Thinking about a .25?

Ramone,

Having been shot in the back while riding your motor cycle in NYC, how were you able to determine the make of firearm used and the make of ammunition? What years did Remington, or any major ammunition manufacturer produce Round Nose Lead ammunition for the .25ACP?

Just curious.

I was off the bike, walking to my apartment at the time. after the incident, I was able to recover the pistol, his wallet and car keys. Smacking someone repeatedly around the head with a full face motorcycle helmet tends to make them fairly compliant.

the brass was Remington, the recovered slugs appeared to be unjacketed lead. I'm really not sure when it was manufactured, but it seemed to be pretty old.

Ramone,

Thanks for the response. I was indeed just curious and not trying to start anything. My wife read my post and was afraid I might have offended you.

may not be the best concealed carry gun you can buy but its better then a stick. don't believe all those urban legends about its lack of power and penetration. Ive shot gold dots into targets on 3/8 inch plywood and it penetrated that with absolutely no trouble and if it will punch through even 1/4 inch plywood it surely will punch through a human skull. If you really feel your better armed with a ROCK then I will invite you over to my range. You stand 10 feet away with your choice of rock and ill stand there with my little berretta with 6 gold dots loaded in it. Last one standing buys the beer and pizza. don't worry though because your only going to have to come up with enough money for one! Ive hunted with handguns most of my life and own everything from a 22lr to a 500 linebaugh. Bottom line is even the 500 isn't going to stop someone before he can get a shot off unless you hit them in the central nervous system. Even small animals crawl off after being shot with guns like 38 specials and 9mms. If you think your going to see a drastic difference in quickness of kill between a 25acp and a 380 or even a 38 special ive got a bridge to sell you. All of them are underpowered. But then all of them beat the hell out of a stick (or rock) Not all of us can carry a 357 or 45acp every day of the week or even want to be bothered carrying a bigger gun every day. Guns like the 25acp, 32acp and 380 are guns you can stick in your front pocket when you go into the store. No holster and no dressing yourself because of what your carrying. Are they ideal gun fighting weapons? Heck no but I know one guy that wouldn't want to face one down.

Ill will ask what size game youd grab a 380, 9mm or 38 special for? Theres no game animal the size of which I would consider any of those three for that a 25 wouldn't dispatch just as well. There all lame when held to the standard of instantly stopping a grown man. There guns that if you need to use them to defend your life youd best keep pulling the trigger until the fight is out of your opponent. Bottom line is if I walked out the door today KNOWING THAT I WAS GOING TO GET IN A GUN FIGHT the handgun id choose would be in a caliber starting with 4 and would hope to get the first 3 or 4 shots off. Here's another angle: If you were to repurpose the .25 ACP as a hunting cartridge, for what game would it be best?

Repurposing would involve arms to shoot it that are more precise in use than the vest pocket micropistol.

It appears that it would be usable for game taken with .22LR. Bunnies. Tree rats. Grouse, where that is a legal method.

That is not to ask what is the biggest animal you could possibly kill with a .25. Capstick claimed it was possible to kill an elephant with a .22 rifle, but there are several things in his books that raise my eyebrows.

Now then: Compare the size of a rabbit to the size of a felon and you will see the source of some people's hesitancy over the .25 ACP as a defensive cartridge.

Dang Ramone, Glad you're alive to tell your tale!!!

MedWheeler, if you're still around, Ramone's story appears to contradict your assertions that people will stop whatever they're doing after being hit by a .25. On second thought, maybe you're right. He did stop what he was doing... walking with his back turned... only to turn around and thrash his attacker repeatedly about the head with his helmet (another use for a good lid!).

I guess there's only one reasonable explanation for Ramone's ability to fight back: He must have been employed as a security guard.
