The Taurus PT1911SS is a GLUT!!

I ran 48 rounds through the new Taurus a couple of weeks ago. Today, another 100 at the local indoor range. I've decided that I can't afford the PT1911SS. It's a Glut. All it wants is to chamber another round, yet another, yet another. It's also finicky in that it almost insists that I get the sight picture right so it can hit another bullseye. And all the time it's screaming "Just one more magazine, just another 8 rounds!" And all of this without a single hiccup. By the way, all ammo was Blazer Brass. I've never seen a gun so demanding!

Now I have three decisions to make:

1. Should I trade it for something a lot less expensive to shoot? (By the way, does anyone know of a .22 conversion for this piece of steel?).

2. Should I continue to use Mobile One 15-50 oil on the rails like today? May even switch back and forth with CLP.

3. Is it time to fess up to the wife that I just purchased another pistol that is a precious antique, no longer in production and will only increase in value as time goes by?!!!

Got some heavy decisions to make over the next few days!!!! #3 will be by far the most difficult!!!!

PS......Local gun store next door to the range has a PT1911 in blue....wonder if they'd let me do a "lay away".......

I bought a PT 1911 SS in October - have probably 400-500 through it. The only problem (for about 5 minutes) was when I used a Kimber mag. Fixed that problem by giving it to a buddy.

Love the Taurus 1911!

Don't worry They self destruct at 500 rounds. Then you send them back to factory and wait a year to be fixed. This gives you plenty of time to stock up ammo for the next 500 rounds When it returns. bt doing this you get a new pistol every year at no cost (keeps wife happy such a deal) anf plenty of time to buy 500 rounds of 45 acp.
Ruger is also at present trying this with their LCP with a shorter turn around

Let me see.......500 minus 148 equals: naught, naught and carry your two, five minus three.....yeah, I've got it. I have 352 rounds left in that heavy piece of steel. That's a shame. And here I am worrying about what kind of lube to use to extend its useful life when I should be buying protective clothing in preparation for the self destruction. How dumb could a man be?

Obvious solution: Buy (or make) a sling. Stock up on rocks. It worked for David. Of course, David only took one shot. Who knows what may have happened if there had been 500 giants!

Oh well, I think I'll start taking smart pills..............hmmmmm, tastes surprisingly like rabbit pills to me.....must be working.....getting smarter already.

Come on fella...lets be realistic. My son has one with over 2000 rounds and not a problem one. For the money they are a good deal and like any other manufacturer have problems. I will say that I have never had to use the Taurus warranty but what I read in many forums is 50% good & 50% bad.

Wow! Yours went 500 rounds! Mine went 148 rounds the first time and 214 rounds after they "fixed" it. There wasn't a third time, but, rather, a nice check for the purchase price plus tax from Taurus.

I will say that I have never had to use the Taurus warranty but what I read in many forums is 50% good & 50% bad.

No, the Taurus warranty may be 50/50, but, their CS is in the crapper.

Never had a single FTF or FTE through mine. My ambi saftey broke and I had the slide refinished. Customer service for me was just about normal for a gun manufacturer. It also only took 6 weeks from time of send off to the time I got it back. I love my little Taurus, I just wish I would have got the SS instead of the blue.

Wow are you guys abusing these things? i have one of the first blued pt1911's from when they first came out and its got over 13,000rds through it not a problem. i also have a new stainless with over 5,198 rds through it and not a problem. I own in the area of 46 1911's and the Taurus is one of the better ones i own. Now i wouldnt put it in the class of my Wilsons, or Bears. but i will run it with any Colt, Kimber, even a Dan Wesson.

I'm not going to hold my breathe for apocalypse. For the price I paid for this one, $475 from a friend who bought it new and only had it 2 months, it is the best thing that's happened to me with a pistol. It's my first 1911 style and it got me hooked. As far as accuracy, I'm very surprised. I've always been a decent pistol shot offhand, but nothing to brag about. But shooting this thing offhand, I even impressed myself. I don't have thousands of dollars to spend on fine 1911s but I sure wish I did. But until I am able to afford those high end guns, I'll be more than happy to shoot Taurus 1911s.

I agree wholeheartedly....I love mine in spite of the soothsayers. By the way, do you have no concious??!! You STOLE that gun!!! I gave $650 for mine (SS) and walked out the door with my chest out!

I've even begun to CC mine. Surprisingly, even at my age, how quickly I became accustomed to the extra few ounces over my CW45. Of course, it will be a little more difficult to hide when warm weather arrives......

BTW, do you know of a .22 converstion kit by any chance?

Mine practically begs for more rounds when it goes as well. We must have some of the "GOOD ONE's". The reason I bought mine was how well a friend's homeland defender ran. They're very accurate !

I have at least 3000 round through mine. Thats 2500 past round count so my time bomb should explode soon... I will up my AD&D insurance policy. But seriously the PT-1911 is a great way to get into the 1911 platform (Rock Island also) and as we all now they are like potato chips you can't just have one. It by no means has the finish of my series 70 colt( actually the finish is pretty poor on the blue I have) but the gun eats everything I feed it.

So do I think that taurus compares in any way with my colt or S&W for fit and finish... no but it is the gun that allowed me to get into my favorite firearm platform though.

hmm, I have had mine now for quite a while now. It definately has more than 2K rounds through it. Still as accurate as ever. No problems with the safety. Only time it has malfunctioned was on some GDHPs and some bad ammo (squib). After the first 1k rounds it had no problems with the GDHPs. Guess it needed the typical 1911 break in.

I agree with the advice above, that you should look into relaoding and even perhaps casting.

Regarding a .22 conversion, I had a Ciener 1911 .22LR kit for my PT1911 (blued). It was easy to switch out, and ran well with a variety of bulk .22LR ammo. It produced a shotgun pattern, even at 15yds, so I got rid of it. But it fit and ran great.

There are certainly other conversions available.

I've looked into the conversions, but from what I hear there a couple kits that might work. I haven't heard of anyone using a conversion on a Taurus though. And the conversions are said to be really finnicky on ammo.

And it shore is a purty thang, all cradled in its Galco holster and all that solid stainless steel justa glowing with its black Hogue hardwood grips a trying to look purty also!! Hafta open the safe and take a look every now and then.........kinda like it was our firstborn!!!!!

Everyone have a great year, whether you shoot a "lowly" Taurus or the very "Best", whatever in your mind's eye that is!!!! Just be sure to feed, burp and clean it at least weekly.........if you can't do that, send it to me and I'll babysit it for you.......at no charge, I might add..........even if it isn't a Taurus!!!!!

Keep your powder dry, your targets in plain view and your eye on the front sight!

Wow, I look at the rounds you folks are shooting and I can buy a nice used 4x4 with the money. 1911shooter has shot 18,198 rounds and if he only shoots the Wally world blazer brass at $12.98 a box, that is about $4927.00 in .45 ammo.

I own and use a PT1911 for my sometimes CCW. I bought it because I couldn't afford a Kimber SIS or joe the gunsmith's new model jam-a-matic.
I haven't shot thousands of rounds through it, nor any of the other guns I own. The most I have through one is probably my Single Action Army and that might be close to 800 after several years of ownership and carry.

Nothing has fallen off the taurus, nor has it failed to feed. It has MAYBE 250 rounds through it just stay familure to it. The finish has worn some, but so has the finish on all my guns.

This is not being critical, nor am I cutting on anyone, but the deal with taurus is, it was a good buy for my money. So is a chevy impala over a lexus.

I could not afford to drop $1000.00 plus dollars. But I also am not affraid to carry it for fear of wear and tear or marring the finish on a safe queen.

My friend uses a Browning 28 guage for rabbit hunting. It has been valued at over $3000.00. I use a ww2 era Iver Johnson 16 guage worth $90.00.
The rabbit tastes the same to me.

I'm just saying, enjoy what you can afford, and let the other guy enjoy his.

I hear ya, but it sure seems like PT1911 owners go way out of their way to justify their buy. I guess I can understand being defensive about it, but geez. I do sort of scratch my head in wonderment when I hear someone say something like "the ambi safety broke off and the finish is prematurely worn, but it's a great gun." To each their own. I'm sure there are folks who have nasty things to say about my 1911's, a SIG, a Smith, and a Detonics, but I really couldn't care less.

I never understood the hate people have for Taurus..My personal carry is a M650 and I've fired well over 600 rds. through it without a problem.

I think the hate for Taurus stems from the fact that they are made in Brazil and that you don't have to pay an arm and a leg for the quality. Maybe folks view them as Saturday night specials but I own 2 Taurus firearms and I've never had problems to date.

I know my Grandfather was a strict "buy American" kinda guy, but if you can get the quality for the lesser price import firearm then I'm sold. I am the sole income in my family and I don't have the Kimber money in my wallet.

Great reviews on this pistol, come income tax time I will own my third Taurus product....The PT1911...
