

A 3" Model 36-1. A good book, a bowl of good tobacco, and a classic revolver.

Had to do another snub picture... It's not a dedicated .38, but due to the excessive powder that gets wasted in a full-house .357 load out of a 2" barrel, it usually gets carried with .38's.

It's a Rossi, but I haven't told it yet. It thinks it's a Smith like the rest of the family...

My Favorite

Takes practice but the time is a good investment. If you need something more, you're probably pretty unlucky. There is no perfect handgun for CHL but the snubbies longevity indicates its pretty close.

Or maybe a M85

bull frog . I also have a s&W 36-1 with 3 inch barrel. circa 1976 or 75. Called S&W said not rated for plus P ammo. Haved you ever tried. plus P ammo?

Hate to destroy the gun. Alway use light reloads since i have never carried the gun. Here in the lower 48 almost never wear a coat or jacket. With the 3 inch barrel and 7.5 inch overall length is a bit much in a front pocket. Suspect I will wind up selling, and buy a d model 60, like the extra weight and add a Crimson Trace . Really like that red dot.

A little bit, I guess. Not too much though. I just shoot it with standard pressure loads most of the time.

It's one accurate little gun. Scary accurate.

In 2007, we used this gun in my shoothouse for the NTI. I attached an article that has a couple pictures of it and a brief description of the scenario. Nevermind what the author wrote, this was a 5 shooter, not 6.

Gunwriters.

Anyway, every participant coming through that year used this gun in my house. Well, every participant that found it did, anyway. Their's was not available. We did have a few manage to walk right by it, laying out in the open on the bar.

The marksmanship with that little gun was the best I've seen. Just really, really good hits. Some shot better on my stage with a strange gun than they did on the others using their own. But everyone did well. I put the big Pachmayr's back on it for the event.

If you sell yours, I have a feeling you're going to regret it. But if you do decide to sell it, sell it my way.

Another "never will sell" snubbie

This belonged to our local sheriff for decades as his BUG.

Somehow my dad ended up with it since they were best friends.

It slept in my dad's nightstand for another decade until I mentioned that I was looking for a snub for my wife's nightstand.

Dad offered to give it to her. That's what dad's do.

Instead I offered to trade another .38 snub for it.

Deal!

Awesome thread and pics, everyone.

It's not fancy or classic, but it's a snub nonetheless. One of those quintessential guns I will always have. I'd love to find a Colt some day, and all the beauties I've seen in this post has inspired me to start looking.

Crappy pic of my 36 and a Himalayan Imports Kerambit. Love this gun. I'll never part with it. I've got kinda bitten pretty hard by the snub bug. I think my next gun is going to be a heavy bigger bore:evil:

I love my little detective special, but I would like the front sight serrated. I find that the glare hurts my groups a bit. This one was 50 shots at 15 yards offhand and I think I could do better if the light conditions did not change.

The only snubby I have right now is a (I wish I had my $ back) Taurus 8 shot .22 mag UL. I hate Ultra lites! (now that I've actually owned one) After firing 8 rounds yesterday, I had trouble removing all the brass. Again. This one's going on a trade in asap. Finally had enough.

Hello friends and neighbors // The model 60 is a fine firearm either in .38 or .357

My personal choice these days is the 442 IWB with Hogue extended grips. The extended grips are great for one hand, weak hand and shooting on the move. They (EG) do not however fit into my pocket very well.

The most surprising thing about carrying a snubbie to me is other folks comfort level with the firearm. It is almost as if the snubbie is viewed as defense only and that it is ok.

I think the size helps too. For a time a 6" model 586 .357 was my do all handgun.(minimum for hunting here) It was all I could afford so I had to carry it or nothing. The 6" 586 seems to comes across a little on the aggressive side, at least more than the 1 7/8" 442.
An Example: SWrevolver3.jpg

I have tried several autoloaders but none have proven as reliable as my revolvers.
