"The Tragic Boating Accident"

Can anyone please enlighten me to the jokes origin?

When people ask other internet forums to "post your list of guns" or something similar the joke is that the ATF may be watching, so we reply that our guns were lost in a tragic boating accident basically denying we own guns in case "the man" is reading :)

Predated THR for sure, I remember seeing it back on the old Firing Line.

I think my tragic story is the "jokes" origin. Not funny if you ask me. Stupid canoe!

Guy #1: So what do you think about that federal handgun ban congress just passed last week?

Guy #2: It sucks and is unfair but won't effect me, cuz I lost my range bag in that tragic boat accident of mine last summer. My range bag had my Glock 17,19, and 26 and all 15 of my magazines as well.

Guy #1: Wow, you never told me about that one. All that stuff must of been horrible to lose! I guess your lucky you never bought any more handguns since last summer now that the ban has passed!!

Guy #2: Yes guy #1 I am lucky, TRAGICALLY LUCKY.......;)

It's only marginally more clever than replying to a thread with "What guns? I don't own any guns."

It's been a "joke" for years, however.

Sadly, we did lose a Sako rifle in a creek in Alaska. There was a damn that was built by the gold miners that was not on the map. We come around the curve and wham a three foot drop!! Never found it, did I mention the creeks in Alaska are cold??

Ha I was wondering why a recent poster had all of his evil black rifles on a boat...

yes, i too often lose things like that in boating accidents.

while many of us are outstanding marksmen, our seamanship, as a group, is hap-hazzardly poor. often times it makes us drop our rifles in the water. they almost always sink, with unpredictable drift tendencies, and most likely disassembling themselves in their plummet, and spreading their parts over vast miles of seabed, much like the titanic.

in fact, we could hire bob ballard (the guy who found the titanic) and tell him exactly where we drop things from time to time, and i garantee you, he couldnt find them (in 4ft of water)

A variation of this originated in ИЗВЕСТИЯ,

"Izvestija" news journal around 1955~56. A lot of German trophy-weapons were around, and were being confiscated. Many just "fell overboard." Right before Hungary revolted. Not a new tale, but an effective one.

My question is for all that post that. Do any of you seriously believe that if push comes toshove that posting that you have lost all your guns will really help you out?

I have seen this so many times and my logic is " if you don't have any guns any longer, why are you continuing to post on gun message boards."

1. The SS 2RCo was a Yacht calling her a boat is just offensive.
2. Somali registry of a vessell in hindsight was a bad idea as they lost all records of the boats existence and therefore completely ruined any chance of an insurance claim.
3. When your Yacht is sunk in a Pirate attack keep something stronger than a Keltec P3AT(the only gun I have since the "accident").
4. Make sure the only witnesses to your boats sinking aren't Somali Pirates who later capture the Maersk Alabama and are Sniped by Navy Seals.

There was a local guy who DID have a boating accident. Duck hunting and he and his buddy dang near died. Lost (IIRC) 3 nice shotguns. A month later (MN WINTER) they ask if I would try to dive for them. RIGHT

I told them I would try in spring/early summer (before weed growth) but they couldn't tell me WHERE they were when the boat tipped. (like within 100YARDS) So I never got wet. 4yrs later he killed himself.

I always mention how I accidentally flushed my Kel-Tec P32 down the toilet at McDonald's. Sigh... how I miss that gun that no longer resides in my pocket every time I CCW...

if you don't have any guns any longer, why are you continuing to post on gun message boards."

For the same reason people talk about dead family pets... because we miss them so :(

I tried to launch my boat into an active volcano. Needless to say, I lost my boat and my entire collection. You see, I was going there to cast some bullets and needed to make sure I had everything I needed....

:neener::rolleyes:

I'm sick. I'm still sick after loosing those firearms. I guess I should have bought a better boat.
