The one enduring 38 snubby

I've had a J-frame on my person every day for thirty five years except when I needed to have something smaller. On the rare occaission I'd carry a 1911 but mot much anymore.YMMV.tom.:)

I have to say... In my opinion there is no other gun that quite catches a sense of romance like the snubnose revolver. There's a reason it has endured despite the development of newer, plastic, higher-capacity technology. I for one don't own any autoloaders and can't see doing so in the near future.

My snubs are a S&W 649-1 Bodyguard .38Spl and a Ruger SP101 D.A.O. .357Mag.
I’ve also had a S&W 686-6 Plus 2.5’’ barrel that I’ve sold to take a Colt Government 380 MK IV Series ’80 .380ACP from my father. OK, it is not a snub but it is BEAUTIFUL, ain’t it?
Here you are the pics.

Best regards, 5-SHOTS.

My first handgun was a S&W Model 36 passed down to me by my father in law. It belonged to his father whom (we assume) had it issued to him when he worked for the IRS as an agent...in Vegas...in the 60's:eek:

Great little gun. Near as I can tell, I've been the one to put the most rounds through it. I carry it when I feel sentimental as my father in law is no longer with us. I'd carry it more often, but I'd hate to lose or damage it. We use it as a bedside gun for my wife when I'm out of town:)

So many snubbies. But OK, what's the best defensive non+P ammo for a 38??

I think an awful lot of guys get their CCW permit and think they're going to carry a full size 1911 all day or whatever is their choice of big gun. They usually learn via experience that they don't NEED that big gun, a smaller gun with defend them just fine and that big gun is just too much hassle. A .38 is a natural carry for many. It does have competition from the subcompact 9 and tiny .380s, though.

The problem with a 380 is when it jams you are stuck. If a revolver misfires, you just have to pull the trigger one more time to get a 38 Special +P on it's way.

Reliability trumps the fad of the month (or year).

Check Buffalo Bore for +P and SV......I've got +P for my LCR and SV for my model 36....both 158gr LSWC HP. This is THE meanist stuff out of a short barrel. Best.....

I carry my Taurus M85 SS 3 inch with Crimson Trace LG-385 Lasergrips. Loaded with 135gr Speer Gold Dot 38 Special +P, I don't feel undergunned at all.

Modified 1917 Colt 'New Service' in .45 ACP Lost the ejecter Rod's Knob along the way )

Original unmodified Immediate Post-War S&W 'M&P' .38 Special, but wearing 'Victory' Model 'plain' Walnut Stocks

Target is among the first last year, after 25 years of not shooting...did 6 rounds semi rapid fire one handed, then 6 rounds two handed ( 'circled' ) , 10 yards, double action.

Oddly, the old Snubby seems to like me.

The perfect pocket carry combo...A 642 (no lock) in a Mika pocket holster.:)

very good tread I have mentions several times how I went back to snubs off and on durning the last 30 years in law enforcement. I few years ago I went back to the snub a 642 this time great little weapon. I will admit even now some times I think of trying one of those small 9mm's but I tried to remember everytime I got a small auto I was just not has happy as I was with a .38 snub. Like having my beretta 92 next to the bed and in the truck when we go out of town but nothing carrry like the snub. I really think a lot of people feel this way or the gun makers wouldn't not only still be making them but coming out with new modles.

be safe

here is a thread in the autoloaders. it's about a bunch of experts on why people carry or don't carry one in the pipe! simple solution....carry a revolver!!!!

carry one in all 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 pipes

There is an ebay seller named grandblue_2008 who makes custom grips for j-frames. I just bought a beautiful rosewood set from him for a very reasonable price that included shipping. They arrived all the way from Thailand in about a week. I'm extremely pleased and my Chiefs Special is better than ever.

Funny - I don't carry snubnose .38s, but I've managed to accumulate 3 over the last few years. Cheap to buy (used shooter grade), cheap to feed, fun to shoot, and good for defensive purposes if ever needed. Figure if I stockpile some components I can keep supplied even if times really go bad. I have plenty of mags and even an extra barrel for my favorite carry, but can't keep from worrying that such things not attached to the gun may easily become lost or misplaced.

So many wonderful snub nose revolver in this thread. They are all great. Even though I have more than a few I'm going to post pictures of the one that's probably my favorite, a 1975 vintage Model 36. There is just something about a blue revolver with wood grips...
