Got to a friend's private land I've permission to hunt at 6 AM this morning. At 4:40 PM shot at a doe and missed completely! I mean I followed her track from where she ran and found not a drop of blood.was shooting my trusty Stevens 325A .30-30 I've been shooting for years. The brass front sight has tarnished so bad it's harder to see than it used to be but I surely am not suffering from age related vision problems at 33!? I'm just really disappointed in myself. This is my first time missing completely. To be fair I have not been much of a deer hunter since my teens and this is my first year back since age 20 but I'm not out of practice with target shooting! Only thing I can think of is I was too anxious or it could be this new ammo I was using. I'll admit I've not taken any target shots with it yet. My first box of Hornady Lever Revolution 160 grn .30-30 win

Hello again neighbor to the southeast(ish). I load hornady flex tips for a marlin 336 and they worked great. They do tend to shoot higher than flat pointed 150s or 170s though. The Stevens sights aren’t the world’s best, but they will get the job done. The great thing about that rifle vs a lever action is that you can shoot pointy bullets through it, as long as they fit into the detachable magazine. If you’re going to the range anyway, and if you reload, try some 150gr nosler bt or sierra gamekings. You may find they shoot better.

All of this may be moot if you don’t load your own, and obviously if that’s the case just disregard and find a factory load it shoots reliably.

I’ll go you one better: I missed two shots on the same doe…in my own backyard! It was purely operator error. 75 yards free hand - I guess I just wasn’t steady enough. She didn’t move after the first shot so I took ma other - then they ran off. The deer were on a slight right that made kneeling or prone impossible (lost sight of them) and the terrain back to where they were was open grass.

Those were my first and last shots this season… 🤷🏼‍♂️

I know your pain. There was another who stood still for a minute after I took my shot but I was too busy watching the one I shot at. She stopped for a moment and looked back to her buddy who then bolted to catch up. Season in the NW zone does not end till Jan 1st and either sex Dec 16th. State of NC gives me 6 tags I would like to fill just ONE

I wish! Here in NH, any deer season (rifle) is only 3-4 days long. The whole rifle season ended Dec 2. We can get one “general” tag and there are limited numbers of additional tags available for certain wildlife management areas.

I would guess this to be the issue, much more than a tarnished front sight. You didn't say at what yardage you missed, so the POI compared to basic 150/170 grainers might be enough you could have shot high/low. Did you rest the gun somehow? Sometimes how one rests the forearm can influence POI greatly.

Much better you made a clean miss than a poor hit.

I agree about the clean miss vs a poor hit completely. I had one of those stick rests but the deer was too far to my right to use it. Was afraid that if I pulled the stick out and reposition it would spook em. Probably should have took that risk. Was in a ground blind that's been set up and brushed in back in October. This stuff says it shoots 3 inches high at 100yds and dead on at 200yd. I bet I shot over her shoulder since she was maybe 60 yds away. Oh well I'm back on that same blind as we speak. I found some regular federal flat nose 150 grns in my den so today I'll be using that ammo. I've been shooting it for years I know where it zeros. Just hope they ain't too scared to come back but this is a 3 acre property with some residents near by so they should be used to a lot of pressure. In the near by town the only 3 stores all sell deer corn this whole county is deer hunting HQ.

I've missed a shot on a deer only once in my life, many years back. The deer was pretty close, not more than 25 yards I'd guess, but it was in the last few seconds of legal light, and I just couldn't see the sights as well as I thought I could.

That was back in the days when buying a rifle scope seemed like a big financial stretch to me. Later I put a scope on the rifle and that cured me of missing... :) Once I got the scope sighted in, the Savage 110CL has put the shots right where I wanted them to go, ever since.

I only use iron sights when muzzle-loader hunting now...and even those are high-vis fluorescent green.

This stuff says it shoots 3 inches high at 100yds and dead on at 200yd.

....that would be if the gun was sighted in @ 200 yards. If sighted in "dead on" @ 100 yards, it would probably be shooting about 3" low @ 200.
I bet I shot over her shoulder since she was maybe 60 yds away.
Just my opinion, but @ 60 yards, POI should not have been that drastic as to have missed a whole deer, if the gun had been shooting 150 grainers well. That would be a difference of 8" in elevation if aiming for the center of the chest. I would think there is something else going on. Either the gun does not like the ammo at all, or there are other issues. 200 yards with an open sighted 30-30 is a long shot, unless one is quite proficient. 60 yards should be an fairly easy shot.

Whatever I used for the rest of the season....I would be damn sure I knew the gun was on with it and nothing had happened since the last time I shot it. Even if that meant taking a practice shot on my walk out to the woods.

A few weeks ago, I had a free day, and the weather was very pleasant, so I called up an old friend and invited him to go to the gun range with me, and he happily accepted. He grew up in a family that did not own firearms, but over the years, I and other friends have taken him occasionally to shoot, mostly .22s and shotguns. He has little experience with handguns, but, given the current state of the world, he has been talking about getting a handgun for home defense purposes. I've been telling him that he should get some experience with various types, to determine what he likes and can shoot.

At the range I put up my cardboard backstop about 15 yards ahead of the shooting line, and taped up several of the standard NRA 50-foot rapid fire pistol targets. After going over the basic rules of gun safety with him (something we've done before), I showed him how to load one of the auto pistols I brought, and let him shoot at the a target. Out of five rounds not one hit the paper. The cardboard backing already had lots of bullet holes in it so we couldn't tell where he was hitting. Several more magazines yielded nothing still. I moved the target to about 7 yards....same result. So I handed him a different auto to try...still nothing on the paper. I stood behind him as he shot, looking down the sights of the pistol...they seemed reasonably well aligned. He did not flinch. So I pulled some blue paper shop towels out of the truck, which were larger than the targets, and taped a couple of them behind a target. He shot another magazine, and still didn't put any holes anywhere we could see. I took the gun from him, and shot a couple of nice, neat groups in the black....it wasn't the gun.

So, I picked up the target and moved it very close....5 feet from the muzzle. He shot 5 more rounds, and still didn't hit the target. He turned to me with a look of utter consternation on his face. "Ain't no damn way!!" he said. Eventually, he put a shot down at the very bottom edge of the paper. He was shooting far, far low. I was able to work him up to getting on the paper--at 5 feet--but still he was all over the place. Talk about frustration! He, despite little experience, is a good, naturally talented shot with a shotgun (I've taken him to my old skeet range), or, at least he once was. And he doesn't embarrass himself with a rifle; not great, but at least he can keep the shots on the paper.

We talked through the issue. My friend was naturally near-sighted, and has worn glasses since junior high, until just recently, when he had laser surgery on his eyes. He stopped wearing glasses after the laser surgery, claiming that he sees just fine, but we have determined that, at least for close objects, his eyes have some problems. I suspect he needs reading glasses for pistol shooting.

Wow. That makes no sense to me considering that your state is much less densely populated fewer people should mean fewer hunters, more game, and there for less necessity for heavy regulation. Here we got people hunting over corn piles in there yards OR on government land from September till the end of the year. Now in the western zone of the state your rifle season is only 3 weeks starting the week of Thanksgiving and ending December 16th. After that is the third round of Archery and is bucks only ending Jan 1st. I live in the western region and hunt the "Northwestern region" in a county that is actually south east of where I live because here I can shoot either sex with a rifle through the 16th then it's bucks only but I can still use a rifle. I burned up a week of vacation pay on archery season this year with no luck I gotta make rifle season count

You willingly went hunting without veryfing your load and rifle work well together with Ammo You’ve Never Used before…….

To me that is textbook example of unethical hunting You Owe it to the game your after to make sure it’s as quick and humane as possible! This is how we Lose the right to Hunt these actions🤬🤬🤬 Would Your Friend Appreciate it if You Wounded a Big Buck He had been watching for years only to find out you were to Lazy to sight in for deer season!!!! There is No Excuse to Not Sight in if you don’t have time don’t hunt! That simple

My friend is not much of a hunter. He bought the land to put a house on it. Your right 100% dumb decision. That's why I went back the next day with my usual ammo

Hey speak for yourself man my favorite thing about that rifle is a tie between the weight and the sight picture. Not used to shooting in the shadows of a pop up blind. In the sun shine the brass blade used to practically glow.

You shouldn't notice much difference at close distances but Lever Evolution does shoot higher than just about any other ammo I've used in 30-30. At 100yds it shoots about 4" higher than Win Xp 150 or Federal in my model 94 . It also groups tighter than any other factory ammo.

View attachment 1183810Ok so today went better. Three variables different.More day light, different ammo, and the use of a rest
Congratulations!

Imo you simply missed your first shot. Due more to nervousness and lighting more than ammunition.

Id expect if you fire two shots, one each, with the rounds youve got at 60yds they will be within 3-4" of each other with more vertical dispersion than horizontal.

Misses happen and a clean miss is always preferable to a bad hit......but id also suggest always being ready to follow up any shot you take on game, you can always choose not to fire again.

I thought about a follow up shot on that day. She ran and stopped to look back for the other one who standing there dumbfounded. I was too busy watching the one I shot at to see if she fell to even think about working the bolt again. Nerves got the better of me I think. It was the first time I'd shot at big game in 15 years
