Okay, first, this isn't a troll post. Here's my situation.

I'm moving from Texas to California for work reasons, and I've decided that I'm only going to take 2 handguns with me. I currently own 3 weapons:

1) Glock 17
2) XD-45 Tactical
3) Ruger SP-101

First off, the Glock 17 will be with me until the day I die, 1750 rounds, ZERO malfs, and I'm close to surgical with it within 15 yards. It’s almost ALWAYS my go to gun for home defense and road trips. It’s definitely going with me.

Now, the XD-45 has 550 trouble free rounds through it. I can’t shoot it as much because of the higher cost of .45 ACP, but it is gaining ground on the Glock. I’m almost as accurate with it as I am with the Glock.

The Ruger is a great gun. I bought it because I felt the need for a revolver. It has 350 trouble free rounds through it. However, I don’t shoot it as well, I don’t shoot it as often, and it costs a lot to feed. So here’s what I’m looking at.

I have two ultra-reliable semi-s that I shoot quite well, for me anyway. They have twice to three time the capacity of the revolver. I can’t see leaving the gun in Texas with my parents and I can’t really see owning a gun that I don’t shoot.

I’ve only sold a gun once, a POS jam-o-matic Kimber that I made most of the purchase money back on because a stupid pawn shop dealer thought it was a better model than it was.

What advice can yall give me? Thanks in advance.

Remember that any handgun you bring into California will only legally be able to have slightly less then twice the rounds of a revolver (well twice if you have a five shooter)

You will need to leave the standard capacity mags at home and purchase some "safer" reduced capacity mags (10 rounds max) for the peoples republic of California.

^Thanks. Yeah, I've alread got the 10-rounders for the Glock and working on it for the XD.

Still, twice the capacity is twice the capacity. I may not sell. I don't know how much I could get for a lightly used Ruger revolver, anyway.

I do like it, I'm just an auto-guy I think.

Why are you going to bring only 2 guns? If you had 20 or so guns and decided to bring only a few that would be one thing but you only own 3, why not keep them all? You probably won't get near what you paid for the Ruger from a sale but when you decide to replace it in the future, you will have to spend a lot more. I doubt it will take up too much space in your new home, bring it with you.

If you are totally set on selling the Ruger I can't tell you to sell a pistol instead because both are great guns too. (even though you carry the G17 instead of the G19)

You won't get much money from selling the Ruger. And you won't be able to get one again for what you sold it for.

Keep all three :D

Keep em all .. you will regret it later!!

Agreed. Were it me and I HAD to dump one, though, no brainer, I'd dump the Glock.:D

Oh, I've got a Kel Tec P11 with over 10,000 trouble free rounds.:neener: I estimate that. I've had it 11 years and for the first ten anyway, I put about 100 rounds a month through it practicing, rarely missing a month.

Not sure how many have gone through my old M10, but 5 figures for sure and it's tight as a drum. I inhereted it from my Grandpa who traded the Wharton County sheriff out of it back in the mid 60s. It's still accurate enough to win revolver matches, so long as no custom stuff shows up. :D

Wow, what a crock of socialist crud. Best advice, stay in Texas.;)

Unless you sell it privately, don't expect to be offered much more than $150 from a gunshop for the sp101. I saw a couple used ones in the shop last weekend for roughly $300. The only way that you will recoup any of your money is to find someone that just has to have it. I would just hold on to it. Its a great little gun and doesnt take much room to keep.

WOW its only worth $150 at a gun shop, Now if it was a 3" SS 357 SP101 I would be willing to go as high as say $200. No way would I take it to CA when you could just as easily sell to me.:neener:

Keep the all. They don't take up much space. You ought to try moving several hundred rifles, shotguns, and handguns. It's a bit of a pain. You almost have to rent a truck or U Haul trailer just to transport the firearms.

The reason the Ruger doesn't shoot as well as the others is because you haven't mastered the double action trigger. Plus it could be the sight radius, but those facts are based on the shooter not the gun. The reason it's expensive to feed is probably because you only bought .357 magnums not any .38 spl ammo. Those ultra reliable pistols will in time need springs (recoil and magazine) to stay reliable while the little Ruger will be still chugging along. Personally I've never seen the need for high capacity so I can't comment on that.
Why sell the Ruger? It's paid for, it takes up very little space, and it's the most powerful handgun you own. You just have to learn to use it.

You didn't mention about how long your stay is California is supposed to last, but in the unlikely event that I was going there I would keep in mind that the totally anti-gun "Progressive" government they have, might at any moment outlaw those evil rapid-fire pistols and not grandfather what you have. As I look at the legal environment you are about to live under, I would make sure I still had the little Ruger... :scrutiny:

In fact, snap up a few old N frames before you move down here. You will make a handsome profit when you sell them.

I'd sell the XD. Keep the Glock because you shoot it well, keep the Ruger because it conceals well. Wonder what CA's CCW laws are... Worse than they should be, I'm sure.

If you just don't like revolvers then you should probably sell it and buy a bunch of ten round mags for your semi's. Personally I'd keep it as it's a dang fine weapon with no issues.

If it were me I'd buy a bunch of guns that aren't on the list here to bring with you and make a bunch of money as it's perfectly legal to do. Kel-tec p32's come to mind as you can buy them for under $300.00 there and I've seen them go for over $500.00 here.

I'm NOT Going to Sell It

I talked to my dad last night, and he said many of the same things yall did. He also made the point that between a 9mm, a .45, and a 38/357 I have the most popular pistol calibers represented. Also, although I don't shoot it perfectly, I could defend myself with it if the time came. Plus, the double-action trigger is beginning to smooth out as well.

Thanks for the input, all. I do really like this gun, and it has never failed me. Never get rid of a good gun unless you have to, I guess. And I couldn't get anything for it, either.

Glad to see you are keeping all three. The way California is going who knows how long it will be before they outlaw all semi-auto pistols? Also if that really is your target from a 2 inch SP101 I don't want you shooting at me. All shots are in the areas that could likely lead to death of the bad guy. Good shooting.

Thanks. Sometimes you just need people to help you confirm a choice you've already made.

I like my SP-101 too much to sell it, and odds are I'd just end up re-buying one later on anyway.

Welcome to California.
I live in Riverside County. If you're headed down this way or San Diego/Orange Co. areas, I'll be more than happy to take you out shooting!

Keep it. Sure, you could buy another one, but you already have this one & if it works well for you & you don't need the $$, keep it ;)
